Very Good
Barrel Aged Mountain StandardBarrel Aged Mountain Standard
Notes: Tucked away in a dark corner of our cellar, a liquid as black as coal rests peacefully in bourbon barrels. You know it as Double Black IPA. After a full trip around the sun, the beer has developed into a whole new beast, with notes of roasted malt, sweet chocolate, raisin and caramel.

Poured from 12-ounce bottle into a clear glass goblet. Deep blackish brown in color, with tan highlights and a two-finger tan head. Aromas and flavors tend heavily toward bourbon and barrel. Lots of malty sweetness, plus some oaky sourness on the palate. As it warmed, notes of dark roasted malt, espresso bean, and licorice began to present themselves. Mouthfeel is on the lighter side of medium. Finish is a little sweet, with a touch of lingering burnt-coffee bitterness on the aftertaste. Even at cellar temp, the alcohol is surprisingly well hidden. Very good, but some time in the cellar might mitigate some of the oaky harshness.

Not quite black pour, small receding head of tannish foam. Caramel aromas abound with roasted malt, miniscule presence from the oak barrel. And, this is pretty big, oxidation like what you get from aged Barleywines/Old Ales. Caramel and roasted malt, sweet on the top of that from milk chocolate, toffee, and light oxidation. Not as face forward as in the smell but it’s there. Not in a horrendous way. Nicer enough and I am sure that I will give it a good enough rating but I don’t think I will buy it again. You know. .

Appearance: After a slowly building bubble show, the head sets in at two full fingers of beige foam topping the espresso colored liquid; splashy lacing coats the glass

Smell: Bourbon-infused chocolate and caramel with hints of raisin; piney hops emerge underneath

Taste: The Bourbon is well-integrated into the chocolate and caramel flavors, on the front end, with the raisin emerging; in the middle, modest pine tones arrive, after the swallow, but the sweeter elements prevail in the finish

Mouthfeel: Medium to full body with moderate carbonation

Overall: Barrel aging a black IPA seems like an unusual idea but the result here is closer to an old ale; very enjoyable

Thanks, NathanBeets, for the opportunity

12oz bottle purchased for $9. Dark black, looks liek a porter. No bourbon barrel in the aroma or in the flavor, very disappointing. Tastes sweet like raisins or prunes, I think there might be some hops as well. So disappointing that I poured it out. Waste of $9.

Pours a dark mahogany color with a tan head and some lacing looks nice. Smell is roasted malts with wood and caramel. Taste follows without a barrel presence, more wood and some dark fruits with some hops . Mouth feel was sweet with malts and some hops woody vanilla and slight bourbon. $8.99 a bottle so i was letdown by this, was expecting more , would not buy again but glad to try it.

12oz bottle, I initially passed on it because of its price, but it was still on the shelf at my next visit, so I decided to give it a shot. Rigorous pour reveals a tall, rocky, khaki head that slowly fades atop a near black colored ale. Boozy aroma of mainly bourbon with some vanilla, oak, chocolate, and roast. Flavor is similar to aroma with bourbon, oak, chocolate and vanilla in the forefront with notes of caramel, toffee, raisin, cherry, roasted barley, and earthy hops in the background. Full body, ample carbonation, alcohol is present but more warming than overly boozy. Overall, I think it's good, but I think it is overpriced.

2017 bottle into a snifter.

L: When pouring appears thin brown but in the glass its solid black. Half finger of low density white head with minimal retention and little to no lacing.

S: Nose is barrel dominated, charred oak, bourbon and vanilla.

T: Now the base beer shows up, plenty of hop character and chocolate malt to balance out the barrel heavy nose. Finishes nice and clean for the style.

F: Feels thinner bodied than I remember the base, very slick on the tongue, lower carbonation, drinks very easy...almost too easy.

O: Wish I'd bought more. Hitting many things of preference for my palate. You probably have to enjoy Cascadian Black Ales to get down with this one. Another Odell hit for my tastes.

Very dark brown body topped with a thick, creamy head. Aroma brings notes of charred and roasted grains; some booze elements; chocolate. Rich, dark chocolate sweetness to the flavor; boozy brownies; low-level bitterness. Velvety mouthfeel; some sharp alcohol and bitter, biting qualities to counterbalance the residual sugars.

This is a rich and luscious super version of O'Dell's regular Mountain Standard offering with a nice, bold barrel-aged alcohol edge. Great balance, and outstanding complexity with the flavors. I don't know what kind of wooden barrels were used with the aging phase (probably some sort of whiskey is my guess), but that factor adds a very fine element to the overall picture. Good stuff...

Pours a somewhat hazy dark brown and sits black in the glass with a thin half finger of frothy foam.

Nice piney and grassy hops with roasted malt and chocolate lending a sturdy platform. Subtle oak and bourbony notes to add.

Roastiness comes across in flavor strong too while chocolate also makes its presence while the hop profile takes a back seat. The oak and bourbon comes through in flavor as well, but are laid back.

Full-bodied, medium carbonation, roasty, slightly bitter finish.

Overall, an interesting style in itself and a strong candidate for barrel aging. This brew needs a little something, but is overall very good.
