Notes: It’s hard to imagine that after 11 years of exploring every corner of lager, that you could brew something new. But if there’s one thing we’ve learned in this time, it’s that there is so much more to learn. In the spirit of trying new things, learning new things and building a community of lager lovers, we teamed up with Bierstadt from Denver for this collaboration. Bierstadt has been equally committed to the craft of perfected lagers since their founding in 2016 and we are clearly cut from the same grain.

Together, we brewed a Munich Style Export Lager. This beer features a double decoction mash, that is then fermented in a traditional horizontal tank for 8 weeks, and krausened with a special yeast. We look forward to raising this one with our best lager friends.

collaboration with bierstadt in denver, real cool stuff here from two of the very best in the lager game. this is awesome stuff, sort of drinks like a festbier, but i am in the fall mood with my beer these days, and perhaps this is more pale than that, but its got a highly authentic german malt base, sort of helles-esque to me, but like full decocted grain character, its full essence, and its bone dry, incredible. its nutty, organic seeming, full of minerals and protein to me, and very much hits on the harvest time vibes, hay and straw and freshly fallen leaves, noble hops in support, along with some very lively lager yeast perhaps run a little warm, this has some real character. blonde and clearish, frothy headed from the tap, looks how i want it to. i love the decoction mashing, its a method thats almost mandatory for lager like this, but i feel like so few breweries are doing that work, so i appreciate it here, once you catch on to what it does to the grain flavor and texture in the beer, its impossible to miss ever again. there is a nice hoppy back end to this, dried grass and cut flowers with slight juniper character and a little bitterness to help the finish. this is frothy feeling, fluffy and fuller for still being light, close to dry, right on for drinkability, fantastic carbonation, super small bubbles, lingering nuttiness from the grain, a honey note, even a hint of oxidation which kind of works in its favor. a great lager overall, traditional and distinctive at the same time, of the finest quality. so glad to have been able to drink this!

Can date missed and unreadable
Pours a frothy rich creamy 2 finger head with great retention, soapy lacing, hazy deep gold color

Nose rich malt, cereal, bread dough even a little batter, vanilla cake batter, sweet malt, mild floral herbal hop

Taste rich malts again, semi sweet, doughy and a touch creamy, soft juicy lager, a layered complex decoction mash, more cake batter and bread dough, then floral to spicy hops, med lighter bitterness up front with big spicy hop bitterness lingering on the dry finish

Mouth is med bod, soft lager, med frothy carb

Overall quite nice

From a 16 oz can sampled on September 25, 2022.

The appearance is a slightly cloudy golden yellow under a tremendous white head.

Aroma of biscuit and bread crumbs. A barley character and light floral hops.

Medium mouthfeel.

The taste is sweet and bready with a notable barley character. Mildly dry finish. Not bad

On tap at The Sheffield in Brighton, NY.

This one pours a golden vibrant yellow color, with a small head, and lots of lacing.

This smells like biscuity and not too sweet malt, peppery hops, dough, and some grassiness.

This is two lager kings working together – of course it’s gonna be excellent. It’s got a real tight malt character to it – slightly doughy, toasty, and biscuity, with a light but well balanced grassy and slightly peppery hop character.

This is light bodied, super crisp and well attenuated, with a fantastic drinkability.

It’s hard to find much flaw here – East Coast lager excellence paired with Rocky Mountain lager excellence. What could go wrong?

Pours a clear, rich golden color with a gorgeous fluffy white head that lasts, falling to a quarter inch cap with tenacious cling to the glass.

Sweet and toasty hits the nose first. It's a honey-like sweetness. The hops are floral and herbaceous with a slight grassiness and a very faint spiciness.

The taste opens slightly sweet with a bready malt flavor. Then there's a bunch of kids in this pool. The malt carries through, but there is a fairly strong hop note that leans more floral than the nose suggests. There's still some herbal grassiness, but not very pronounced. The sweetness starts to lean towards honey or maybe light brown sugar, and in the aftertaste it is almost a caramel flavor. There's just a hint of orange that I still don't notice in the smell, and the finish leaves a little peppery tingle behind that gets a little more pronounced on repeat sips. Everything rides on that malt backbone, though. It does have that flavor I am beginning to associate with decoction brewing but can't quite nail down - I suspect there's some browning reactions in that cooking process that bolster the toasted maltiness.

Light bodied, moderately carbonated, and the self-replenishing head lends it a slight foamy feel. Mildly bitter, fairly crisp, highly drinkable at 5.7%. Very nicely balanced on all the attributes.

Wow...not disappointed in this one at all. Worthy.

16oz can poured into a Sam Adams glass

A- pours a golden-straw color with just a hint of haze, two finger pillowy white head has great retention long after the pour

S- cracker malts, honey, floral and spicy hops, hint of grass, cracked pepper

T- slightly sweet and malty up front with notes of doughy bread and honey, followed by some toasted grains. Mid-palate brings out a solid base of spicy and peppery floral hops. The finish gives a perfect balance of bready malt and spicy floral hops, that stick around on the linger

M- light body with moderate carbonation leads to a foamy mouthfeel that continues into a crisp finish, high drinkability

O- full flavored with that remarkable balance that you expect from the style, well done

There is no date on the can. The pour is golden yellow with a nice & steady flow of carbonation. The taste is honey, lemon drop, & grains. I don't see a date on the can anywhere. Furthermore, this is darn impressive lager, do yourself a grab a can of this stuff. Cheers! B

Canned 7/1/22

Man, I haven’t had a Dortmunder in a long ass time. Now I find one that’s a collaboration between 2 of the kings of the American Lager brewing scene, Jack’s Abby and Bierstadt! Let’s see what happens when these 2 put their brains together for a rather obscure style

Pours a cloudy deep gold with 3 fingers of soapy white head that slowly fades to a thin cap and leaves decent lacing

It’s wonderfully toasty and sweet in the nose, but there’s still a nice bite to it. I’m picking up on aromas of toasted grain, sweet honey, bready malt, herbal hops, orange zest, and light pepper

It leans a bit more into the sweeter aspect in taste which I don’t prefer but it’s still quite good. On the front end of the sip I’m tasting bready malt, honey, herbal hops, dark toast, white pepper, toffee, and light orange rind. The swallow brings notes of toasted grain, sweet honey, bready malt, floral hops, white pepper, and light brown sugar

A light medium body pairs with gentle carbonation, resulting in a crisp and refreshing beer. Finishes mostly dry with a slight hop bite

This is good stuff. Again, a little sweeter than I would’ve liked, but a solid summer beer

On the nose we've got honey, bread dough, orange citrus, and some floral hops. The taste begins with a short bite of orange citrus, but the malt quickly comes to the fore with white bread, biscuit, and honey sweetness, with more toasted malt on the swallow. Bitter and spicy hops on the finish balance out the sweetness nicely. A light to medium body with moderate carbonation creates a wonderfully smooth beer.
