Black with a thin off-white head. Smells of oak, vanilla, and toffee, which is to say whiskey. Taste is a bit spicier with more of the chocolate coming through but also just a bit on the bitter side. Boozy, which is fine by me, though perhaps not as smooth as it could be. Medium bodied.

Was out in CO for a few days and got a chance to try out the new whiskey barrel aged Lugene. Dark, rich and strong as a good stout should be. Had a great smell and taste, but a slight whisky draw took a little bit away from a great beer. Definitely worth trying!

Pours pitch black with a nice dark tan head. Smells boozy, some chocolate, a bit too yeasty for me. Thankfully, the yeast does not come through as strongly in the taste. Definitely taste the barrel, rich chocolate, some coffee, light vanilla. Pretty creamy feel, good carbonation. Overall a nice job on this, not my favorite BBA Imp Stout, but it tastes great.

$ 9.58 (Including shipping)/12 oz bottle ($ 0.798) from Tavour, Seattle, WA. Reviewed 12/12/18.
“Bottled 2018” on label, stored at 42 degrees and served at 50 degrees in a hand washed and dried Jester King snifter. Final temperature 54 degrees.
Appearance – 4.5.
Body – Dark brown/black, opaque, some effervescence. When held to the light, still opaque.
Head – Large (Maximum 4.5 cm, aggressive center pour), tan, medium density, average retention, diminishing to a five to eight mm ring fed by effervescence, a complete, rocky, thin layer, and pieces of lacing left behind as the head retracts.
Lacing – Excellent! Thick, complete rings of tiny to small bubbles, connected by many short columns.
First pour – Medium brown, clear.
Aroma – 4 – Chocolate, roasted malt.
Flavor – 4.5 - Begins slightly sweet with chocolate, caramel, and some lightly roasted malt. There is a hint of whiskey flavor in the background but not barrel flavor. A couple of minutes after swallowing, the whiskey is more noticeable, as is a mild gastric warming. No alcohol (10.5% ABV), no diacetyl, no dimethylsulfide.
Palate – 3.5 – Medium, almost creamy, soft carbonation.
Impression and interpretation – 4.25 – Looks, smells, and tastes fine, with an above average palate. Still, it seems too pricey for a milk stout.

Dark chocolate to black pour, with a fingernail of beige head.

Aroma of whiskey oak and some light milk chocolate. A little underwhelming.

Flavor is of clear alcohol, cocoa, ethanol, and milk chocolate. It's got all the runnings of Lugene, but the booziness and oak of the barrel kind of throws it off track a bit.

Feel is medium bodied, hot, and dry.

Overall, a bit of a disappointment given the price point and the fact that they chose to bring a retired beer back in this manner. They may have used the wrong barrel for this one.

It's a lot like a cup of hot chocolate with a few glugs of vodka.

From a 12oz bottle, dated simply 2017. Served in a tulip.

Pours a clean mahogany-black with a scant half-finger of short-lived loose, bubbly head. Leaves a small bubbly, fizzy cap and collar with no particular lacing to speak of.

Smell: if you've ever had one of those foil-wrapped liquor or cordial filled chocolates, that's pretty much exactly what this smells like, the whiskey one.

The first taste is of the whiskey barrel, all wet punky oak and vanilla, followed by a dusty cloud of cocoa powder and chocolate liqueur and a sweet, boozy caramel flavor underlying it all. The oaky, vanilla character persists on the tongue long after the last sip.

Feel is smooth with a sweet, marshmallowy, mouthcoating medium body and good carbonation.

An interesting beer. I loved the whisky barrel flavor and I loved the chocolate liqueur flavor, but they didn't really seem to belong together and, in fact, it was almost like having two beers mixed together into a beer cocktail, if that makes sense. So, I sort of arbitrarily knocked a quarter point off on a technical demerit while happily slurping away at it nonetheless.

Pours a deep dark brown with a generous dark tan head that falls away fairly rapidly. Great lacing. Aroma is dark roasted malt, chocolate and whiskey. Flavor is dark chocolate forward, faint hints of the whiskey barrel, sweet vanilla and oak. Feel is medium bodied with low carbonation, but completely adequate for the style. Overall a fantastic beer.
