Como Te LlamasComo Te Llamas
Notes: Como Te Llamas is an imperial stout aged in tequila barrels. This beer was created as an homage to the classic flavors of the Horchata. Cinnamon, lactose, nutmeg, and brown sugar add depth and a creaminess that pairs well with herbaceous fresh tequila barrels.

2018 Release.

Pours like motor oil, medium viscosity and a small amount of tan head that quickly settles into the beer. Minimal spots of lace.

Lots of sweet, dark fruit in the nose, some grapey red wine notes... very mildly boozy, but mostly sweet fruit. It improves as it warms, with a bold emergence of vanilla. Honestly the nose is just a little off, soured.

Getting some of those cinnamon and spice notes, but they’re struggling to fight through a prevalent tart fruit quality.. not unpleasant, with a surprising amount of roasty coffee serving as the dominant flavors in this beer. Again, a tad off but not ruined.

Smooth, medium carb and a bitter, roasty finish. Stickiness lingers.

500mL bottle picked up at the brewery. Released 12/8/2018. Served in a Monday Night snifter. Enjoyed 1/3/19.

Pours oil black with a generous mocha head. The froth is slow to fade but once it’s gone there’s no retention.

Smells of wet wood, agave, horchata and a little burnt chocolate.

Bittersweet dark chocolate meets tequila soaked wood with a hearty dose of spice in the flavor. Cinnamon, agave, nutmeg, burnt caramel, vanilla, roasty malts, oaky char and a gentle booze burn.

Velvety, medium full feel with mild carbonation. Charred tequila barrel, spiced chocolate cake and vanilla glaze in the finish.

Monday Night puts a fresh spin on the Mexican style stout, going horchata instead of mole. I appreciate their commitment to a theme in choosing tequila barrels but for my tastes it is a tad abrasive. I’d like the opportunity to try the base for Como te Llamas and/or other barrel treatments because it is a tasty brew.

Poured into a snifter. An opaque dark brown color with a medium sized tan head. Nice retention for a BA stout. Spicy aroma with horchata, tequila, vanilla, and cinnamon. On the taste, the tequila was there up front, but it sort of framed the rest of the beer with some agave. I was impressed with the mix of cinnamon and vanilla. The horchata was somewhat muted, giving the beer an overall sweet presence. The feel was big but not overly sweet. Certainly not boozy for a 12.5% beer. All in all, a nice stout.
