This place had beer that other places in Kansas City did not. I spent the most money here because they had some really awesome Pipeworks, 4 Hands, 2nd Shift, and Defiance beers that the other stores did not and seemed to get them first. The widest selection of beers, maybe not the most in total, but the widest expansive selection. Lots of singles too. I should have left with more but I'm practically broke.
Edit : Oh yeah, $8.99 for Barrel Aged Birthday BOMB. I went apeshit on that deal.

Small, unassuming store at the corner of a slim building. The parking lot is a little tough to get into especially with the perennial winter construction, but the store and staff make up for it. Walking inside, craft beer shoppers are immediately introduced to a shelf with the limited release beers, glassware, and an 8 tap menu for growlers. The staff is helpful and friendly, pointing customers to the back corner of the store that holds more craft beer. About a half dozen coolers hold local and regional 4 and 6 packs with one cooler dedicated to a flat rate mix six selection. Opposite side of the walkway from the coolers is a long dry shelf holding all individual bottlers, mostly large format. Domestics are on the cooler side of the aisle with the opposite side of the shelf holding all imports. Great selection in terms of diversity and quality. Overall, a high quality store, although its exterior may not lead one to believe it.

2017:
Mike's has renovated and added a growler fill station. The beer shelves were cleaner and much more organized. 20+ Jolly Pumpkin varieties was impressive to see. Drafts from Crane, Crooked Stave, and Nebraska for sour stuff, 7 or 8 taps in all. Overall a nice improvement since the last time I was here.

Mike's seemed to be a diamond in the rough, a classic don't judge a book type of mildly sketched out liquor store. From the outside it looked somewhat seedy, though I've seen far worse before. Founders was on the marquee outside next to Seagrams and Busch Light.
Inside it was densely packed and the first aisle turned up quite a lot of beer. Even saw some 2nd Shift here but it was best by last year. The Odell I picked up was 2 months in code so I went with that. Lots of open cases. Some seasonal bombers, quite a bit of Mikkeller, Jolly Pumpkin, and other assorted Shelton brands. Found a Betelgeuze here that I haven't seen elsewhere. A small assortment of branded glassware, and a fair amount of craft in the cooler, though the warm shelves held more varieties.
At the counter the guys were friendly and chatted about the area for a bit. I really appreciated their recommendation to check out Flying Saucer. Overall a diamond in the rough, if anything could use a little organization/streamlining and more craft in the coolers. Good stop in the Waldo area, thanks to Bill for adding this place.

Really love this place. They have an awesome beer selection and friendly/helpful employees if you're not sure what you're looking for. It's a relatively small store, so it's hard to believe the variety of beer (and liquor, and wine) they pack into the place. They also will special order anything they can. I recommend Mike's to everyone I know.

Mike's Wine and Spirits is a quaint little liquor store located in a wedge shaped building on the corner of Wornall and 85th at the very edge of the Waldo neighborhood in south Kansas City. One of its absolute best attributes is the fact its located right down (in the same wedge shaped building) from Swagger. Go have a bite to eat and some good brews, then shimmy down to Mike's for some take home brews.
Mike's is a pretty unassuming liquor store. From the outside you would think it would be pretty typical run of the mill, wine/booze/ and BMC kind of store. Those that assume that are sorely mistaken. While Mike's doesn't have the most extensive selection, they make up for it in quality (and the fact that they normally have it longer then anywhere else in town). They have coolers in the back with about half BMC/half craft then, the first row of isles is dedicated to beer. They carry almost entirely American micros with breweries such as NB, Odells, Founders, Bells, New Holland, Arcadia, Free State, Goose Island, Ska and several others. They carry all the regional locals - Boulevard, Schlafly, Augusta, Crown Valley, Tallgrass and Free State.
Besides the fact that they do carry such a good selection that seems to always be getting better (I thank Swagger for having such a good impact on their selection) they are also willing to try and find you what ever you want and have one of the most helpful staffs I've ever come across. Mike's is definitely the best liquor store in Waldo and maybe even between Royal Liquors at 103rd and Gomer's Midtown.
I've honestly been putting off adding Mike's into the system, because its been my secret beer store for the last 5 years. I'm able to pick up bottles that I might have missed out of a week or two after they sold out at other places across town. I finally decided I'm doing them a disservice by not informing everyone of this unassuming little liquor store.
