We’re excited to present the next beer in our 2020 Keller Series - Marzen! While this style is best known for its popularity during Oktoberfest season, Märzens are more than fest beers. These German lagers are essentially amber beers brewed in March - März actually means "March" in German - and we wanted to pay homage to that with our March Kellerbier release.
This unfiltered lager is a riff on an older recipe of ours of the same name; an amber-hued Kellerbier featuring strong notes of toffee, toast, and biscuit.

Another nice, traditional German style lager from Jack's Abby. Amber-colored brew is mild, with toffee and biscuit flavor around a low-key malt profile. Topped by a solid, fluffy off-white head as well. Definitely not an aggressive beer, so relax with it and enjoy.

JACKS ABBY KELLER SERIES MARZEN 5/7/21
Poured from the 16 oz. can into an English nonick pint.
a: Clear amber with a half inch thick offwhite head which receded to thin surface foam and spotty lacing.
s: Mild caramel malt.
t: Follows the nose with balance of some hops. Sweetish finish.
m: Medium, good body and carbonation tingle.
o: An especially easy drinking marzen, not as malty as many but with a pleasant balance.

I was really impressed with this one; found it far superior to Copper Legend. While it isn't at the level of the German imports, is is right up there and is the best Marzen by an American brewer that I've had. I wish they would make this a regular offering.

Canned 2/16/21
Barely-hazy burnt orange, with one finger of pale tan head.
Smells of light caramel and toffee. Good smell, just a bit muted.
Taste is toffee, caramel, and bread crust, with some lingering mild bitterness, caramel (stronger that initial taste), and herbal/floral hop flavor. Drying finish
Feel is light-medium, initially barely slick/oily , with very, very fine , moderately-sharp carbonation bite finishing it off.
Overall, another good one from JA. :) Nice to have a fresh marzen, & not have to wait til September .

16 oz canned on 2/24/2020.
5.5% ABV // OG 13 Plato // IBUs 28
Deep amber in color with a slight haziness to it, otherwise it's clear. Big, frothy off-white head with good retention. Strong toasted malt and biscuit aroma with spicy hops. The flavor is more of the same with the spice becoming more prominent, but not overwhelming. It's almost rye-like in a way, but it's hard to tell if it's coming from the malt or the hops. Maybe both? Either way, it's a nicely balanced brew with a dry finish and clean feel to it. Medium bodied.
I do the majority of my Märzen drinking from September thru November, but this beer absolutely works for this time of year.

Pours slightly cloudy, copper in color with 1/4 inch head. Taste is honey wheat bread and some white sugar. Sweet, crisp, light bodied, medium-high carbonation. So glad I picked up a four. Excellent domestic version of the style. Could drink this all day.

16 oz can. Pours hazy orange with tall, long-lasting, fluffy white head. Aroma is of grassy hops and bready malt. Body is full and crisp. Grassy hops, grain and bready malt nicely balanced on the palate. Finish is long and almost dry. Great brew.

Strong showing. Light nut brown color. Head is a frothy white - more lasting than their beers usually show on head retention.
Flavor is more rounded and softer than Copper Legend. Malt character is velvety. Crushable.

A moderate pour from a 16-oz. can produced a thin finger of short lived fizzy off-white foam. On the border of slightly cloudy and very hazy amber-gold color body. I can see my fingers but I can't read through it.
Bready smell of both dough and fresh baked grainy bread. Very faint hops, a bit of spice in the background.
Semi-sweet with medium-low bitterness, there is a malty richness that is not overpowering. This Beer has an Ale-like taste profile while being lighter in body and well attenuated as a Lager. The finish is neutral with a noticeable rise in bitterness, it quickly drops off to a short lived spicy aftertaste. There are no outside flavors, its malt and yeast.
Medium-low bodied with assertive carbonation in reserve, overall smooth and a bit soft on the palate. Alcohol is well hidden. True to Marzen style except for the cloudiness, this Beer could be considered a Kellerbier/Zwickel.
