Notes: Situational Ethics is our series of decadent imperial stouts aged in different barrels. This one just happens to be our Maple-rum barrel aged variety. We combined fresh ginger, nutmeg, Vietnamese cinnamon, cloves and Tahitian vanilla beans for that classic gingerbread aroma and flavor.

look: Modest khaki head on the pour that mostly recedes. Some light lacing. Very dark brown, nearly opaque, with some cola highlights when held to light.
smell: It does remind of gingerbread. Cloves are most prominent but overpowering. nice complex mix of spices and stout notes.
taste: Aromatic spices take a back seat here. Vanilla and maple sweetness counter the spice. Some espresso in the finish. Very easy drinker for 13.8

500mL bottle acquired at the brewey. Released 12/15/18. Served in a Monday Night snifter. Enjoyed 12/16/18.

Pours oil black with a generous cap of deep khaki froth. The head recedes, leaving a thin collar but really no other retention.

Smells of maple syrup, gingerbread, cinnamon, sugary wet wood and cooked caramel.

The maple rum has a strong presence in the flavor. Boozey syrup, spice-forward gingerbread, cinnamon, vanilla, wet wood and plenty of alcohol. Despite the obvious heat this goes down much easier than a sub-14% abv barrel aged stout has any right to.

Creamy, full feel with restrained carbonation. The finish is slightly warm with impressions of maple rum glazed gingerbread.

As I was stopping by Monday Night’s Garage to pick up this year’s trio of Situational Ethics releases I was recalling that my first trip there was 12 months ago, picking up last winter’s selections. It has been a mighty strong year for them full of outstanding barrel aged brews but the Situational Ethics are right up at the top. This Gingerbread Spiced iteration is arguably the best gingerbread stout that I’ve had. The spiced character pops with the gingerbread and the maple bourbon glaze on top truly elevates the experience.
