Notes: Big, Bold, and Black. This unusual lager style has many similarities to Imperial Stouts. A lengthy conditioning period creates a silky smooth chocolatey mouth feel enhanced by the use of oats and brown sugar. Noticeable sweetness gets balanced by roasted malt and hop bitterness. At 10% alcohol by volume, this beer is sure to keep you warm on a cold winter night.

I received a couple twelve ounce bottles in the latest round of NBS/BIF courtesy of BA cavedave. There is a batch code/date on the bottle reading #7 1814012116. Pouring this in my 13oz. stout/porter glass for the taste drive!

Look- It pours a dark oily brown leaving a generous and lively amount of mocha colored foam.

Smell- Bakers chocolate, dark roasted malt, molasses, black licorice and a hint of floral hops hiding in the back.

Taste- Chocolate malt, tobacco, molasses, some black licorice and wood. There are some floral notes that try to surface in the finish.

Feel- Oily and a bit on the effervescent side with a crisp dry finish.

Overall- A very flavorful example of the style. While dark, roasty and chocolatey, there is a slightly hoppy quality that reminds me of some Three Floyd's stouts/porters. Topless Wytch comes to mind and that's good company in my opinion. A very solid beer, I'm glad I have one more. I may cellar it a short while for comparison?

Amazing beer. Dark and creamy body with and incredibly foamy and milkshaky head. Smell is reminiscent of strong coffee, chocolate, and tiramisu. Taste is even more vivid and lively. Incredible taste from the mix of bitter, salty, and sweet! Amazing beer. Hides the alcohol amazingly too. Great value as well. Wonderful!

The beer pours out into a Snifter glass a deep dark brown and almost black color with 1/2" dark tan head that soon recedes to a ring of foam and a thin, patchy layer on the surface of the liquid. Sipping creates a sheet of foam that slides back down to the surface leaving behind scattered small patches of lacing. By midway through the beer there’s almost nothing left of the foam.

The aromas include lots of chocolate, along with some dark caramel and just a hint of dark roasted malt.

The flavors are much as expected from the nose with the chocolate and some sweetness upfront. Both are well backed up the dark caramel and roasted malt. There’s a hint of vanilla and some very light bitter character. The alcohol is well concealed here.

The mouthfeel is on the full side of medium bodied and silky smooth with very light carbonation. The finish begins as the chocolate, caramel and sweetness give way to an almost dry, roasted bitterness that moves to the back of the palate and slowly disappears.

Overall a very nice beer that I’ll be happy to have again in the future. The flavors are well integrated and none seems to really dominate the beer. But, given the ABV (10%), it is, for me, a one a night beer for sipping with a good book to read.

Bottle courtesy of Alex. Thank you so much buddy.

Black...looks nice

Smells of nuts, roast, fudge, and smoke....smells nice

Taste follows suit....dash of booze, nutty fudge, smoke, roast, and a charry tarry finish....tastes nice

I've loved the BA variants and it's a pleasure to see where these beers began. A fantastic Baltic Porter.

Sampled from a 500ml bottle purchased at Yankee Spirits in Attleboro, MA. Date was 12/3/2013.

A - A deep brown with some light coming through at the edges. A big tan head of large bubbles.

S - Hints of toast and cocoa. Not a strong aroma.

T - A mild sweetness with elements of brown sugar, bread, biscuits and raisins. Smooth with no rough edges. A slight bitterness in the finish. The alcohol is well hidden.

M - Creamy with a low carbonation. It slides down nicely.

O - Tasty, smooth and warming. Nice for a cold New England night.
