Bottle

Thanks for waiting for me to open this, Tony!

Clear amber with a moderately sized light khaki colored head that leaves spots of lacing down the glass.

The aroma is better than the single IPA's, with more of a floral and citrus character. It's still not nearly as strong, pungent, and powerful as similar American brewed versions of the style.

The flavor suffers similarly as the single IPA, with very vegetal flavors, though the onion and celery character isn't nearly as powerful. There's a moderate bitterness and some floral character as well.

Medium bodied with moderate carbonation.

Below average DIPA.

A 330ml bottle with a BB of Sept 2012 (batch 2835). Acquired from my local beer specialist. Ever wondered what it tastes like to be shot out of a cannon?

Poured into a Delirium chalice. A clear coppery-amber hue with low carbonation. Yields a small head of white foam that disappears swiftly. Aroma of fruity aromatic hops and caramel malt. Plentiful notes of citrus, tropical fruit and mild pine, along with a subtle hint of grain.

Tastes of caramel malt with an intense aromatic hop character and a strident bitter finish. Notes of tropical fruit, grapefruit, citrus and pine. A powerful, spicy bitterness upon swallowing. Mouthfeel is smooth and has decent body, but too flat and under-carbonated. Highly astringent; dries the palate. Aftertaste of intensely bitter aromatic hops and caramel malt.

A reasonable DIPA, but falls short of the best. The lack of carbonation is the biggest flaw, as it impacts on the mouthfeel and probably the flavour as well. Plenty of aromatic hops and bitterness, with a decent malt backbone, but doesn't have the depth to make it stand out from the crowd. It's great to see small UK breweries taking on big US styles, but if I had to make one recommendation I'd say this needs to be bottle-conditioned. Worth sampling, but Human Cannonball is not at it's best in bottled form.

330ml bottle bought from MyBreweryTap.com

Poured a nice coppery orange colour. Slightly off white head poured quite big and foamy then faded fairly quickly to wispy covering with thick edging... no carbonation at all... light patchy lacing...

Aroma - Lots of (over) ripe tropical fruits (pineapples, limes, mangoes, grapefruits), strong piney resin, light caramel sweetness, citrus and grassy hops, some rubberiness, floral honey, very perfumed, oaky traces, faint talcum powder / chalky notes, light almond nuttiness, some boozy esters...

Taste - Lots of strong piney and citrusy hop bitterness to the fore, quite herbal - hints of basil and rosemary, very floral and perfumed, some sweet caramel malts come through after the hops, very spicy and juicy fruits (grapefruits, limes, pears, some banana), some chalkiness, faint vegetal traces...

M&D - Fairly smooth with a little oiliness in the background then some sharpness comes through - your mouth will tingle for a while after drinking a bottle of this... medium bodied... dangerously drinkable as the alcohol is well hidden..

Overall - An excellent and very well balanced DIPA - up with the best if the big Americans... definitely recommended...

4/6/2012

A: Reddish orange with good clarity and a small beige head. Nice color.

S: Lightly sweet caramel malt with a touch of breadiness. Lightly tropical, redolent of mango, pineapple, and passion fruit. Grapefruit is pungent and vibrant. Tangerine blends with orange.

T: Bright tangerine and grapefruit notes with balancing malt. There's a lower moderate sweetness with a nice caramel presence. Orange and grapefruit lie beneath the tropical flavors.

M: Medium body with matching carbonation.

Overall: Maltier than a West Coast Double IPA, but good nonetheless. Very nice aroma.

CAN
Rimming off white film over turbid dirty blonde. 4
Peach, herb, lemon zest and tangerine compote. 4
Touch of saltines, pile of citrus oil, some tangerine, nettle oil sting, pine needle, big hit of pineapple and more juicy limeade. 4.5
Lt-med, oily, smooth. 4

Loads of fresh-squeezed citrus, but also lots of oil, too - lots going on. No IBUs, together with the body, puts this in Vermont territory with a lot more success than anything from Northern Monk. No heat at a scary 9.2% is yet another trick, so this had to count as a big winner. Magic Rock’s best + near the top for UK DIPA. 4.25
