A 330ml bottle with a BB of June 2012 (batch 2777), so it's just out of date. Acquired from Trembling Madness in York. I've been sitting on this one since I bought it at the beginning of the year, but given it's strength I hope it will have held up. The lady demands respect....

Poured into a Delirium chalice. Ultra-black; no light penetrates her depths. Yields a decent head of creamy tan foam that lasts for a few minutes before subsiding. Aroma of rich roasted malt with notes of burnt grain, coffee, molasses, liquorice, dried fruit, subtle cocoa and stewed hops. A warming whiff of booze in the background.

Tastes of intense roasted malt with a dry, bitter finish. Notes of dried fruit, coffee, molasses, liquorice, mild cocoa and stewed hops. Indistinct aromatic hops and a hint of booze in the background. An intense, spicy bitterness upon swallowing. Mouthfeel is thick and silky smooth, with good body and a spicy astringency. Very dry. Aftertaste of roasted malt, coffee and hops.

Tasty - an impressive effort. Plenty of character from the dark malt, and the hops add subtle overtones. However, it falls short of greatness; a certain something is lacking. This is hard to pinpoint - an unquantifiable shallowness... Perhaps it boils down to a matter of taste? Nonetheless, well worth sampling if you have the opportunity.

On first hearing of this beer my first thoughts were of Russell Brand...
Smell is the first thing that hits you here. Complex, very roasty, mealy with a damp stone and sweet element. Thick body, molassess, deep, thick and intense and though good it lacks that essential complexity to enable it to approach greatness. Pours just a wall of black with some silkiness with a very thin tan balding head.. Ends with some more thick mouthfeel but overall there's just too much dominant liquorice here.

330ml bottle bought from The Vineyard, Belfast

Poured pitch black with no hint of colour even when held up to the light. Dirty nut brown head poured big thick and foamy then faded slowly to decent covering... some decent lines of lacing...

Aroma - Tons of rich roasted and charred dark chocolate maltiness, sweet bitter coffee, lots of treacle and brown sugar sweetness, some sooty like smokiness, some dark fruits (blackcurrents, dates), some pine notes, toasted (maybe charred ?) fruit loaf, some earthiness, milky notes...

Taste - Sweet dark chocolate, lots of roasted / charred bready malts, light warming alcohol just noticeable, treacle and molasses sweetness, dark spicy fruits (raisins, date, some figs), piney and grassy hop bitterness, traces of piney resin, light liquorice, faint sourness...

Feel - Fairly smooth and creamy with a little sharpness coming through... fairly full bodied... for a 10.5% brew this is dangerously drinkable..

Overall - A supreme Impy stout and as good if not better than any of the big US ones i've tried.. highly recommended
