Brombeere Blackberry GoseBrombeere Blackberry Gose
Notes: We love blackberries as much as the next bear. So we wondered: what if we used the sweetness of those berries to compliment the saltiness of a German-style sour wheat beer? Our blackberry gose is a balance of tangy and sweet, and as crisp as some of our favorite late summer evenings.

12 oz. bottle poured into a willibecher.

A- Mix of colors. Rich, deep berry, with nice amber hues. Head is white, extinguishes quickly and doesn't leave any lacing.

S- Classic gose aroma with some tartness, lacto tang, a slight bit of grain, salinity, and all encompassed by some sweet berry.

T- Great tang, and noticeable grain character. Berry flavor finishes sweet and tart.

M- Body is light and tang. Sweetness obviously throughout. Finishes tangy-sweet with a mild dryness.

O- Really nice example of a gose, even with the fruit. The style isn't muddled by the addition of fruit, which oftentimes happens.

Appearance – Clear deep yellow body with a one and a half finger head that stuck around a while.

Aroma – Sour, acidic, blackberries, a little prickly.

Taste – Berries, fruity, slightly sour, almost like a wheat beer.

Mouthfeel – Smooth and very easy drinking. Not too puckering.

Overall – If you’re in the mood for a thirst-quenching sour, this one is very good.

Poured from a 12oz can into glass. Stamped canned on date is '08/11/17 05:27'.
Pale gold/orange colored body. Hard pour results in half finger, white head. Spots of lacing mostly slide back into body.
Sweet berry, slightly tart lemon aroma.
Slightly tart lemon, sweet berry taste, with accompanying salt. Slight spice addition.
Appropriate thin to medium mouth feel.
A summer quencher, tasty but not memorable.

This beer poured from a 12 oz can comes out bright reddish look to it.There is barely any head and no lacing. I remember getting it on bottle last year and the color was a bit more burnt orange. Smell is of blackberries.Taste is still tart like I remember just not as sour as I remember from years past. Very easy to drink beer. Clean finish to the beer . Odell I love your beers but it seems like you tweeked this beer a bit. Still a great beer to relax a summer night to!!

This one is not as sharply tart as I was hoping it would be. After skipping it last year, I tried it again in 2017 hoping it would pop more than I remembered. Sadly, it does not. Light blackberry and not nearly enough saltiness, this one just doesn't stack up to the other fruity gose-style beers out there. And with such a steep price point, I would have to say this one is a definite pass. Shame, too, as Odell's 750ml sour game kills it.

This beer pours a clear pale brown-lavender with an average head. The aroma features sour lemon and tart blackberry. The flavor has a low level of sourness, almost yogurt like sour quality, interspersed with a pleasant blackberry flavor and a hint of malt. The mouthfeel is light with fairly small carbonation. Overall this is a delicate and pleasant sour, but it is neither light enough to be a gulper, not complex enough to be a sipper. Good but not great.

12 oz can. Pours clear pinkish gold with a big fizzy white head that goes to a thin film that leaves some lacing.

The aroma is sweet tart blackberry with a touch of salt and seltzer.

The flavor is sweet tart acidic blackberry with a little salt in the finish. The mouthfeel is medium bodied and watery.

Overall, a decent fruity gose.

Poured from a can with a best by date of 8/11/17; into a Wiezen glass.
Appearance- a mixture of peach, pink and purple; only a few streams of carbonation and no head. Lacing is predictably nonexistent.
Smell - limes and blackberries.
Taste - tangy, sour key lime and sweet blackberry.
Feel - light, tart, sweet and refreshing.
Overall - I could see this being a hit at a summer BBQ or at the pool, but when my wife likes a beer, chances are it isn't going to be on my must have list!

Got in a trade with The-Adjunct-Hippie. 12 ounce bottle into tulip glass, bottled on 11/10/2016. Pours slightly hazy golden amber, light pinkish/orange color with a 1 finger fairly dense light pink head with good retention, that reduces to a thin spotty lace cap that lingers. Light spotty lacing clings on the glass, with a light amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of tart/tangy blackberry, lemon, pear, green apple, white grape, coriander, sea salt, wheat, cracker, herbal, grass, light lacto funk, and yeast earthiness. Very nice aromas with good balance and complexity of fruity/earthy yeast, blackberries, spice, and light-moderate pale malt notes; with great strength. Taste of tart/tangy blackberry, lemon, pear, green apple, white grape, coriander, sea salt, wheat, cracker, herbal, grass, light lacto funk, and yeast earthiness. Light-moderate fruity/lactic tartness and light bitter/spiciness on the finish; with lingering notes of blackberry, lemon, pear, green apple, white grape, coriander, sea salt, wheat, cracker, herbal, grass, light lacto funk, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Very nice complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/earthy yeast, blackberries, spice, and light-moderate pale malt flavors; with a great malt/tartness balance, and zero puckering flavors after the finish. Moderate dryness from tartness and carbonation, increasing through the glass. Medium-high carbonation and light-medium body; with a very smooth, crisp, and moderately grainy/saline/acidic balanced mouthfeel that is great. Zero warming alcohol as expected of 4.8%. Overall this is a very nice fruited gose style. All around nice complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/earthy yeast, blackberries, spice, and light-moderate pale malt flavors; very smooth, crisp, and refreshing to drink; thanks to the balanced acidity. Not as lactic/acidic as I was expecting; but it’s really well balanced with plenty of blackberry flavors and well rounded classic style characteristics. A very enjoyable offering.

