Very Good
5 Barrel Pale Ale5 Barrel Pale Ale
Notes: The distinctive hop character of our 5 Barrel Pale Ale is due to the extraction of essential oils from select hops. We treat 5 Barrel Pale Ale to an infusion of fresh whole hop flowers in the Hop Back and the Fermentor, as well as four hop additions during the kettle boil. We like how this gives the beer a fresh, lively flavor and aroma.

A very solid Pale Ale that would suit me fine for day long drinking. Such balance, such purity, such flavor. If elegance and quality are your thing, then your thing is this beer.

A standard Pale Ale look of medium copper color carries moderate haze, bleach white cottony foam that covers the glass and laces very well. Evidence of the use of hops are all over this beer.

Balanced aromas of citrus and pine bounce against caramel malts and sweet bread notes. Medium esters seem to give a boost to the citrusy notes while giving a sweeter impression to the malts.

Flavors are equally as balanced and in the same way as in the nose. Very consistent flavors give a sweeter taste up front with caramel and malt. Hop flavor ushers in the balance which eventually finish the beer off in a dry and well-attenuated way.

Medium body up front quickly fades into a drier, warming sensation that stradles the minty side. Looks like Sierra Nevada's Pale Ale has company.

Thanks Waltonc!

We sampled this one at the Odell Taproom with some friends, a few Saturdays ago. Poured a nice copper-amber color, with some decent cloudy white foam on top. Aromas of caramel, light brown sugar and some floral hops. On the palate, light bodied, with caramel, biscuit and a hint of hops.

A: Clear, honey color. Pours with a rocky two inch head that dissipated a bit then held. Ample lacing all the way down.

S: Not a big aroma. Citrus and some grassy hops. Hint of caramel malt.

T: Like aroma, citrus fruit flavors and earth/grass malts; moderate bitter finish.

M: Medium body nicely blanaces with moderate carbonation

D: Smell not all that impressive, but tastes great. Drinkable too.

Two finger creamy head with good retention and excellent lacing. Orange colour body.
Citrus and pine smells which are a bit lighter for this style of beer.
hops are mild in this ipa but the pine and earthy flavour balances this ipaout very well. Smooth finish with very little bitirness and no alcohol presence.
overall this is well balanced and is one i will consider for when i am craving something citrusy

12 oz. bottle poured into a pint glass.

Pours a clear copper, lively, with one finger of lightly creamy off-white head that leaves a thin bit of lacing.

Aromas of caramel malt and earthy, grassy hops on the nose. Light hop bitterness on the palate without much hop flavor. Really, this doesn't taste like much of anything; I'm really having a hard time picking out specific flavors. Light bodied with good carbonation, and a drying finish. There's a subtle nuttiness on the finish, with a mild lingering bitterness, though the overall length is short.

I'm disappointed on the whole--O'Dell makes some fantastic beers, but this just isn't up to par. There's nothing particularly wrong with it, but it lacks anything to make me want to drink it again.

A - Nice light pour. Head is slight off-white. Brew is nice clean crisp orange with some yellow and amber.

S - Lots of Cascade and Amarillo hops. Nice fruity scent.

T - Very bland for a Pale... I would expect more aggression from Odell. Nice, but not potent.

M - Way too carbonated!!!! Light body with some depth missing.

O - A nice relaxing brew. Great for a hot summer day. Not one to seek, but a must try if you're able to find.

Appearance - Pours a solid rusty brown color, with a white head. Sticks around at the top mostly.

Smell - This is how I like a beer to smell. You smell the hops and a half second after, the malt. Almost perfect balance on the nose.

Taste - Again the hops hit you first, but then you get the malt almost right away. I also taste a little brown sugar here as well as possibly some corn taste.

Mouthfeel - Kinda standard here. Not too heavy, but maybe a touch so for a pale. First sip you get a lot of carbonation, but it fades well.

Drinkability - I keep coming back to this one. Its very well balanced, and I can drink it all night long without it getting old.

Poured from a 12 oz bottle with best by date of 6/20/12, into Unibroue tulip.

Appearance: Pours a pale copper color, with about two fingers of tight white head, that leaves behind some very nice lacing.

Smell: Malt breadiness up front, with some slight floral hop notes in the background.

Taste: Nice piney, and flowery hop notes up front, with a nice bready malt taste in the middle and then finishes off dry with a nice touch of hop bitterness.

Mouthfeel: A very nice crisp medium to light body on this one.

Overall: Pretty descent pale ale, though I feel it leans more towards an American PA as opposed to a British one. The hops just seem a bit to overpowering to be a British PA IMO.
