Very Good
Jabby BrauJabby Brau
Notes: Deep golden in color, this low ABV lager balances Pilsner and Munich malt with an aromatic American hop aroma. This beer starts hoppy but finishes unexpectedly malty with very low bitterness. Impressively flavorful and drinkable for the lightest beer we brew. We dub this beer a "Session Lager," as we once again brew a lager in a beer style of its own. Uses local Soft Red Winter Wheat from Four Star Farms.

From BeerAdvocate magazine Issue #68 (Spetember 2012):

LOOK: Pale yellow, touched with haze, topped with thick white foam

SMELL: Cereal malts, biscuit, clean

TASTE: Creamy, lively mouthfeel, light-bodied, wheaty, grain, lemony hop bite, lime oil, grassy, herbal, dry, biscuity linger

A “Session Lager” from this all lager brewery, brewed with Pilsner and Munich malt, local soft red winter wheat and American hops. At only 20 IBUs it packs plenty of hop flavor without overpowering the delicate malt balance, and the use of wheat is a distinct twist-—perhaps too distinct—but works overall. A very solid lager.

Poured from the bottle into a pilsner style glass.

Deep orange amber, to pale golden yellow body color. Real dark and impressive for a classic lager, with some mild amounts of carbonation, and a good simple two finger creamy head. Bit of staying power there as well, as it slowly settles to one finger.

Real big caramel sweetness, but with a clean aroma. Mild grains and a bit of light brown sugar quality to go with it. Not big on the hop angle, if very indistinct. Some mild clean grapefruit perhaps kicking out.

Palate is quite nice and simple. Clean caramel, almost bock like but considerably lighter in flavor and feel. Almost chewy body, but with lighter abv seems to come much easier drinking, but not wet or washed out which is a good feeling. Muted hop quality, but definitely more going for the malt angle which is done real nicely.

Reminds me of a sessionable lighter version of a bock, real solid brew.

Poured into a perfect pint. Big thanks to Dope for this.

3.5 A: Mildly hazed light orange color. Two fingers of frothy off-white head. Retention is average and a bit of lacing if left.

4.0 S: Quite hoppy. Herbal, earthy, and mildly floral. Grainy malts underneath with a light, neutral malt sweetness. Simple, but pleasant.

4.0 T: Good bit of hop flavor as well with more earth anf floral and a bit less herbal. Low bitterness. Grainy maltiness with a sweet finish.

4.0 M: Light to lighter medium body. Good moderate carbonation. Clean and crisp, quite crisp.

4.0 D: Solid, hoppy lager. I can see myself putting down a few of these while watching some NFL games.

Appearance: 1/2 inch head, gold in color, clear, high carbonation

Smell: straw and citrus hops

Taste: grass, light honey-sugar, and a citrus hoppy end

Mouthfeel: high carbonation, light bodied, sweet start with a bitter lasting middle

Overall: Given the style, this one is very good. It is a nice and hoppy lager that I would look for again and an excellent value. That said, if I was not grading to style, my marks would be closer to a 3.5. While this is clean and very well done, there is just something missing that I cannot put my finger on.

A - Clear, deep gold. Small white head. Moderate lacing.

S - Subtle oats, malted barley, biscuit.

T - Smooth matly biscuit, cut of with the crisp spicy hops.

M - Thin, refreshing good carbonation.

O - Excellent lager. Like the idea this is a session at 4.5% One of the better craft lagers I've enjoyed.
