Very Good
Blind PirateBlind Pirate
Notes: A juicy IPA. Pirates love citrus fruits almost as much as they love blood. If the phrase “you are what you eat” is true, then pirates are blood oranges. If the phrase “you are what you drink” is true, you’re about to be an incredibly delicious, juicy hop bomb of an IPA. We add bits of real blood orange to every beer, so you know it’s good.

Kkkkak. Kkkkkaaak. No. Maybe I got a sour batch, but this is horrid. It tastes like there could be a decent beer in there somewhere, but its drowned by an overwhelming taste of something funky. I suspect its the weird hops they chose. Seems like I've tasted this wretch before. Save your $10. Thank God I bought a backup sixer of Stone's Fear Movie Lions.

Surprisingly good! I usually don’t like Monday night brewing but this one is refreshing. Great smell that delivers in the taste as well. I would definitely get again.

Can poured into a "be hoppy" IPA glass. 7/5/19 "best by" stamp consumed 4/13/19.

Traditional IPA look, with a brownish-gold body and orange-gold edges, a medium-opaque consistency, and a soapy, off-white head of compact bubbles that wasn't large to begin with but that provided some nice rings of lacing.

Smell is West Coast IPA malty, citrusy, and pine heavy. Grassy, with big grapefruit notes, both the fruit and the peal. Not overly nuanced and honestly a little mild for a IIPA (served too cold?), but what is there is quite good and I'm digging the old school American IPA personality.

Taste picks it up a notch and is consistent with the nose. Very malty with a slight note of sweetness, which is needed because the citrus pith, resiny dankness, and bitter grapefruit is pronounced. There's definitely a nice citrus element, but I'm not sure I could have called the blood orange adjunct, as it's not a dominant player. Grape musk, bready wheat, more pithy grapefruit, herbal hop green. Maybe not ground-breaking, but very good.

Feel is medium-bodied (maybe a touch light for a IIPA, but this isn't a big IIPA at 7.4%), very well carbonated, smooth and silky, and totally un-boozy.

If you're in the mood for a bitter, dank, resiny punch of West Coast malt and grapefruit juice, this is a winner.

A good tart feel on first impact that doesn't disappoint as it goes down. Definitely adding this to my rotation of IPAs and would recommend trying this if you haven't.

L - 2-finger dense yellowish head atop a near-translucent orange body.

S - oranges, caramel, brown sugar.

T - follows the nose. Malt-forward with a lot of orange and caramel. Low bitterness. Moderate-high sweetness. Low booziness.

F - medium body and carb.

O - a tad too sweet, but otherwise this is a solid old-school ipa.

A: Clear copper color, 1 inch off white head from aggressive pour, nice lacing

S: Lots of citrus living up to the blood orange name

T: Sweet malts, balances the citrus hops nicely.

M: Medium

O: Ive had this can for a few months now and I just got around to rating it. I remember an off taste from the others I had but sitting in the beer fridge has done this beer some good.

1/2 Growler

Pours pretty typical looking almond amber, nice fluffy khaki cap, leaving respectable ringed lacing..

Tropical fruit and resiny hop sniff

Quality DIPA, mostly resiny hops, and some malty underbelly to sort of balance things out.....worthy

Poured from the tap into a pint glass at Varner's in Smyrna, GA. The appearance is a murky reddish-orange color with a medium sized white head. The aroma is a full on citrus assault. The taste is hops and citrus.

Just a quick note, the can I purchased is called Blind Pirate Blood Orange IPA and has a ABV of 7.4%. Seems to be a variant between the two Blind Pirate brews listed here, but very tasty none the less.

Appearance: Arrives with a hazy copper color capped by an inch of foam; a few streaks of lace linger

Smell: Slightly herbal with a nice citrus tone

Taste: The slight caramel undertone provides a platform for the hops, which brings citrus, the herbal tone and, after the swallow, some of the bitterness of the blood orange

Mouthfeel: Medium body with moderate carbonation

Overall: Pleasant enough, but I was anticipating a stronger blood orange presence

16 ounce pint - $6.00 at Taco Mac in Woodstock, Georgia.

Appearance: Served up a cloudy, lightly chunky (dem oranges?), dim amber-orange body with a whitish head. Moderate lacing.

Smell: Toasted bread, citrus (though more grapefruit, lemon than blood ornage) and a sweetish coating of caramel.

Taste: Toasted malts, caramel and not particularly sweet. It's got a pop of citrus, though, as with the nose, it's coming across more as grapefruit and lemon from the hops than the blood orange addition. Slightly resiny, grassy. Medium-high bitterness whose bite remains through the finish, though you do get a final hint of that initial caramel.

Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied. Medium carbonation.

Overall: Decent enough.

12 ounce bottle into tulip glass, no bottle dating. Pours fairly hazy/cloudy orange/copper color with a 1-2 finger fairly dense and fluffy light khaki head with great retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings around the glass. Aromas of big blood orange, grapefruit, pineapple, peach, mango, passion fruit, lemon zest, orange peel, pine, caramel, toasted bread, and floral/grassy earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balanced and complexity of citrus/tropical/pine hops, blood orange, and moderate bready malt notes; with great strength. Taste of big blood orange, grapefruit, pineapple, peach, mango, passion fruit, lemon zest, orange peel, pine, caramel, toasted bread, and floral/grassy earthiness. Moderate amount of pine/citrus rind bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of blood orange, grapefruit, pineapple, peach, mango, passion fruit, lemon zest, orange peel, pine, caramel, toasted bread, and floral/grassy earthiness on the finish for a while. Damn nice complexity, robustness, and balance of citrus/tropical/pine hops, blood orange, and moderate bready malt flavors; with a great malt/bitterness balance and zero astringent hop flavors after the finish. Good dryness from bitterness as well. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, moderately sticky/resinous, and lightly creamy/bready balanced mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with zero warming lingering after the finish. Overall this is a damn nice fruited IPA style. All around great complexity, robustness, and balance of citrus/tropical/pine hops, blood orange, and moderate bready malt flavors; and very smooth and easy to drink. A very enjoyable offering.

