Pours pitch black with a creamy khaki head that sticks around pretty well, eventually dropping to a ring. Okay retention; sheets of random lacing. (4.25)

Caramelized sugar and whiskey astringency, some cinnamon-like spiciness, baker's cocoa, blackberry. (4.25)

Rich sweet malt layers with smooth vanilla flavor from the barrel. Smooth layers of sugars, maple, oak, candied bourbon, vanilla, and mocha. (4.5)

Smooth and a little slick, gentle carbonation, smooth finish. (4.25)

This is a smooth, together, tasty fucking beer.
It is lovely in the glass with lacy lacing. The flavors and aromas are perfectly melded together, balanced, inviting and generally good. Roast sugar, roast malt, no burnt astringency, no heat, vanilla barrel character. Mmmm. Well-hidden alcohol, nice mellow bourbon barrel presence. As with all their beers, everything is just as it should be, restrained and well-balanced.
I would definitely have this one again. (4.25)

This one is pretty heavy-looking, just about black with a tan head somewhere between one and two fingers in height. It displays good retention, remaining creamy, thick and dense while depositing a mix of spotty and patchy lacing on the glass.
The bourbon definitely shows, with vanilla, wood and some dark fruits underneath a heavy, rich and chocolaty overtone with maybe just a touch of roast. It gives a little more of a baker's chocolate in the taste but ups vanilla and brown sugar sweetness while adding a touch of sting in the heat. Roast does build, and there's a hint of leafy hoppiness, but the thick and heavy sweetness is what is most heavily showcased.
The body is thick and full, as expected, rich and smooth. The alcohol doesn't thin it but adds a nice heat in the feel that may accentuate the smoothness. Carbonation is moderate, just enough to keep it moving well.
While this is an excellent beer, it's a bit better if the sweetness doesn't border oppressive. There's excellent use of the barrel and some good complexity, though, and that is not to say it isn't fantastic.

Pours a darkest brown with a finger of dark tan lather atop. Lather lasts long. Lace languishes lovingly. Beautiful.

Caramel, vanilla, and bourbon notes, lighter oaky fragrance, with even lighter yeasty tart, chocolate, and coffee joining the party in my nose. Not strong, but very seductive aroma.

Thankfully much more full flavored than the aroma suggested. Doubly thankfully all the flavors of the aroma are here in bright, clean, stronger presentation. To put this in scientific terms, this beer is fucking delicious. Some righteous herbal bitter comes to rescue the end of sip from being too sweet, and alcohol spice adds just the right touch to turn this into the most delicious Baltic Porter imaginable. Stupid delicious.

Med. carb., med. bodied, med. viscosity and killer finish. Pretty much just right to frame the flavors excellently.

A homerun from Jack's Abby. Barrel notes add a perfect touch to a base beer that is magnificent in its own right. Highest recommendation.

LOOK: dark black, thin looking. Small off white head.

AROMA: malt, brown sugar. Touch of bourbon later, but very subdued.

TASTE: more whiskey here, brown sugar, some cocoa. Malt. Classic dry baltic porter with some extra flavor.

FEEL: mostly flat, medium thick. Still a whiskey-like astringent bite in the finish.

Pretty tasty.

Spring of 2017 - this beautiful beer is back! Poured a very dark black into the glass, with a short-lived inch of yellow head. Strong aroma of vanilla and sugar. Taste of more vanilla, dark chocolate, stronger-than-usual hop presence, and very evident alcohol taste in the palate. Medium body, not a whole lot of carbonation. Overall good balance, but sourness stands out a bit. Aftertaste of toast. This is definitely one to drink slowly on a cold winter night.

Bottle from 4/2014 and won by me in auction. Assume proper care was kept. Poured into teku glass.

L: 1F minimal head with no lacing and only a thin off-white ring. Beer is a perfect black.

S: Bourbon barrel is up front, but not overwhelmingly so. Cocoa, caramel, vanilla, and finally roasted malts come next. No hint of alcohol. Quite nice.

T: Follows nose to a large extent. Bourbon barrel up front, cocoa, caramel, vanilla next and as is usual the cocoa and vanilla qualities carry through the finish. Roasted and maybe slightly burnt malts on the finish and there is a little bit of bitterness and maybe even a touch of the Four Roses that was in the barrel. Very little hint of alcohol. Quite solid and tasty.

F: Definitely retains the quality of a porter as it is on the light side of medium with some carbonation extant, so you do get a bit of drying. Very solid construction and balance is quite good. No idea what this was like newly bottled, but flavors do seem to have rounded and mellowed nicely.

O: Excellent barrel-aged porter. Since I will be in the area in April, I will check to see if this years vintage is available and see what I can cellar.

Pours an extremely dark brown, you can get a foamy head with an aggressive pour if desired; minimal lacing. Not much to the nose; roasted malts, dark roast coffee, molasses, bittersweet chocolate, light barrel aroma. Smells a little yeasty. Rich and creamy, lots of dark malt, dark chocolate, brown sugar, sweet but not cloying, light roast coffee finish that lingers nicely. Nice amount of carbonation that gives the beer a creamy mouthfeel. ABV is well hidden. Overall this is a nice beer, not an aggressive amount of bourbon barrel presence, making it a smooth, elegant example of the style.

