Bottle

Thanks for waiting for me to open this, Tony!

Clear copper and dull orange with a moderately sized off-white head that leaves irregular lines of lace down the glass.

Sweet aroma of stale, sweet malts, bread crusts, celery and onion, and mild citrus.

The flavor is very vegetal, mimicking a mirepoix: onion, celery, and carrot. The celery and onion components are strongest along with a mild bitterness. Not very good.

Thin to medium mouthfeel with moderate carbonation.

This is a very poor, flawed IPA.

Pours a slightly hazed, orange-golden color, with a huge, fluffy white head.

Smells of mango, ripe orange, papaya and a note of sappy lemon peel, balanced by white bread malts. From its citraic quality, a pleasant, grass defined dankness comes up, enriched by prickly kiwi and water melon shell. The aromas in this are very well nuanced, creating a multi layered, refreshing fruitiness.

Has a medium carbonation, while its mouthfeel isn't overly creamy, due to a crystal characteristic cutting through, distracting from the beers soda pop effervescence, by adding harsher stony minerals. It is not very refreshing too, as the malts create a heavier bodied, almost boozy finish, producing a couterproductive interplay.

Tastes of profound, cakey malts and citraic hops, while a bubbly carbonation grinds over the tongue. Out of the omnipresent malt sweetness slowly develops a slick, part herbal, part fruity bitterness, almost numbing my tongue, as both reach their peak. No harmony between those ingredients is to be found in this, while there is a subtle layer of orange and papaya underneath the omnipresent malt coating. Finishes with a metallic carbonation, painfully transforming into a slick, rusty bitterness, slayed by sweet malts in the end.

While the nose comes well together, the beers actual taste is a huge let down. I don't got no problem with a malt defined ipa, for as long as the hops are used in a genuine way, opening up the beers potential. In this case, almost the opposite is happening, since both major players try to outclass each other, resulting in an unbalanced, sweet mess.

Poured to an oversized wine glass.

A: The body is a little bit hazy having a orange-y and a yellowish coloration. The head is minimal. It's white, has low retention and no lacing.
S: The aroma is mildly blank of tangerines, lemon zest and specially fresh citrus fruits, as if they still have a long time to go ripe.
T: The taste is more resinous than the aroma hints, having a first great impression on resinous and piney profiles. In the back, a very bland hoppy profile that shows no power nor flavour.
M: The body is medium low. Carbonation is low. Alcohol is unnoticeable. Bitterness is medium.
O: Nothing special to note here.

4/6/2012

A: Pale yellow and slightly hazy with a small bubbly white head.

S: Dank and slightly skunky with notes of spicy grapefruit. Light orange and tangerine notes waft from the glass, blending with restrained tropical characteristics. Malt is faint and crackery.

T: Upper moderate bitterness with lots of grapefruit rind and orange pith notes. Light skunky notes with an herbal edge and restrained earth and pine. The finish has a little astringency and alcohol is well hidden. Malt is far in the background.

M: Upper light in body with medium low carbonation.

Overall: A better than expected IPA from across the pond.

12oz. can served in my Spiegelau IPA glass. Pours a dull, burnished orange with a hazy clarity and a rocky, one inch, cream-colored head. Nose is piney and resinous with toasted malts and a trace of ethanol a tinge of something metallic in the background. Taste follows - quite malt forward with an almost cloyingly sweet quality in the flavor profile. Mouthfeel is light-medium in body with an oily texture and an even carbonation. Overall, a decent IPA; however a bit too malty for my preferences.
