Poured from a 2014 pint bottle into a stout glass. Drink a baltic porter from Jacks Abby and you'll understand why this choice of glassware makes perfect sense.

Comparing this to the standard issue Framinghammer seems entirely appropriate to help form opinions on each beer. I was a fan of that brew, and its a close call between these two as to which I prefer.

The bourbon barrel aging process is readily apparent in the aroma and especially the flavor on this BA baltic. I would describe the alcohol note as fairly warm bordering on hot. More pronounced than the regular Framinghammer for sure.

Wood notes are present on the tongue, accompanied by the unmistakable astringent bourbon character on the tongue. Exhaling the fumes from this beer further enhances the slight smokiness and caramel qualities in bourbon.

Very nice to drink, would love to pair this with a steak or a rich stew. Excellent beer.

500mL bottle. Pours a pitch black with a ruby hue and over an inch of frothy tan head. Lots of lacing. Slightly boozey aroma with lots of cocoa, dark chocolate, vanilla, caramel and maybe a hint of coconut. A bit smokey. The taste is lots of cocoa and dark chocolate. Earthy with some smoke. Good amount of Bourbon flavor, especially towards the end. Pretty balanced for a BA beer. Finishes with more of the smoke and roasty taste with some more cocoa. Medium bodied. I love Framinghammer, so I was excited to try the Barrel Aged versions. This one does not disappoint.

Brew pours a dark black with almost purplish highlights, topped by a sizable dark tan head. Great retention and nice lacing.

Bourbon character is a bit strong on the aroma, but simultaneously thin, if that makes sense. Quite a bit of coconut and vanilla. Touch of chocolate from the malts in the background, and some banana from the yeast.

Flavor is much more balanced and representative of the base brew. If regular Framinghammer is a boozy chocolate banana smoothie, then this is a barrel aged chocolate banana smoothie. Quite a bit of roast, especially lingering on the aftertaste as a long, wet, bitter finish.

Thick, lively, full mouthfeel, albeit a touch thinner than regular Framinghammer, and carrying more heat. Very nice feel for the style, although the alcohol shows a little crudely for 10%. A sweet kiss of chocolate on the lips from the lingering finish.

Framinghammer is a fantastic Baltic Porter, deservedly mentioned alongside Founders Imperial Stout. The barrel treatment raises it to another level, and while not quite at BCBS level, I can find very little reason for complaint.
