My final EBF sample. I remember having a variant of this with vanilla added or something of the like. Now it's on to the base. It pours thick, pen-ink black with a thin ring of dark brown froth. Aroma is huge. Bourbon, fudge, espresso, alcohol, and vanilla. All the necessary aromas of a great Imperial Stout and set to a gaudy level of intensity. The flavor envelops over the tongue like some of the best. Like NyQuil on the palate. Liquid fudge, high-end espresso beans, cola, just a bit of anise, French vanilla and a big bourbon underbelly. Body is incredible. I sampled many beers during this festival; most of them being Imperial Stouts from some of the best breweries. This one was right in the running for one of the best beers I tried. I don't remember liking the vanilla version as much. The body is impeccable. Great brew.

A beast thanks to billquirk (reddit), shared with rudzud and others, 2014 vintage aged in 4 Roses.

Pitch black thick syrupy motor oil, long legs, little dark fizzy head fades quickly.

Nose is exploding with dark fudgey chocolate, cocoa and bitter choc, then tons of bourbon, juicy barrel juice bourbon, vanilla barrel, toasted oak, little fusel booze, vanilla candies, fudgey caramel and fluffy nougat candy bar.

Taste brings tons of fudgey cocoa, dark chocolate, lush creamy choc, fluffy nougat and chocolate candy bar filling, caramel candy, etc. Nice bourbon, barrel juice and bourbon, great vanilla barrel, toasted oak, big fudgey choc fluffy nougat. Delicious. Finish is a little sticky, nice dark chocolate and cocoa, more bourbon lingering, caramel, fluffy nougat, vanilla barrel lingering, and hint of warming booze.

Mouth is full rich bod, creamy fluffy, nice carb, hidden booze.

Overall amazing, so friggen delicious.

Got this one from dbawd a while back. Cheers for the brews man!

From a 750 into a snifter
Vintage: 2015
Black Wax

APPEARANCE: Pours out thick, syrupy black and yields a 2+ finger, medium looking, creamy, slightly crackly dark tan head with very good retention. Jet black body with no real carbonation evident. Head slowly fades to a full, thick cap. Slight faint wisp and ring remain leaving some decent lacing on the glass. Good looking, menacing brew.

SMELL: Big bourbon nose right off the bat, but there’s lots going on in there. Bourbon, oak, lots of dark, pure chocolate, sweet vanilla cream aromas, brown sugar and some molasses. Notes of toffee, coconut and chocolate soaked cherries are in there as well. Bold and very decadent.

TASTE: Lots of oak and bourbon up front with chocolate fudge, vanilla and sweet cream as well. Sweet and barrel heavy initially, with a touch of alcohol too. More barrel and sweet toffee and vanilla flavor at the swallow with a bold and lingering finish of bourbon, vanilla-oak flavor, sweet cream, caramel fudge, some coconut, dark, pure chocolate, molasses, and even a hint of maple in there as well. Lots of decadent sweet flavor with a nice bourbon presence as well. Not much bitterness here but it certainly doesn’t need it.

PALATE: Medium-fuller body with medium carbonation. Semi-creamy on the palate with enough weight for sure, goes down smooth with a light scratch at the swallow and finishes quite sticky. A bit of an alcohol burn lingers. A heavier and thicker feel for sure, which is nice.

OVERALL: Well, this is actually pretty good. A lot of these overly hyped imperial stouts don’t live up to their billing, but this one definitely does. A real menacing look, which I love, a decadent nose and lots of great and well-integrated barrel and base beer characteristics in this one. The feel is great for the style as well. Well worth trying out if you get the chance, and much better than the Three Brother base Resolute I just had a couple weeks back. Good beer that was very enjoyable. Thanks again dbwad!