500ml bottle, purchased 1/3/18, so I think it is very fresh

2017 release

L -- Same as regular Framinghammer, but with a much smaller and shorter lasting head
S -- Bourbon, smokey malts, a little bit if chocolate. Mostly bourbon, though
T -- Damn this is good. Lots of woody bourbon flavors that are perfectly balanced with the chocolate and coffee goodness of Framinghammer. The brown sugar sweetness gives all the flavors a nice backbone to offset the intense flavors.
F -- Big and potent. Very drinkable and very balanced
O -- It's a little pricey, but I'd buy a bottle a year if I can get it. I imagine that as this beer ages, the bourbon aromas and flavors lessen, allowing for a more nuanced palate. I definitely like it as is, though, and from reading prior reviews it seems like this release was much more barrel-forward, which is good news.

Overall: A great Baltic porter from Jack's Abbey. My only complaint is there isn't enough barrel.

Look - Pours a pitch black color with a thin ring of tan head that quickly dissolves, no lacing.
Aroma - Sweet vanilla, burnt toast, licorice, clean alcohol.
Taste - Tangy and dry up front, mild bitterness, brown sugar towards the middle, brown bread and roasted malt towards the end, the finish has a bit of bourbon, alcohol and a lingering charred note. Dry aftertaste.
Feel - Medium-Full bodied, low carbonation, a little slick, faint alcohol warmth, dry.

Overall - Delicious beer.

The appearance is a dark brown/black colored body with a finger’s worth of head that quickly dies and leaves a film of lacing sticking to the glass. The smell has chocolate malts, light coffee, dark fruits (plum, raisins and figs - more or less...??). The taste is sweet and bitter at different times through the previously mentioned flavors with added vanilla and bourbon, dry sweet aftertaste and finish. On the palate its about a medium and smooth, wow, how smooth, probably one of the smoothest Baltic Porters I’ve ever had. Alcohol is hidden well. Carbonation is right on the mark. Overall, wow, well balanced Baltic Porter that impressed me with some nice complexities that make it superior in its style.

Pours a three finger tan head that fades slowly to a thin layer leaving some lace. Black color, no highlights. Medium carbonation and medium bodied. Burnt malt and chocolate nose and flavor is sugary malt but nearly balanced with hop bitterness, nice Baltic porter. $9.95 for a 500ml bottle from Colonial Spirits Acton, Ma.

After yet another very busy work day today I opted to splurge on a 16.9l bottle for $9.75. Digging in while laxing out in The 'Zebo.

Poured most into a small tulip. It is dense and opaque, an oily dark brown brew with a very thin ring of beige foam at the edges. Lacing is quite sparse. Smell has some decent choco and caramel with some subtle bourbon aromas. Body is a good medium all-around, and the prickle is light

Taste has a healthy amount of dark chocolate and cocoa. Has a smidge of vanilla plus some brown sugar action, with some bourbon notes lurking in the background. Flavors run the gamut from sweetish brown sugar to dryish, roasty, bitter cocoa. I was expecting some more "wow here, but this is still quite solid. Prosit!!

Reviewing a 500 ml bottle poured into my snifter at cellar temperature. the beer pours a dark chocolate brown color with almost no light passing through my glass. A dense creamy tan head of 4 cm foams up with a gentle pour and the foam fades slowly to a sturdy edge layer and complete surface covering. An impressive looking beer.
The aroma is dark chocolate, vanilla notes and bourbon scents. I also get some brown sugar and molasses, no hops and the booze is well hidden, with no black pepper or general spiciness.
First sip reveals a silky smooth creamy textured body with soft mild carbonation and average body. Very easy drinking beer all around.
The flavor is lots of malt with dark chocolate, molasses, brown sugar and a bit of roast, but no hops. I do get a little bit of booze on the finish with some warmth on each swallow. There is some sweet bourbon but only a little bit in the middle of each mouthful.
The beer s a great malt lovers brew and I enjoy it a lot. No hops and fairly well hidden booze. This is a winner and I will buy this again.

Brown color. Small to nonexistent head. No lace.

Sweet aroma of higher alcohol brews, like a doppelbock or barley wine. Yet, there's no alcohol warmth to the nose.

The flavor mimics the smell with dark chocolates and cherries added. I also finally get some alcohol warmth in the swallow. The body is rich and the carbonation low. Definitely a sipping beer. The finish leaves almost a Kailua effect with coffee and warmth.

Pours black as night with a thin quickly dissipating lightly tanned head and a slick oily look to it. Smells of bourbon and oak followed by tons of roasted sweet malt and bakers chocolate. Taste is a smooth blend extra toasted bread, roasted coffee and chocolate, and boozy barrel goodness. A slick coating of the mouth and a rich feel comes from this slightly alcoholic feeling concoction. Overall, this is an outstanding BA beer, and I am very much looking forward to the other variations. Thanks Tim! Cheers!

