Brewed with local danko rye malt, this traditional German kellerbier is malty, sweet, and subtly spicy. Private Rye has a medium, bready body that is balanced with a light bitter finish. Like all of our kellerbiers, it is left unfiltered.

16-oz. can canned on 9/17/18 needed a strong pour to get a finger sized off-white head with short retention and minimal lace.
Pineapple-orange juice in color, hazy opaque appears yellow in front of light.
Rye bread and yeast dominate the smell with apple and baking spice.
Taste starts out a little on the bland side with rich bready malts filling in the middle, a faint silage funk and spicy hop bitterness rounds out the smooth clean finish.
Medium body with low carbonation, alcohol is hidden. Easy smooth drink.
As it warms the beginning of the taste improves as a tangy bitterness appears in front of the semi-sweet middle.

Pours a light medium fizzy head with low retention, low lacing, very hazy little cloudy orange tan color

Nose bread doughy malt, grainy, some fruity esters with light citrus, light candied orange notes

Taste more doughy malt, little creamy wheat like, soft lager, more fruity esters, light citrus, touch of bitterness, little creamy yeast protein finish, drier finish, bit more hop bitterness

Mouth is med to lighter bod, soft lager, medium carb

Overall not bad, decent base lager with nice kellerbier notes, and fruity esters, touch of hops, enjoyable

A: The beer is clear yellow in color and has some light hues of amber along with a light amount of visible carbonation. It poured with a quarter finger high white head that quickly settled down, but consistently left a short head covering the surface.
S: Light to moderate aromas of toasted malts are present in the nose along with hints of yeast.
T: The taste follows the smell and has moderate flavors of toasted malts along with a bit of associated sweetness. There are notes of yeast and some hints of spicy rye that try to peak through. A light amount of bitterness is perceptible.
M: It feels medium-bodied and somewhat "chewy" on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This kellerbier seemed a little maltier compared to others in the style and also had a touch of sweetness. I liked the spicy hints of rye, which lended a bit of complexity to the taste.

Picked up a can at the Craft Beer Cellar in Westford, MA to give it a try. I've previously enjoyed other cans in the Kellerbier series and discovered this one was no exception regarding my enjoyment. Excellent and quite a different take on a rye styled beer. Liked it well enough to pick up a few 4-packs on my next trip to CBC. Hope its availability lasts for awhile.

Pours a hazy golden orange with some floaties. Smell is bready malts. Taste is hearty bread with just a touch of sweetness that is balanced by a light bitterness and finishes dry. I get a bit of snap from the rye and there is a very nice balance with just a touch of spice. Each sip makes you want another, and this is extremely drinkable. Goes well with some roast pork tenderloin and Brussels sprouts. Another winner from Jack's Abby Keller series.

Hazy brownish-orange with three fingers of foamy, light tan head. Sloppy, soapy lacing.

Big aroma wet bread and light rye spice. Even a little skunk.

Modest breadiness carries over to the taste, joined by banana and bubblegum more than rye spiciness. A hint of sulfury skunk shows here, too, and there’s some light residual sweetness in the finish.

Medium bodied with strong carbonation in the otherwise soft mouthfeel.

Tasting this blind, I probably would have pegged it for a wheat beer before a rye beer. It’s not bad, but not what I expected going in, either. I may need to alter my expectations when it comes to Roggenbier. 9/17/18 canned on date.

Canned on 9/17/18

Pours a cloudy golden orange with 2 fingers of thick white head; excellent retention with a still-thick layer of foam remaining on the surface, and consistent soapy lacing spattered around the glass; a beautiful-looking lager all-around.

Aromas of clean malt, a bit of farmyard with some natural skunk to it, grainy spice, and some slight sweet, grassy undertones; good, but a bit too dominated by the earthy skunk element to let the rest of the bouquet flourish.

Taste profile starts with a crack of rye spice, balanced, lightly peppery, and with an earthy grittiness; earthy tones continue to dominate, inviting crisp, smooth malts and notes of clean grass and straw; somewhat one-dimensional, but does well with what it offers.

Mouthfeel is a smooth medium body with carbonation bolstering things toward the heavier side; somehow remains balanced in its weight, though, and stays impressively drinkable.

Well-built stuff, and although the flavor profile may leave something on the table, the beer’s other qualities round things out enough to produce an enjoyable result.
