On tap at American Harvest in Springfield, the last 1/6 barrel out there I was told. Served in a snifter, review from written notes. Thanks to match1112 for the tip!

Brewery description: "This maple syrup brown ale is aged in Elijah Craig 12 Year bourbon barrels for over six months. The barrel immersion imparts a vanilla aroma and smoothness to the roasted coffee flavor. Notes of molasses, toasted malt and caramel balance with a light hop finish. Enjoy this hand crafted brew in a goblet style glass for the best flavor experience."

Tawny mahogany in the glass, reddish transparent brown in the light. It's creamy tan foam diminishes to a fine collar.

Aromas of vanilla, brown sugar, plum, bourbon.

Big whiskey taste, tannic oak woodiness lingers long into the aftertaste. Hint of dry bakers chocolate and molasses, but the maple syrup from the base beer is all but obliterated. Heat is sustained but fairly mellow, just enough to say hello. Guessing the abv is in the double digits. Pretty light feel, lighter than I remember Abe's being, seems to have thinned out a little. Dry finish lends to it's drinkability, though still a sipper. For RMB's first effort in barrel-aging, this beer is a great success. Looking forward to future batches down the road... Well done guys!

2014: batch 2: Even more boozy and barrel forward, gone are the nuances from the first batch, much more bourbon presence. Not sure if it spent more time in the barrel or if they didn't dump the barrel first. Either way, not much consistency.

a: light brown body, two fingers of tan head. head retention and lacing are moderate.

s: whiskey dominates with light tones of oak, chocolate and maple syrup.

t: whiskey pretty much dominates this one. the base beer is barely there.

m: thinner than most BA beers because the base is not a stout but rather a brown ale. great carbonation level. abv is well hidden, not a harsh alochol burn that many beers have.

o: this is a great first attempt for RMB in their ba program. wish i knew what the abv is. hope the next release is bigger than the 420 bottle release that this was.
