Appearance: Deep burnished red-brown. Tiny head that drops to nothing almost instantly. Minimal carbonation on the pour. Rich purples and darker reds when held to direct light. Sits pretty still in the glass.

Smell: Cherry is abundant. Tart dark cherry skin and juice with a bit of cherry flesh as well. Slight lactic tart edge. Mild citric bite as well. Malt base is mildly sweet with a solid bready and caramelized malt base. A touch of toffee and honeyed biscuit. Hops are very lightly herbal and earthy. Slight dampness with a touch of oak. Some vanilla and caramel as well. Yeast is a bit fluffy with very slight fruity esters. Some worn leather as well.

Taste: Light lactic tartness right up front. Black cherry creeps through and adds it's own brand of fruity tartness. Complete cherry. Skin, pit, flesh, juice, it's all there but it's not aggressive. Malts are lightly sweet with a touch of caramelization. Barrel adds a touch of damp wood and throws some vanilla, caramel, and toffee notes. Mildly citric. Tart edge increases as it warms. Soft leather with a vague hint of something almost like cocoa. Warming brings out some more of the powdery musty yeast. Damp. Almost clean on the finish.

Mouthfeel: Medium body with a light carbonation. A touch of astringency.

Overall: Exactly as promised.

It's worth drinking. The cherry and light lactic elements work well and the deep fruitiness is refreshing. Nicely funky.

I really enjoy this. The tart cherry melds perfectly with the sour Berliner flavors. Mild carbonation and little head, but still light and fresh tasting. Others complain of not enough bourbon, but I think the subtlety is a plus, the bourbon is here, but it's just 1 aspect of the flavor and aroma profile. It plays nice with others, it doesn't beat beat them into submission as (IMHO) too many other bourbon barrel beers do.

It's very well balanced a refreshing tart over a pleasant chocolaty sweetness, nothing dominates but there is a lot there to enjoy. I find it so enjoyable and drinkable.

Pour is dark ruby red with a tan head. Nose is wood, lactic acid, light sulfur, a bit of plastic and some cherry. Taste is much cleaner, lactic acid and a much nicer wood note. Cherry is much stronger and none of the slight plastic note. Faintly tart, gently carbonated finish on a medium body and a touch syrupy.
