Notes: Originally a collaboration brew with Kissmeyer Beer. A traditional German style Gose, flavoured with Gooseberry, Sea Buckthorn and Sea Salt. Tart, lightly sour, fruity and refreshing with a defined saltiness an excellent accompaniment to food.

With buckthorn, gooseberry, and salt.

Crisp and refreshing - slight fruit, salt is there, a bit tart. Maybe too light for the complexity. Nice, odd, forgetful. 3.75

With the firm base being of historic German salt beer, its quick wheat and pilsner character is a centrifuge for which earth and tartness swirl about. But with berry and spice additions, complementary flavors and aromas give added complexity and variety.

When the ale pours a bright ruby-pink hue, the eye is take back by its distinctive glowing body. Is zesty froth pops like champagne, pushing tangy aromas of lime, berry, grape and green apple to the nose. Decorated with herbal, floral and delicate pungency; an aura of sea air and flower bouquet lays upon the nose and early palate.

Clean sourness takes hold as an undertow of malt has a wafer-thin sweetness, crispness and short-lived breadiness. But its sour flavor takes the shape of sharp citrus and cider just before the distinctive gooseberry character offers up its sour grape character. Earthy flavors follow with vinous must, wine-soaked cork, and something of the brine and sweat character.

A late charge of straw and damp hay introduces near the finish as the carbonation carries away the taste and allows the piquant acidity of the beer to cleans the palate with utter refreshment and drinkability. Certainly its fruit-forward taste commands the balance, with the gose underlier being in a supporting role, but the ale remains of the finesse type and with seductive sourness that can't be dismissed.

Debated putting this here or making a new beer, had on tap at the Churchkey in DC who listed it as "SALTY KISS: LIME (Brewed w/ Gooseberries, Sea Buckthorn, Rose Hips & Lime)"

Appearance: Hazy yellow with a good cream meringue glass coating white foam.

Smell: Wow. Heavy citric notes, lime peel, ocean breezy salt, hints of pale malt.

Taste: More modest than the nose. The salt goes to counter the heavy citric pucker: but the two vectors don't take you anywhere near center. There is a beer base taste, which is clean pale malt. Total package ends up drinkable yet punchy.

Mouthfeel: Medium body, medium carbonation.

Overall: Maybe the weather is getting to these folk, I think they are trying to build a little sunny tropical island in a bottle. They are doing a nice job of it though, but it does have a slight quinine edge, a tonic, something preserved about it, almost medicinal. Still, a jolly good glass.

The colour is yellow with a ting of orange; the liquid is a bit hazy. The two finger head sinks down to a thin lid, leaving no lacing.

The smell is worty-yeasty with some sweet notes. Hints of salt sea water, green unripe fruits and berries. Minerals and chalk in the background.

The taste is salty and tart with growing sweetness. Green unripe berries, quite a lot of earthy flavours. Light to medium body. The aftertaste got smooth notes of salt, gooseberries and sugar sweetness. The finish is sweet-salt.

The carbonation is light, the many vert small bubbles are long-lived. The liquid is semi-smooth and a bit sticky.

Gooseberries in a Gose is probably a good combination in theory, but this brew got too much earthy off-flavours to be enjoyable.

Draft at Zwanze Day, one of the few highlights... quick review from written notes.

Golden amber color, thin layer of foam on the surface, clusters of larger bubbles, and frothy bits of spotty lacing around the edges of the glass. Clarity was good, and retention was also good.

Aroma had a slight lactic twang, mild wheat graininess and some zestiness.

Taste was firmly tart, crisp with a dry finish. A slight fruitiness from the gooseberries (didn't know what it was at the time), creamy middle from the sea salt, though it wasn't at all salty. Spritzy feel, refreshingly clean and nicely put together. One of the more unique examples of Gose in recent memory.

Poured on tap into a tumbler at Pizza Paradiso Dupont DC. From notes.

Real nice unfiltered flowing lemon body with some real nice peach orange hues and colors mixed in. Real nice creamy whipped bright white head presented with a simple good collar that always stays and has even pinhead bubbles throughout while drinking.

Nose is interesting. A little more chewy malt presence and hinting wheat density than most gose, with spritzy lemon, and large amounts of herbal warmth and tonic water aromas. Does not seem particularly salty, but has some hidden in the background.

Palate has a very soft feel but with dense minerality to it. Chewy backbone with some mild lemon and quninine sprity character. Super easy drinking with a great chewy wheat sensation. Very light bodied and easy drinking. Salinity comes out a little more with a nice rocky quality, but more noticeable in flavor than on the nose.

A real nice solid gose.

look: three finger white head with good retention and lots of lacing, beer is a hazy straw to amber colour, good bit of fast moving carbonation in the beer.

smell: smells good, definitely gooseberry present, has a vinous quality to it, champagne, lemon and orange, green apple, fruity anyway, also a nice tart sour character to it, lightly salty, inviting.

taste: this is delicious, quite biscuity and bready on the opening, then all those fruit flavours come rushing in, lots of gooseberry, lot of green apple, light on the orange and lemon, lots of champagne flavour, nice level of sourness on the finish, only very mild saltyness, yeah this is great.

feel: light bodied, medium carbonation, super smooth, totally crushable, very refreshing, would love to session this on a hot summer’s day.

overall: i seem to think more fondly of this beer than most, but i’m loving this beer, super tasty and interesting, while still being refreshing and light, good stuff.

Pours hazy gold with a large lasting head.
Nose shows soft wheat, lemon, floral notes and a faint spicy phenolic note. Somewhat faint overall.
Soft gentle flavours. Wheat, tart light fruity notes (gooseberry i guess), a soft grainy note and a hint of salt.
Could use more carbonation.
Very easy-drinking and refreshing.

A touch of lemon and light funk in the aroma, with a lot less tartness in flavor than most examples of the style being created today. Lemon is present and softly sour, but it's funk dominant in flavor, musty, with a clean mineral finish.
