Belgian IPAs are a tough one for me to like. It's not that they're too complex, I think it's that they're confusing... an identity crisis if you will. Too much competition between styles. This one is easier for me to like than others I've had recently.
A: What a beer should look like to be inviting for the drinker to apprach. Orange-ish, ever so slight slight haze. Thin head that dissappeared into thin lacing on the surface.
S: I'll come back to this after it warms a little... Served too cold. Smells like oranges... a little. Musty with the funk you get with Belgians. Earthy and grassy. The Bros said peppermint, I think; I'm not getting that. But there is a hint of that freshness you get with peppermint although it is muddled with Belg. funkiness.
T: Think East- coast IPA meets Belgian. It's an IPA first, with Belgian influences second. This is how it's different than another recent Belg. IPA I've had recently. It seems brewers try to equally represent the two styles giving the identity crisis I referenced earlier. As it warms, some more Belg. qualities come out, but the beer is still approachable. I like this. I couldn't have this as a session ale, but it is good. It is hop forward, with a malty Belgian-y backbone. It is definitely unique.
M: Very good. A tad over carbonated that gives a slight sting or sharpness, but still good. This smoothed out as the beer sat while I wrote this. In fact, it seemed to get a little under carbonated.
O: I'd order this again. I'm going to see if I can get this locally.
