Three Monkeys Cafe is located in the Northeast portion of Philadelphia a few feet from the Torresdale train station. The bar goes for an old school taproom vibe with lots of reclaimed woodwork from past establishments including a handsome marble and wood bar from the turn of the century. Decor is mix and match continuing with the monkey theme throughout as well as old b&w photos of the neighborhood and prints of famous works of art. There is a Victorian appointed dinning room behind the main bar area as well as an outside courtyard with its own bar.

Beer menu has about 8 taps indoors with a mix of craft and macro domestics and imports. One handle is always Stoudts Scarlet Lady re branded as the house brew "Horny Monkey", about 3 handles feature rotation seasonal selections from the likes of Sam Adams, Rogue as well as another local brew or two. The bottle list expands on the seasonal theme where 6 or so craft beers rotate in and out depending on the season or holiday, while 8 or so standby's from Yards, Stoudts, Rogue, Sam Adams etc. Macro domestics, macro imports and malt beverages are also represented. The outdoor bar has a small number of handles and bottles available with a seasonal and macro mix.

Food menu is quite expansive and straddles the line between solid bar food and fancier gastropub fare. Service is hit or miss, some people friendly, some surly and some are there just to do their jobs.

Overall, in the area you can't do much better for this in terms of atmosphere and availability of craft beer. The macro's still cater to the neighborhood crowd there to mix and mingle or watch a game, while the craft and seasonl beer and food menu's offer just enough for those of more discriminating tastes.

I think that the previous reviewer did a pretty good describing the place as it is laid out. As noted above, I was there with some friends on a Friday evening and the atmosphere of the place was very good. There was a nice big crowd, a buzz to the place, and I had a good feeling about the place walking in.

I think that night I had a few bottles of Victory Festbier and a burger. The service was good, we had a party of 6 and the waitress was pleasant and performed reasonably well for as busy as the place was that evening, although she was lacking on her beer knowledge. The food was good for what it was and it appeared that the beer selection was also good, focusing on Pennsylvania beers mainly. Overall, it was a pleasant experience and it would have been nice if there were more establishments like this in NE Philly while I was living there. It defiantly would have the experience even better. I hope that the place continues to thrive and that more places like this pop up in the Northeast.