Decent IPA that I picked up this Fall.

Definitely a strong orange smell with a weird urine overtone, but it doesn't taste like a double IPA at all, more like a regular IPA.

Poured from a 12 ounce bottle into a Teku glass.
A: Nearly opaque orange. Haze of head.
S: Smells like gentle C hop (Columbus) with a whiff of pineapple (Citra) and...creamy garlic (Simcoe)?? (The hop bill actually explained this perfectly. Don't know anything about Comet.
T: I don't know how you get away with calling something 6.5% a Double IPA (unless 6% is your cutoff?), and so - unsurprisingly - it doesn't taste like a DIPA. It's a pleasantly hoppy pale ale (fine, IPA), with lots of aggressive American hops up front and only a subdued-but-sharp citric acid bite to communicate the presence of any fruit. Mid- to endtaste is rather earthy, nicely so, before a less-than-exciting return to form for an aftertaste full of citrusy hops.
M/O: I liked this beer, but it didn't astound. I think the blood orange sneaks up, because my mouth halfway through sure tastes a lot more acidic than it did when I began! Dumped in some sediment from the bottle and got a fuller, seemingly sweeter, body. Curious.

IBU: 55
Malts: 2-Row, Wheat, Munich, Caramel
Hops: Citra, Comet, Simcoe, Columbus
Finished with blood orange juice.

12 oz bottle served in a lager glass.

Appearance: hazy copper body topped by a durable, moderate size, bone-colored head that leaves patterned lacing. Like orange juice, there's variable size particles floating about in the body.

Aroma: As expected, very hoppy with plenty of citrus including orange, but there's also some herbal hop notes here.

Flavor: the hop component has more prominent herbal notes, compared to the citrus notes, than in the aroma. Good balance and a nice interplay of sweet and bitter notes, although bitterness builds across sips.

Feel: medium body with soft, medium+ carbonation. Mild hop bite.

O: readily recommended for hop heads, particularly if you favor citrusy hops.

In brief: A dry and bitter IPA with delicious Blood Orange aroma and flavor. This is a fantastic "fruit IPA" that nails the style. Avoids the trap of being overly sweet. Beautiful color and nice aroma, finish has lingering piney bitterness and orange peel. Very drinkable.

Small head that settles to rim bubbles. Only a few minute spots for lace. Amber color with a light haze.

I initially smell urine. Light hop and a bit musty.

Dry and astringent in the swallow. Highly carbonated with a moderate body. Long aftertaste. No malt base that I can tell.

For a DIPA, it tastes fairly light. You definitely smell the citrus from the blood orange, but I didn't really get much of a blood orange flavor. It's a fairly good DIPA - very drinkable. There was a bit of an ester taste and a bit of funkiness, but in a good way

Despite being only 6.5%, this really does drink like a pretty heavy DIPA. I think this is one of the best offerings I've had out of Georgia.

Pours an orange amber, almost the color of bourbon. Little head or lacing.

Smell is boozy and orange, some nice hop notes as well.

Taste is fantastic. Huge sweet malt, followed by acidic and sweet orange and slightly piney hop flavors. There's a TON of flavor thrown at you, but I think it's really well balanced. Do not expect this to be a clean or light beer.

Feeling is fairly medium to thick, with a medium amount of carb. Definitely coats the mouth with hoppy bitterness.

This is everything I expected from something like the grapefruit sculpin and more. Maybe because it's so fresh, but I think this is a wonderful offering from a local brewery and can contend with many more renowned beer nationwide.

I will revisit this review on a second drinking.

poured from bottle into IPA glass.

The regular Blind Pirate is one of my local go-to DIPAs in Atlanta.

Pours bronze, with a 1-finger off-white head

Immediately pick up on the citrus. Bunch of hops to pick up on too. Malt vaguely shows itself.

Taste is consistent with flavor. Really good job making a good hoppy/malty DIPA, that also has plenty refreshing citrus characteristics.

Medium Bodied, with strong carbonation.

Overall, a really good DIPA. I believe I prefer the NON-blood orange version better, but still very good.

Poured from 12 oz bottle into snifter. No visible bottle date.

A: Reddish orange with one finger head that lasted a good while with moderate lacing. Certainly looks the part of a blood orange IPA.

S: Orange juice and floral hops.

T: Bright citrus with blood oranges coming through nicely. Good balance between hop bill and malt backbone.

M: Medium body with lightly sweet and bitter finish.

O: Unique IPA. This might be my favorite Monday night beer to date.

Extreme maltiness for an IPA. Almost to the point of caramel-like aroma and flavor, which isn't exactly what I want to experience when drinking a presumably clean tasting (D)IPA. The blood orange does come through in acceptable amounts on the palate. Overall, the beer feels a bit muddy for an IPA and lacks refinement.

This puppy is a play on what Blind Pirate + Blood Oranges would taste like. Hop & malt bill is different. Keeping Simcoe & Columbus. Adding Comet & Citra. Smart move. One of the best things MNB has made. Eye Patch & Blind Pirate are English Style IPAs. This is more of a West Coast Style. Super hop forward. Super citrus bomb. Italian blood oranges are being used because they're a smiddddggeee more sweet (still pretty tart). Can't get enough. Mama like.
