House Lager pulls inspiration from the numerous country lagers, or landbiers, found in Franconia. It’s sweet and golden with a full malty body that comes from using a traditional German malt variety. A special beer for year-round enjoyment.

12 oz can poured into a flute glass.

Pours a mildly cloudy, somewhat golden yellow, very slightly dull in saturation. Produces a white frothy head, yielding a spotty ring of lacing, almost zero splotching.

Initial aroma is very yeasty and bready.

Initial taste is very very much like buttery crackers and yeast with a little astringency in the finish, being joined by a note of lilac or otherwise white floral something or other. There are some light hops in there, too, somewhat bright and grassy, but more dry than anything else.

Appearance: Pours a clear light golden straw color with a thin cap of white foam. No lacing.
Smell: Lemon candy, herbal, dough.
Taste: Like the smell only in reverse. Doughy malt body, sweet, a little lemon and herbal taste from the hops. Light bitterness. Crackery/grainy taste towards the finish. Peanut shell aftertaste.
Feel: Light to medium bodied, well carbonated, creamy, smooth.
Overall: A satisfying Helles.

Completely delicious, almost slightly too dry but stopping just short of "too". Somewhat above average hop twang, nice bready backend. Bitterness calms down as it warms slightly. A nearly perfect lager. Unfortunately it's getting harder and harder to find in my area, which is about a 3 hour drive from Massachusetts. Why? I dunno. I used to be able to find it in the closest grocery store.
Edit: it's available again. Hallelujah.

Jack's Abbey House Lager Growler purchased September, 2023.
The initial impression is a healthy golden body and a small white head that dissipates. The initial taste is a mild malt body with an initial bitter hop overlay. The bitterness dissipates fairly quickly, leaving a malt aftertaste. Actually this isn't too different from LIDL's cheap German Pilsener (Perlenbacher pilsner)? The House Lager might be a bit better than LIDLs.

Poured from a can into a pint glass
Appearance – The beer pours a clear golden color with a two-finger head of white foam. The head has a great level of retention, fading over time and leaving a good sum of foamy lace on the sides of the glass.
Smell – The aroma is heaviest of a grainy and bready smell mixed with a decent showing of caramel and some light pear. Along with these smells is a touch of yeast and a hint of toast.
Taste – The taste starts off with smooth, grainy bread taste mixed with some of the caramel that was in the nose and a bit of toffee. Along with these tastes comes a bit of doughiness and some yeast. As the taste advances the grain gets a bit lighter while the yeast and doughiness gests stronger, leaving one with a smooth bready taste to linger on the tongue.
Mouthfeel – The body of the brew is light to medium in thickness and creaminess with a higher carbonation level. For the style and the flavors, the feel is great and makes for a very easy drinker.
Overall – A very drinkable and flavorful brew. Nice for the style and a great summer/fall style beer.

Can no date. Purchased in FL. Pilsner glass.

A: pours a slightly hazy dark gold with bits of tiny particulate matter, moderate carbonation and three fingers of pillowy white head that lasts. Lacing in thick rings as I drink it down. Head lasts. Dinging it for the haze and sediment.

S: I’m getting over a cold, but as soon as I poured this I could smell a fruitiness from the glass. On closer inspection it is a honey sweetness, with a touch of lager sulfur. Not much on the nose.

T: lightly sweet, bready, honey, then bready again, closing on a touch of noble hops. Really straight down the middle, moderately sweet, supremely clean, mildest kiss of hops. This could go equally well with barbecue as with traditional German fare, and probably even grilled vegetables and fish. Really mild and crisp, but weighty on the palate.

M: medium weight on the tongue, not as well attenuated as you’d expect, but the moderate to high carbonation keeps it refreshing.

O: the best American helles I’ve had? Most others are either too hoppy, or slick and un-lagerlike. This is clean and crisp, but has a sweet impression and weighty feel on the palate. Really a masterclass in pale lager execution that would be in my fridge always if I could get it at home.
