Brevis and BrettheadBrevis and Bretthead
Notes: Brevis & Bretthead is a double dry-hopped sour IPA fermented with Brettanomyces and Lactobacillus brevis (get it?). These different strains play off each other with tart, funky notes to complement the bitterness of the Mosaic, Simcoe, Citra, Idaho 7 and El Dorado hops.

“Brevis and Bretthead” -- Monday Night Brewing, Blend No. 1, 2019

No date on bottle. Two bottles, consumed in a tulip glass on 9/18/2019 and 9/30/2019.

Full transparency: I can’t beat review by WickedBeer, which is totally spot-on, but I wanted to write something, too, since this beer was so delicious and deserves some more praise.

Straw colored and opaque. Half-finger white head. Medium lacing.

Passionfruit. Sour. Funk. Grapefruit. Honestly, amazing.

Luckily, follows the nose. Passionfruit. Sour. Funk. Orange rind. Guava. A little yeast. Some hops. Tart, in the best of ways. Did I mention passionfruit?

Pucker up: tart, acidic, citrus. A little dry. Very refreshing. 8% well-hidden.

I immediately went out and picked up a third bottle. In short, this beer is fantastic. If somebody told me that passionfruit flavors had been added, I would have believed them. I bought this expecting something like a yeasty/floral Belgian IPA, but instead this is a delicious fruit-forward sour beer with just the right balance of hops that shouldn’t turn off people who normally despise IPAs. I’d love to see this beer again or to catch it on tap. Don’t miss it.

On tap at Loosa Brews, Tuscaloosa AL.

Pours a straw gold yellow, hazy and without much rising head. Carbonation is looking low based on the appearance.

The nose on this is great, full of bright, zesty citrus and passionfruit aromas, with the Brett funk serving as a compliment. Undertones of hay and subtle, yeasty funk.

Tart, funky flavors, puckering right off the bat. There’s a return of that mustiness from the Brett, but with great assertive flavors of lemon candy and orange zest. Acidic, but not overly so.

A light-bodied, puckering sour IPA with a good level of acidity and a subtle dryness that leaves that tannic feel in your mouth.