A pale gold beer with a tinge of blackberry purple to it. Small head fades quickly in this lightly carbonated beer. Wheaties, coriander and blackberry aromas rise from the glass. The flavor is only slightly sour with a lot of fresh blackberry flavor and a finish of sweetness and a tiny bit of saltiness. The blackberry flavor is the star of the beer. I wish it were just a little more sour and a little more salty but a good beer.

Clear yellow and no froth at all. Smells of pear, orange and white grape. A swig reveals green apple Jolly Rogers, a slight tartness and faint berry. A pinch of salt is noticed later on (or maybe that is the power of suggestion)? Light and somewhat flavorful, but this one is never going to upset and apple cart.

Pours a clear light rose to light Amber and a campaign like bubbliness. Light to no foam and what is there disappears quickly. Very tart on the nose. Taste of tart berries, dry grasses and straw. Light mouthfeel that finishes tart and dry.

Pours a clear incredible effervescent rose color. Almost looks like bubbling rose. Fizzy white head dissipates almost instantly leaving no residual head or lacing.

Smell has notes of salt, tartness a slight berry aroma. Very dry on the nose.

Taste is slightly tart, both from the style, and then from the hint of berry. The berry flavor could stand to be much more pronounced without detracting from the beer. Very strong straw flavor in the beer. Slightly salty initially moving to a saltier finish. The berry is certainly a non traditional take on the style. The base beer is solid. Its somehow kind of sweet and the dryness is mild. Would love to see some more dryness on the finish. Overall its also not very sour - much more in line with a berliner weisse rather than a gose.

Feel is light, very crisp, pretty carbonated. Slightly tart, tartness mellows all to quickly.

Overall its a fine gose, kind of misses the mark for the style, but its solid. Could use a more pronounced berry flavor with a stronger tart and sourness.

Homerun! Bromberre is one I got to experience for the first time at GABF, right after my first two glasses of Pliny the Elder as my first beers after getting off the plane in Denver.

I am drinking it again now as 2 bottles in one larger glass. The beer pours a purple tinted gold that has a white head that is short lived and settles leaving almost no lacing down the glass. It is moderately opaque and is a rich, beautiful color. Similar to red gold on expensive jewelry.

The nose is crisp dry malts with some floral notes and the sharpness of pre-ripened blackberry. You expect a tartness from this one based on the nose. There are also hints of grass, bread, pine, and camphor.

The taste is luxurious and rich with a tartness that is not sour but rich. The blackberry and saltiness combine with a dry malt to bathe the palate in an orgasmic beer experience. The flavors are a salty, fruity and malty beergasm. There are notes of dried blackberries, hops, malt, pine, myrrh, rosemary and bitter greens. Amazing experience on the palate.

The mouthfeel is crisp and coats the palate allowing the flavors to evolve over time.

Overall this is the best damned Gose I ever tried and it is utterly amazing. I love it and could drink it every day.

Pours a light Amber color with no head retention. Soda like carbonation with a thin mouthfeel.

Aroma is very neutral. A bit of wet hay, some very light berry-like qualities, with a bit of a musky-ness.

Taste has some blueberry and blackberry notes. Pretty sweet with malt and honey notes. A very small touch of citrus. A kiss of tartness and salt on the finish.

Overall, the beer is pretty boring and nothing really stands out. I see it pairing well with chicken enchiladas in a chile verde sauce. It gets 70/100.

Transparent lightly pink tinged body. White head doesn't stick around for much time at all.
Blackberry sits atop everything with some wheat and salt following. Little salty and ends dry.
Light but carbonation could be higher.

Poured from a 12oz. bottle.

A: Pours a light pinkish gold color with one finger of bubbly white head. Head dissipates quickly and leaves no lacing. Looks sort of like wine, rather dull appearance.

S: Fairly funky tart aromas. You get lots of blackberry, as well as some lemon, wheat, subtle spice, and some distinct saltiness.

