Style: American Pale Lager

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 6.70%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
This lager harmoniously combines lager yeast fermentation and west coast IPA hops. Our India style Pale Lager is like a traditional IPA but with a twist - it’s fermented cold and aged for extended periods. A blend of classic American hops creates a huge tropical fruit and citrusy hop aroma. A dry finish accentuates the pleasant bitterness and hop profile. Hoponius Union uses locally grown dehulled spelt from MA.

Holy crap, good on the beer of the month club I got as a Christmas gift to come through with something like this! 12 oz bottle into a teku.

Appearance: Pours a clearish golden color. The head is a finger high, and white in shade. Retention isn't the best, but the texture is soft enough. Plenty of lacing sticks to the glass. (3.5)

Smell: Well, it's just like a good west coast IPA...ONLY A LAGER! I get a decent amount of grapefruit, pine, flowers, melon, and a slight touch of sweet malt. Unfortunately, the nose seems somewhat dinky - what's here is good, there just isn't enough of it. A slightly disappointing nose, considering it's rated a 95 overall. (3.25)

Taste: This works FAR better. It starts off with some hoppy goodness: a mix of melon, mango, grapefruit, and pine. The finish is malty and slightly sweet yet not ridiculous. But the best part? IT'S DELICATE! It's one thing for a pilsner to be delicate - it's another thing entirely for a big IPL to have such softness. Its overall balance is utterly superb. Some of the notes blend together a bit too well, but this is a great-tasting lager otherwise. (4)

Mouthfeel: While it's crisp like any good lager should be, it's also a bit heavy. Luckily, it's very soft without being too flabby. Carbonation is actually gentle by lager standards. Drinkability isn't amazing, but it's a very nice beer to savor. (3.75)

Overall: The nose let me down, but the taste and feel work far better. I like how this uses its lager character to soften the edges of the typical IPA without blunting them excessively. I could conceivably drink this all day without chugging it moronically - nice to know the first beer I had from Jack's Abby was a winner! (4)

3.77/5: One of the better IPLs I've sampled

Standard IPA / IPL done really well--I get a nuttiness from the hop or malt bill that makes this pretty interesting.

Poured into a willy glass. Super clear golden yellow with a half finger or so white whispy head that leaves enormous lace. Aroma is not real prominent but I did pick up some citrus and pine. Taste is nice, super clean, with some malty sweetness followed by pine and citrus. Mouth is great. Overall, a really enjoyable hoppy lager

Really great beer

Pours beautiful gold with coppery hues and slightly cloudy appearance. Very nice look.

Smell is pretty potent and hits you with piney smells with a hint of sweet grass. Very inviting.

Upon first sip smell and taste merge with the creamy slick and oily mouthfeel to produce a wonderful sensation.

Taste is too complex to put into words yet makes perfect sense. Hop level is perfect for the malts and the effects of the yeast and lagerization blend it so nicely. Hops -> malts -> crisp sweetness where the whole thing just sails along like the santa maria through buttery golden clouds of mashed potatoes.

I mean wow, this is the ipl that all others wish they were. Absolutely fantastic and a must try.

I have several IPAs that I love but this beer is a real treat. It's got a great flavor profile and I find it slightly creamier than the IPAs I typically enjoy. Every time I have one I'm pleasantly surprised, and I'm now buying it by the case at my local Costco. This is a truly delicious beer that I often recommend.

Look: Clear gold body. White frisky head.
Smell: I smell something with quality and sweetness.
Taste: Muted everything but surging with energy and taste. Maybe it's because of my allergies.
Feel: Decent. Not bad. It flows.

Overall: Everything I have had from Jack's Abby in the recent past has been a nice treat. This is no exception. I like it, but prefer beer with more "Zing."

Very clean tasting IPL. I think this beer rivals a lot of very good IPA's.
