Almost perfection, there are no weak links in this beer's chain. Drunk between the Rutland Arms and Dada in Sheffield, this beer's golden orangy glow and complex white lacing are a treat for the eyes. In the mouth its almost perfection with a muscular but supple body which supports the flavour profile of tight juniper and resiny intensity. But its the body's full silky lusciousness which really wins this over for me.

Undoubtedly my favourite UK brewed IPA for the minute. A pile driver in the face of the 'cask or nothing else' movement.

Pours semi-clear amber into a tulip from a can. Head is 3 fingers high, offwhite, sparse, and foamy; it leaves light-moderate sudsy lacing on the glass.

The aroma is of light tropicana; pineapple, mango, clementine, and papaya. It isn't a heady smell, nor does it have a particularly strong pine presence, falling mainly on grass, and aromatic hops. There is a floral character but it lies just below the surface along with a slight vegetative aroma.

The flavour follows on from this hoppy side giving this beer a very aromatic bitter presence. There is the tropical fruit there, particularly ripe mango and some dank pineapple, but it's rather a side show compared to the hop addition. There is plenty of that grassy flavour coming through on the draw with a definate vegetative bitterness and the appearance of the pine that was missing. All in all, only slightly unbalanced.

In the mouth it feels light-medium bodied, slighty resinous, and tangy on the sip from that zippy carbonation. It's light in the front and heavy on the back giving me some mixed signals, but otherwise quite thirst quenching.

This is a good beer, a nice representation of a standard West Coast IPA. For the sake of £1.90 which I paid for this can, I'm certainly not complaining.

Can from Selfridges, Marked down as the shelf date is a few days away. Hazy orange golden, small, bubbly head. Aroma is citrusy and dank. Taste focuses on the dank, some tropical notes, the tart side of juicy. Savory and peppery notes too. Still holding up.

Quite ugly appearance, very, very hazy. A bit of foam, quickly disappearing.
Smell resinous and tropical, a bit boring.
The taste starts malty, the again fruity and tropical hop.
Quite light body, resinous and tropical aftertaste, with a long bitterness, not really interesting.
Beside the appearance, the problem, for us, is the mix between resinous and tropical, quite noring.

330ml bottle bought from The Vineyard, Belfast

Poured an bright amber colour. Slightly off white head poured thick and meringue like then faded slowly to good thick coating... very faint carbonation drifts slowly to surface... some decent patchy lacing...

Aroma - Lots of grassy and peppery hops, lightly toasted bready malts, slightl caramel notes, some fig and orange fruitiness (marmalade hints), some woody traces, light ginger and peppery spiciness, toasted nuts...

Taste - Again peppery and citrus hop bitterness followed by light spicy fruits (bitter oranges, pears), some butterscotch notes, toasted bready malts, light caramel sweetness, light metallic traces, some saltiness...

Feel - Sharp initially then smooths out... light bodied... Extremely drinkable although a bit on the strong side to be sessionable..

Overall - A very good IPA and up with the best of the Americans... recommended

4/6/2012

A: Pale yellow and slightly hazy with a small bubbly white head.

S: Dank and slightly skunky with notes of spicy grapefruit. Light orange and tangerine notes waft from the glass, blending with restrained tropical characteristics. Malt is faint and crackery.

T: Upper moderate bitterness with lots of grapefruit rind and orange pith notes. Light skunky notes with an herbal edge and restrained earth and pine. The finish has a little astringency and alcohol is well hidden. Malt is far in the background.

M: Upper light in body with medium low carbonation.

Overall: A better than expected IPA from across the pond.

12oz. can served in my Spiegelau IPA glass. Pours a dull, burnished orange with a hazy clarity and a rocky, one inch, cream-colored head. Nose is piney and resinous with toasted malts and a trace of ethanol a tinge of something metallic in the background. Taste follows - quite malt forward with an almost cloyingly sweet quality in the flavor profile. Mouthfeel is light-medium in body with an oily texture and an even carbonation. Overall, a decent IPA; however a bit too malty for my preferences.

CAN
Hazy dirty blonde with lumpy clingy parchment froth. 4
Lemon, hop leaf, flower, and pine needle. 4
Thread of flake pastry, then lemon barley water, white pine, a touch of dank, slight pineapple and grapefruit. 4
Halfway to medium, some cling, salty. 4

Amarillo, Centennial, Citra, Columbus, Magnum, Simcoe

Smells all Cascade and look attractively unrefined. The taste, though, is decidedly less complex. The hit on this is that it’s a Punk clone but even that’s being generous - it’s all 2009 Citra grapefruit without the fruit Nelson edge that BrewDog brings. This is not to say it’s not a hop bomb - there’s especially a nice little dirty hop sack edge to all the pure fruit. But it’s nothing you haven’t tasted before. 4