Poured from a 16.9oz bottle (no Bottled On or Best By Date, but I know it was bottled in the first quarter of 2014) into an oversized (18oz) balloon/snifter glass.

A- Pours nearly pitch-black with ruby red highlights noticed at the extreme edges of the glass. The head was khaki in color, yet climbed to less than 1-finger and dissipated rather quickly. This behavior is not surprising for a big and barrel-aged beer. (4.75)

S- Heady aromatics that comprise largely of bourbon, milk chocolate, espresso and vanilla. Although present, subtle notes of coconut and oak tannin are detected. Based on the aroma alone, Baltic Porter is a rather conservative classification for this beer, as it smells more like a bourbon-barrel aged Imperial Stout a la Founders KBS and Goose Island BCBS. (4.75)

T- Much like the nose, bourbon soaked milk chocolate hits first followed by a bourbon soaked coffee bean astringency. The vanilla is also present in the backend and its essence helps smooth things out, providing another ancillary sweetness. (4.5)

M- This is where the Lager yeast strain shines and is somewhat hard to describe: the body of the beer has an initial sensation of being rather full-bodied. However, the palate is left feeling extremely 'light' after the sip. This attribute is contributed by none other than the yeast (and Barrel-Aged Blockhead is another to prove this point). Although sweet, it is far from cloying and the coffee-like astringency on the finish is quite intense. However, a beer of this nature should be a bit brash, and Barrel-Aged Framinghammer is happy to oblige. (4.75)

O- Along with Shmaltz Brewing Co.'s Coney Island Barrel-Aged Blockhead (an Imperial Bock aged in Bourbon Barrels), this is one of the few barrel-aged lagers I am aware of (another being 'Baby Maker,' also from Jack's Abby). This is a massive beer that once again proves that Lager yeast can rightfully due the job of Ale yeast, producing a bombastic Baltic Porter (or better yet because of its roastiness, Russian Imperial Stout) aged in Bourbon Barrels creating a particularly satisfying result. The barrel-aging is significant and only enhances an already well made beer...think again BCBS and KBS! (4.75)

The impact on a wonderful beer from the bourbon barrels is minimal, but detrimental. The bourbon and vanilla tilt the balance of the base beer too far to the sweet side. The delicate balance and subtle nuances are all but lost and what takes their place isn't an improvement. Enjoyable enough, but not one to revisit.

A: Pitch black with one finger light tan head lasting for a short time and leaving some light lacing.

S: Bourbon, cocoa powder, molasses, and rich roasted malts

T: Rich dark chocolate, vanilla, bourbon, and molasses.

M: Medium to full body with average carbonation. Finish is slightly sweet and dry.

O: Superior BA porter. Another great beer from Jack’s Abbey.

one pint .9oz bottle into a goblet. Bottled 3/7/17, so closing in on 4 months old.

Jet black body, small tan head which very quickly dissipates to a ring and faint covering, then just a faint ring.

no aroma at all, nothing good, nothing bad.

bourbon, some chocolate, and a slick vanilla are the primary tastes. slightly sweet. a bit too heavy on the bourbon for this particular palate.

Below medium on the mouth, slightly oily and bourbon on the finish.

Overall, a bit too much booze and a bit too little body on this one for me. lovers of a bourbon smack in the mouth would likely enjoy it more than me.

A- Black with a two finger little mocha head.

S- Cocoa, bourbon, some vanilla, roasted malts, some brown sugar.

T- Bourbon, some oak, roasted malts, some semi-sweet chocolate, some vanilla, some brown sugar and dark fruits.

M- Smooth, medium body.

O- A solid barrel aged porter, bourbon is a little on the heavy side but not overwhelming.

500ml bottle, served in a willi becher glass. Pours a dark black body, slight cola hue when held up to the light but otherwise opaque black; one finger offwhite head, good retention and no lacing. Smell is rich cocoa powder, dark chocolate, light bourbon, touch of smoke, milk chocolate and chocolate chip cookie batter. Flavour is a rich combination of chocolate chip, cocoa, light espresso, touch of smoky bourbon as well as a touch of dark fruit and licorice. Complex, rich and lacks for no depth. Mouthfeel is medium fuller bodied, good carbonation, creamy and rich, smooth and light earthy finish.

Thanks to @thebeers for this one from a ninja box during NBS BIF #8. The base beer has been on my radar for a far while now, let's see what I think of this variant.

16oz bottle poured into 10oz goblet. Poured a solid black color with just the thinnest cap of tan head that had low retention and lacing.

The aroma was amazing, solid malt base, just enough bourbon to pique the interest, and some oak from the barrel, all very nicely blended together. Every aspect got its due, and nothing dominated. Same on the tongue, just more like an exploded diagram of a piece of equipment: everything is shown, yet you can see how it all works together.

The body was fairly typical, perhaps just a wee touch on the thin side, and finished sweet, then surprisingly dried out. Drinkability was awesome, I coulda knocked back a few of these, and looked forward to more. Overall, an awesome brew that actually exceeds its hype. A must try.
