Barrel-Aged Framinghammer - CoffeeBarrel-Aged Framinghammer - Coffee
Notes: Big, bold, black and barrel aged. A length conditioning period in bourbon barrels creates a silky smooth chocolatey mouth feel enhanced by the use of oats and brown sugar. Noticeable sweetness gets balanced by roasted malt and hop bitterness. Additional flavors include bourbon, vanilla, and oak.

500ml bottle poured into an unlabeled snifter 6/2/2014.

A- Pours a dark cola brown body with a surprisingly thick two finger mocha head with a good retention time; eventually slipping into a medium collar with some staying power. Not much lacing.

S- Roast malt, tons of milk chocolate, black coffee, cocoa. Very good, a bit light on the coffee but I'm enjoying the surprisingly strong milk chocolate aspect; it even smells a bit spiced up with vanilla or something similar.

F- Chocolate ice cream with vanilla in the background (not even sure where this is coming from), black coffee bitterness, cocoa, milk chocolate, roast malt, even slightly nutty. This is a delicious brew that has a lot going on, though the coffee seems to take a big backseat to the base beer's chocolate notes.

M- Medium bodied, smooth and silky. Good carbonation. It's definitely a hefty sipper with a slight alcohol burn and a bitter black coffee finish.

O- Outstanding baltic porter. It was surprising that it tasted more like chocolate ice cream than it did coffee, which acted in more of a supporting manner. So, it didn't meet initial expectations (since you know, everyone likes to dump tons of coffee in their porters/stouts) but it exceeded overall expectations in that it is a very tasty beer. I'd love to explore more of the offerings in the Framinghammer series.

Edit: apparently this is barrel-aged according to the fine BA who sent this to me. It's now much less surprising that there was an oaky vanilla flavour along with the sweet chocolate ice cream aspects and subtle heat (presumably from the whiskey).

2014 bottle. Not much coffee left, so I added a few teaspoons of french roast. Brought it back to life. Otherwise, great base beer and lovely barrel notes.

500mL bottle from 7Sport (many thanks!). Bottled 3/30/15. Served in a Barrel and Barley teku.

Pours a deep, near black brown like cola or black tea with a tall, three finger pillar of pale tan head. The froth settles to a broken ring around the edges and some scattered wisps across the surface but leaves no lace.

Aromas of coffee, roasty malt, brown sugar, bourbon and some caramel. A nice, welcoming blend.

Soft, rich, flavorful blend of coffee, bourbon, dark roasted malt, cocoa, brown sugar, rolled oats, faint char, hints of dark fruit skin and a mild but present nip of booze. The flavors work together and meld beautifully, drifting in and out of each other deftly. This is smooth, delicious and very easy to drink for a barrel aged brew with double digit abv.

Decadent, creamy, medium full feel with softly bubbly carbonation. I continue to be consistently happy with the body and feel that Jack's Abby achieves with the Framinghammers. Enjoyable notes of coffee, mild bourbon and roasted malt linger in the finish.

Jack's Abby have another outstanding take on Framinghammer with this coffee barrel aged variant. From start to finish this is a top notch beer. Well worth an effort to try.
