Style: English Pale Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 5.20%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
The distinctive hop character of our 5 Barrel Pale Ale is due to the extraction of essential oils from select hops. We treat 5 Barrel Pale Ale to an infusion of fresh whole hop flowers in the Hop Back and the Fermentor, as well as four hop additions during the kettle boil. We like how this gives the beer a fresh, lively flavor and aroma.

A nostalgic aroma that screams "beer!" Nothing more and nothing less. Floral and lemony hops and a bit o' malt. The taste reminds of of the first taste of craft beer I ever had: a sip of Redhook ESB on my daddy's knee many years ago. Sweet malts, a solid bitter background, floral hops, and a sweet/bitter finish. An underrated pale ale that sadly gets overlooked in Odell's all-star year round lineup. More of these will be in my future whenever I get tired of the barrel-aged this and sour that and need something that reminds me how good a simple beer can be.

12 oz. bottle poured into willibecher.

A- Golden blonde. A little hazy. Off white head holds well at about one finger, and lacing is great.

S- Floral, citrus, and a light toasty backbone.

T- Great balance. Sweet citrus, toasty malt, and a piney bite.

M- Medium light body. Pretty clean finish with dull citrus. Carbonation is just faintly snappy.

O- Really well done. This one is well balanced and easy to drink. Very solid pale ale.

12 oz bottle poured into a pint glass. 1 and a half finger soapy head sits on top of a orange-Amber beer. Very floral aroma, with a little bit of grass and sweet malts. Initial taste is grassy, wildflowers, followed buy a good malt backing. Finishes with sweet, with a little bit of dry bitters, very clean. It's definitely a drinkable beer, obviously a little on the lighter side but not watery by any means. Overall it's a solid Pale Ale. I like what they did with the hops. It seems that a lot more PAs are going more hop forward and pushing towards the IPA style which I do enjoy. This is more of a traditional Pale Ale. Good floral taste and smell, easy to drink, not too light. Didn't blow me away, but I think I would drink it again. 84/100

L: Light copper

S: Lots of caramel notes and light floral hops

T: Light floral hop presence and tasty caramel malt up front, finishes with a lot of hop floral notes and some hop bitterness, slightly sticky in the mouth. Residual sweetness like maple syrup.

F: A full bodied pale ale, light on the palate

Pours an amber color with three fingers sudsy foam consisting of tightly packed tiny bubbles. Settles to half a finger thick cap with spots of lacing.
Aroma is subtle floral hops and sweet malt, but not much more.
Taste is sweet up front with floral and fruit (juicy peach mostly) following. No bitterness.

Poured from a 12 ounce bottle into a Shaker pint glass, "best by" date 3-24-16.

APPEARANCE: pours a cloudy, sediment filled, copper color with one-finger off-white head that slowly dissipated until a thin, unbroken layer of small bubbles remained, medium carbonation.

SMELL: bread, caramel, faint flowers, not much going on here.

TASTE: the taste follows the nose, initially sweet caramel and bread and then an understated hop profile.

PALATE: medium body and carbonation.

OVERALL: this is a great looking beer but otherwise underwhelming, it's not a bad beer, it just does not stand out enough to buy again as there are better options available.

L: Copper gold with a slight haze under a 2” cream colored foam cap that recedes moderately fast.

S: Biscuit, stone fruit, melon, some earthiness.

T: Very light peach, biscuit to bread crumb, very light sweetness, some drying on the finish. The malt flavors are medium to medium high, the fruit flavors are medium to medium high, the hop bitterness is medium low.

F: Medium body, medium high carbonation.

O: A full flavored malty and fruity pale ale. The hop aromas are a little muted due to age but it is still a pretty nice drink.
