Odell Brewing Company
Colorado, United States

Style: Scotch Ale / Wee Heavy

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 9.60%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
In 1989 we opened our doors with our flagship, 90 Shilling. Still a favorite today, we’re celebrating our Silver Anniversary with a double version of the recipe that started it all. We’re a little bigger now, and 180 Shilling is too, with a hearty roasted malt base balanced by subtle earthy hops and aged on oak to create notes of toffee, plum, vanilla and dried cherry. Thanks for 25 years of beers, and here’s to many more. Cheers!

Served in a snifter from the 750mL bottle.

I've got to stop and admire the head on this beer. It's a beautifully fluffy, chewy, cream-colored masterpiece. Beneath is a dark, black body with robust, aggressive carbonation. 4.25

Interestingly, the nose throws me for a loop. It's got some grape or raisin, toasted coconut and caramel. Everything seems subtle and light. 4

Taste-wise, the aromas become more pronounced and make a bit more sense, as this beer is thick and layered. Heavy caramel, dark fruit, almost grape-like at first, before transitioning to a yeasty, floral and slightly wine-like. 4

The feel on this beer is an impressive blend of creamy thickness and bubbly effervescence. There are some Belgian qualities to this. In general, it's smooth and enjoyable. 4.25

This is only gonna get better with age. Buy a couple to age.

Poured into a tulip, the beer is a lovely ruby-dark brown with a bubbly, tan head.
The aroma is like beer candy. Toffee, sweet biscuit, spice, vanilla and some underlying dark fruit.
The taste is big and layered. I get the sweetness first, including caramel and raisin the some booziness and a hint of plum with a finishing flourish of vanilla and oak and a pleasant warmth.
Mouthfeel is medium-plus and almost creamy.
Overall, simply outstanding. Wish I had another.

Pulling off the cork releases spicy malt and alcohol joined by vanilla notes. Pours brilliant chestnut under a finely bubbled frothy light tan tinted white foam cap that provides god lace. A big rich spicy malt palate joined by gig dark sugar flavors is seasoned by light alcohol, light caramel and a hint of butterscotch in the background. A balancing alcohol and hop bitterness arise on the finish. Very creamy and chewy with medium carbonation and a slight warming on the finish. Comes across like a wee heavy on steroids that is leaning towards a barley wine.

Pours a very dark amber color with a good tan one finger head. Aroma is a bit of malty sweetness, woody characters and some piney hops. Taste is heavy dark malt, vanilla, toffee and some resiny bitterness. Mouthfeel is pretty thick and chewy, very nice. Overall, quite nice, a pretty good Barleywine - I'd buy this one again.

750 ml bottle served slightly chilled into a goblet.

180 Shilling, side by side with it's little brother, is a noticeably darker shade of the same hue. The head is thick and has great retention.

Aroma is has similar malty sweetness but with the addition of vanilla character from the oak aging. It's also stronger and a little boozy as you might expect given the 9.6% ABV.

Flavor is much more bold, almost like a concentrated version of 90 Shilling. There is still the Scottish ale sweetness with hints of tobacco and leather. Then there is the roasted malt and dark caramel. The hops are more forward too but not so much that they dominate. Rather just enough to balance. The alcohol is definitely there but it's not overwhelming. It would be interesting to see how it ages. I suspect it would quite well.

Mouthfeel is full bodied and nicely carbonated. Balanced but strong and not at all lacking in depth.

Overall a very interesting and enjoyable imperial version of what has become a classic American version of the style.

Poured into a snifter.
A - Pours very dark with an enormous, thick pillowy head that lasts forever.
S - Aroma is mild, caramel and malty.
T - Taste follows the nose. Caramel and toffee notes dominate. A bit of alcohol on the finish.
O - I bought this on a whim over a year ago, wasn't sure what I was getting. I really enjoyed this beer and would like to have more.

Pours an effervescent orange/amber with a finger of cream colored head. Great head retention & very nice lacing

S: Plums, leafy hops, some boozey notes (delicate)

T: Plums, cherry notes, oaky notes, black currants & even a little blackberry & a little bit of woody hops up front. Leafy hops ( cherry pipe tobacco ) & a little bit of tangerine as this warms, some jammy notes as well. Finishes warming with cherry, a little oakyness & a bit of toffee & a little bit of smokeyness as well, nice figgy notes as well

MF: Medium bodied/thick, moderate carbonation, warming, skews fruitty

Drinks alright, seems more like an English Barleywine, I do think this will age pretty nicely unless you're looking for hops
