Sometimes mistakes are made in a busy brewery. A few weeks ago we were brewing a fresh batch of First Reef, when a miscommunication between cellar shifts resulted in this batch getting its full dry-hop by both shifts. The resulting beer tasted great, but with the extra heavy dose of dry-hops it didn’t taste like First Reef, so we decided to call this batch by a new name. Reef? There’s a Reef? is still a 7.0% IPA brewed with a Pilsner base and small amount of honey malt, oats, and wheat. We still used a small amount of Simcoe in the kettle, but we ended up dry-hopping it at a rate of almost 10lbs per barrel with a blend of Citra, Galaxy, Amarillo and Cascade.

Pouring from a 16 oz. can into a Willi Becher style glass, this beer pours out a light and bright orange and completely hazy. It forms a thin, white crown.
It smells of tropical and citrus notes. A little bit of sharp, dank hop bite.
The taste comes in with sharp, ripe fruit. Ripe pineapple.
The feel is what could’ve been toned back with sharpness. Dry, chalkiness.
Overall, this isn’t a bad beer. I really like the ripe fruit notes showing. But think it could’ve used some balance and toned back the sharpness of such.

I don't know much about coral or reefs but I do know that they can seem inviting up front while having a lot of sharp edges to them. That was the case with this beer as it was quite dank and turbid from the get-go, because of the hops that were in this and the way this was brewed. It tasted tropical, earthy, and very dank as it was almost an assault on my tongue, with the end result being a complex beer that needed to be sipped slowly...
Of course, this had a turbid gold with some light seeping in around the edges. The head was sufficient and the lacing left behind was mostly in the form of a thick and deep ring near the top of my pint glass. Oats, white cheese, wheat, and melon were plentiful in the subdued nose. Tons of Pilsner Malt, Wheat, and feet in the taste as this felt very naturalistic and a bit raw. White cheddar and an underlying earthiness from the Amarillo and Cascade gave it a West Coast feel as this became easier to enjoy as I worked my way through it.
Not a lot of booze here and the carbonation was light, which allowed all of the hops and ingredients to play out as this warmed up. Can't say that I've ever had an IPA like this as the overt bitterness and burn took a back seat to everything else that was going on here. Being dry-hopped twice gave this an interesting profile that let this shine, in spite of it's complexity. Canned on 4/23/19, this was worth a go once for someone willing to take the time to savor this unique brew!

Look: Opaque and murky deep straw/gold color. A bone white, one finger head upon pouring quickly disappears. No visible carbonation. Nothing is visible through this beer.
Smell: Orange vitamin, crushed sweet tart candy, lemon and orange citrus, pineapple, pine, grassy. The nose is by far the best part of this beer.
Taste: There’s not all that much to speak of here. Faint hints of pine, some generic citrus, and cattiness. A bit chalky/vitamin like. Which usually doesn’t really bother me but this quality seems to really shine through here due to the lack of much else. There is some bitterness on the finish.
Feel: Too dry with some hop burn, with a medium bitter finish.
Overall: I’m thinking that instead of naming this something other than First Reef because they accidentally dry hopped it twice for a final rate of about 10lbs per barrel, they should’ve just poured it down the drain like I did. It is lacking in flavor and never really came together for me.
