Style: American Pale Lager

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 6.70%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
This lager harmoniously combines lager yeast fermentation and west coast IPA hops. Our India style Pale Lager is like a traditional IPA but with a twist - it’s fermented cold and aged for extended periods. A blend of classic American hops creates a huge tropical fruit and citrusy hop aroma. A dry finish accentuates the pleasant bitterness and hop profile. Hoponius Union uses locally grown dehulled spelt from MA.

I REALLY love this beer. I wasn't sure what to expect from an IPL vs. an IPA since the fermentation process is a bit different but it is so delicious. Was worried that the lager wouldn't pack a punch but it certainly does.

I think this is a benchmark beer for its style. Love the hop flavor it drinks like an IPA. Better than Harpoon IPA any day. Jack's Abby is the champion of Lagers and Hoponius Union is one that I buy by the 12 pack!

This beer was a pleasure to drink. The smell was absolutely incredible. Such fresh hints of citrus and piney hops are easily identifiable. The taste is just as good. Refreshing, with a great taste of almost a sweet spiciness. The aftertaste has notes of citrus and and the perfect level of carbonation render this a very crisp and delicious beer. Also this is extremely drinkable.

I feel as though I'm always approaching this beer the wrong way. I drink it expecting it to be an IPA, and then I'm disappointed, but I need to remember that it's not, and has its own character. It's got a kind a softness that you don't find in an IPA, plus there is a dryness at the end.

This was poured into a pilsener glass. The appearance was a slightly bronzed orange color with a one and a half foamy white head. After it dissipated, clingy and messy lacing stuck in a slight bubbly yet some light rings do end up showing their appearance. The smell started off with a sweet grassy and light spiced (black pepper) rolling into a slight breadiness. The taste reminisced the aroma sweetly adding the spice to balance. There’s a slight sweet grassy to semi-spiced aftertaste running into the finish slyly. On the palate, this one sat about a light on the body with a nice sessionability about it. Carbonation hits very low yet eloquently allows a light dryness hitting my tongue. Overall, for the most part, this is a really nice India Pale lager that I would have again.

P- Poured from a 12 oz can,into a Cigar City pint glass.First beer sampled from the Jack's Abby variety 12 pack.Date on the 12 pack is MAR 24 2017.

L- Thin soapy white head with low retention, and sticky lacing.Slightly hazy straw colored body, with moderate clarity.Low amount of carbonation, and low amount of sediment.

S - On the nose I get bright tropical hop notes consisting of mango. Also getting bright citrus hop aromas consisting of tangerine, orange, and grapefruit hop notes.Trace elements of bready biscuit malt notes as well.

T- The palate follows the nose with grapefruit and tangerine citrus up front, some tropical mango in the middle, and some bitter pine hops, balanced by bready malt on the back end.

F- The mouth feel is light bodied with a sticky texture.Minimum amount of oxidation on the tongue, with a dry yet easy finish.

O- This is a really good IPL.Nice easy drinker with just enough hoppy bitterness. If you like a hopped up pale lager, that is light on bitterness,I recommend you give it a try.I will definitely drink this one again in the future.
