Had this on tap yesterday for the first time at the Cloverleaf. The Head High is one of my favorite beers that I can regularly find there so I was really excited to see this on tap next to it. Although it has a bit of an identity crisis going on, I was surprised that this wasn't rated higher on here given how smooth it was and how well it went down, without even being a hop bomb. The balance was noticeably present here and since the alcohol wasn't that strong, the flavors came through quite nicely as well!
The pour was great as this had a ruddy brown hue to it with a subtle sheen when held up to the light. Not a big head but what was present was tan and sturdy, which remained as near-perfect lacing. Never before did I see the rings left behind in the glass "date" the beer, as one level faded into the other and resembled tree rings that were able to show where each previous sip started from. Lots of bread and caramel in the nose and this full toasted smell continued in the taste, along with moderate citrus and pine notes. The balance was here with a rich, leathery undertone and a subtle carbonation that kept this from getting too heavy. It was hard to pick out the hops and the actual citrus notes but there are more than enough IPA's out there that do that already, so why need another one?
While not a session beer, it would be easy to kick a few of these back in a sitting. Another reviewer on here said that was anonymous and to some extent, he's right. Nothing about this stood out in particular but from start to finish, this was quite enjoyable and fun without feeling like the second coming of the Head High. Only a subtle burn in the aftertaste served as reminder of what this beer was and that worked for me! Good stuff that deserves more than a limited run of availability.