T: Pleasant subtle flavors of blackberry dominate throughout. You also get some notes of wheat, lemon zest, sea salt, and some sour tart.

M: Light bodied, with a moderate amount of carbonation. Tart and smooth but not much to it.

O: I really like most of Odell's brews and enjoy this one as well, however it is slightly disappointing. I don't think it is necessarily true to style as it is much different then typical a German Gose. However it is a pleasant and easy drinking brew, it would be even better if it had a little more balance and upped the impact of the blackberries a bit. Overall a nice slightly tart fruity wheat ale that is worth giving a try especially if you like lighter styles and are a fan of blackberries.

12oz bottle. 10/21/15 bottle date. Appearance: Light golden and clear with a blue edge to it. Moderate white foam cap that dissipated quickly. Aroma: Noticeable lactic acid, with a bit of berry. Taste: Light wheat malt, moderate lactic acid tartness, and low saltiness. Berry flavors start to show up on the swallow. Mouthfeel: Light body and low carbonation. Finish: Tart berry flavors arrive on the swallow and linger after. Accentuated by the lactic tartness. Overall: Good but not great version of the style. Very low on the saltiness and coriander character. Lactic acid component is the dominant piece of this beer, but lower in intensity than the AV version. Berry flavor and tartness is a nice complement to the lactic tartness.

Look- Finger width white fizzy head. Quickly disappeared leaving no lacing. Hazy pale rusty amber due to the blackberry addition.

Smell- Minimal blackberry in the nose. Mild spice and fruit esters come through in the background.

Taste- Blackberry stands out a little more in the taste. Again, spice is to a minimum but more detectable. Tart with semi sweet balance from the fruit. Salt and sour are almost non existent.

Mouthfeel- Carbonation seems flat. Light bodied. Minimal wheat contribution making it feel watery. Dry on the finish.

Overall- It's easily drinkable, especially on a summer day. If anything, it is worth trying a single bottle.

Thanks to protonw07 for sending this one over as an extra

A: Pours a clear golden color with ruby hues. Small white head quickly dissipates leaving essentially zero lacing. 3.75

S: Tart, salty, some wheat characters, very subtle berry notes. Nice but flavors as a whole are pretty mild. 3.75

T: More berry than in the aroma. Not as tart or salty as I like in a Gose. Doesn’t really taste like a Gose at all really. Some mild bitterness. Decent. 3.25

M/D: Medium body, carbonation very low almost flat, drinkability is ok. 3.

O: I am a fan of Odell and a fan of Gose’s but this one was not a hit for me. 3.25

12oz brown bottle, sample from the brewery.

Pale amber with a slight rose highlight, bubbly with minimal lacing. Mild berry, mild funk, mild breadiness in the nose and on the palate. Wish the blackberry flavor was pronounced but it is still noticeable. Wheaty and slightly sour, Gose? Don't really see it but this is American brewing, taking styles and twisting them. Fun none the less.

On tap at Old Mill in Austin, MN.
I liked this. Nice berry color of purplish blue. Soft white head left interesting swirls on the top of the drink. A bit thin looking and feeling, but it is a low alc. beer. The fruit from the blackberry mixed nicely with the sour yeast flavors blending softly and nicely. No intensity or artificial quality to the fruit flavors.
A nice semi-refreshing lightly soured lightly fruity drink.
I did not pick up the salt others had noted. Maybe the age had taken some of that away.

Disclaimer: my first experience with the style though I read up on it. Overall I think this would be a good session beer on a hot day at the beach with burgers and hot dogs.
Look: No head, just a thin fizz; hazy berry color
Smell: very faint berry.
Taste: Like seltzer water with faint alcohol burn and some light berry and salt.
Feel: Watery with no mouth coating
Overall: This style may not be for me, but I don't think this is a good representation of the style. You have to search hard for the salt and the blackberry makes this taste more like kool-aid than beer.Sorry O'Dell, love you, but not this particular beer.

A lightly pinkish hued amber beer, with a fizzy, soda-like head. Extremely lively, like seltzer. Aroma is tart; cranberries, mild wheat-like notes, a touch of saltiness per the style. Tastes start out with more smooth wheat-like characteristics, then a flash of tartness from the berries, finishes mild with a very slight tartness and a very small hint of salt. Mouthfeel is appropriately light and fizzy, a bit too lively for my tastes and for a early autumn day.

Overall, I don't like it. There's nothing about it that is expressly unpleasant, it;s just the style and the fruitiness I'm not a fan of. I'm sure fruit lovers will enjoy it, for sure. It's not overpoweringly fruity or sweet, not sour or aggressively tart. For what it is, it's not bad. It's that I don't like what it is, a fruity gose beer. Not up my alley.
