Bottled 8/21/15.

Pours an opaque black with a foamy dark khaki head that settles to wisps of film on top of the beer. Small dots of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of dark roasted malt, cocoa powder, lactose, earth, and char aromas. Taste is much the same with cocoa powder, chocolate syrup, lactose, earth, and char flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a good beer that has a nice mix of cocoa and lactose qualities all around.

Pours a thin tan head on a black body.
The aroma is rich chocolate, burnt wood, roasted malt, coffee and milk. Wonderful.
The taste is creamy and chocolate sweet, mild dark chocolate and coffee bitterness. Great balance. Hardly any alcohol heat.
The texture is smooth at first, then a little fizzy.
A really good brew.

Appearance - Pours black with a dark, khaki half-finger head that fizzes away rather quickly and leads to a mostly barren surface. Razor thin line of bubbles along the edge, and leaves a few spots here and there on the side of the glass.

Smell - Sweet. Milk chocolate with a touch of vanilla. Traces of coffee and a faint, woody oak character.

Taste - Chocolate is the main character here, with lesser vanilla notes creeping into the flavor profile. Coffee bitterness is subdued upfront, but adds a little more character in the finish. Faint fruitness as it warms, hinting at berry. Earth and wooden oak comes in a bit more mid-taste and toward the finish, delivering a bit of balance against the sweet punch found at the forefront.

Mouthfeel - Full bodied with low to moderate carbonation. Somewhat syrupy, but in a 'watered-down' sort of way; i.e. it's full but somehow still finishes clean and smooth and entirely quaffable.

Overall - Not as sweet as some milk stouts tend to be, so I'd credit the oak aging with balancing this brew. Still, not quite as 'complex' as I was hoping. Despite it's amazing ability to mask the 9% ABV, the flavor doesn't hit on the depth you'd expect from such a big beer, relying too heavily on the chocolate and vanilla flavors. Then again, it is a milk stout, and one of the better balanced ones I've had at this size, even if it still leans toward the sweeter side. Good job, Mad River.
