Pint bottle (03/23/15), gentle pour into a nonic. L: well, it's dark in here but it appears to be black as midnight, totally opaque, with a modest creamy head. S: molasses, coffee and smoky booze. T: yum! Brown sugar-burnt caramel - but not sweet - roasty, toasty, malty, boozy goodness. O: full, thick, lip-smacking but not unpleasantly heavy. Nice warm booziness.
Not my usual style, not something I could drink every day, but a nice occasional treat.

3 fingers of head with beautiful lacing and retention. Sleep is powerful, in your face, and screaming with vanilla, bourbon, and oak. Tastes match the smell, the oak really sticks out well in this without being too much. Alcohol is slightly more present than I'd like which is really the only reason I took off half a point for taste. Mouthfeel is where it should be, goes down heavy and sticks to the roof of your mouth and the back of your throat. Amazing beer, I need to try more from jacks Abby.

Highly enjoyable offering from start to finish. Would have been a delicious and warming beer come winter time. However, it's still not so heavy that it can't be enjoyed on a warm summer evening as well. I really liked the subtle but present chocolate flavors. The time Framing Hammer has spent in the barrel has really done justice by smoothing out what rough edges that may have been there and replaced them with nice barrel characters.

Update: 1/6/17
Wow . . . Thanks to a trade with a very generous dude I have another go round with this one. Aromas still have the chocolate and bourbon so I won't try to BS my way through another review. However it does seem to have a hint of pepper in the nose I don't recall detecting on my first offering. This is not a mole/spiced/pepper beer so I dunno what that's about. Taste and feel are much better than I recall. Hmm . . . I personally think Ohio beer drinkers have it better than most but I also think you guys in the N.E. have it pretty good too. Jacks Abbey . . . What a treat !

My score bumps up to a 4.32 from a 4.1 on my second go round.

Very nice Porter. Heavy chocolate notes. This would be a great Christmas beer

500mL bottle from Steve000 (thanks man!). Bottled 3/23/15. Served in a Barrel and Barley teku.

Pours a dark tea black with an initial three finger pillar of khaki head. Once the foam subsides a frail but persistent halo remains, leaving only a couple flakes of lace.

Smells of oak, cocoa, bourbon and heavily creamed coffee. Slightly subdued but nice.

Flavors of chocolate, bourbon, lightly charred oak, caramel mochaccino, brown sugar and a fairly pronounced booze heat. The well rounded base is very apparent, with the barrel treatment adding a boozey sweetness.

Airy, creamy, medium full body with a light, fluffy carbonation. The finish is rich and lush with pure dark chocolate, bourbon and burnt caramel.

Jack's Abby delivers a solid variation of the masterful Framinghammer. The barrelling indeed adds some new layers of flavor but for my tastes I'm left with the impression that Framinghammer is a better Baltic porter than this is a barrel aged beer. Still quite glad to have tried it and would have zero qualms drinking it again at any point.
