There are those times, especially as the Christmas/Holiday break is beginning, that I simply want a Lager. This is one of those times & never mind that it is in a Bottle. Sometimes, even The CANQuest (tm) needs to take a break!

From the Bottle: "Jack's Abby Brewing's goal is to create truly remarkable beer that combines the strict standards of traditional German brewing with the innovative approach of American craft brewers. We specialize in lagers, which take longer to brew than ales but yield exceptionally rich flavors and smooth, crisp taste."; "All Jack's Abby lagers are unfiltered and unpasteurized. Sediment in the bottle is normal."; "The hardest part about making new and exciting hoppy beers is sourcing the hops you need. Most hops are bought under contracts which are signed two or three years in advance. We occasionally get opportunities to acquire small quantities of specialty hops that are enough for one batch of beer, but no more. 'Hopstitution' allows us to feature hops that we would not otherwise be able to make use of."

I Pop!ped the cap & started a slow, gentle C-Line pour into the awaiting glass. This resulted in the quick & brief formation of a finger of fizzy, foamy, rocky, bone-white head with modest retention. Color was a solid Amber (SRM = > 7, < 9) with NE-quality clarity. Nose had a light tropical fruitiness which was very pleasant, not at all overwhelming. Mouthfeel was medium, solid for a Lager. The taste had a lightly spicy fruitiness, like a dusting of black pepper on a tropical fruit salad. It might could work as my late Pops used to put salt on watermelon. This was like peppery mango or passionfruit - one of the denser, fleshier fruits for certain. Mmm. I used to subsist on tropical fruits for a while in the Navy & something like this really takes me back. This was very pleasant, very mellow, befitting a Lager. It had a tea-like mellowness, making it a fitting nightcap. Finish was semi-dry & very refreshing. A real find in my reefer! YMMV.
