Notes: The wise eyes of tradition focus on our brewhouse as we concoct our famed Double Pilsner. Refreshing and delicate yet bold and assertive, its golden straw color leaves nowhere for imperfections to hide. Scents of pilsner malt and light floral hop aromas combine with a rich malt flavor to create a balanced and warming Imperial Pilsner. Rest assured, you’ve made a wise choice.

Picked this up while in Colorado, the limited reviews showed it rated highly and I have a think for imperial pilsners every now and then.

Really freakin pale yellow, could be the lightest beer I've seen, similar to good ol' Bud Light. Perfectly clear body though. Head was only a quarter inch to start with and reduced to a skim layer. A few streams of carbonation bubbles rise to the surface. Decent looking beer for the style.

Pretty strong aroma though, not over powering, but has some oomph. Lots of Saaz and other Bavarian style hops as expected. Clean malting with some yeasty bread characteristics.

Flavor is intersting and fits the double pilsner moniker well. Lots of bavarian hops showing through again. Has that light bready malt backbone to it and the hops are filled with a straw and floral mixture, a little fruity too. A bit sweet though but has some good bitterness in the finish. Has a bit of spiciness to it in a strange way and some definate yeast characteristics.

Mouthfeel is reasonably full, medium bodied really. Light carbonation only lends a little crispness. Good drinkability but the sweetness is a bit much for me to have too many. Overall a solid beer for the style.

A - Poured out a cloudy golden yellow color with a small, fizzy white head. Left no lace.

S - It smelled of grains and corn.

T - It tasted rahter floral. It had some nice hops and was sweet. It was almost a cider-like taste.

M - It was crisp and sharp. A light to medium-bodied beer.

D - This was pretty good. It didn't look or smell to great but it had a really nice flavor.

Thanks to fretlessman71 over at realbeer for this one. Poured from a 12 ounce bottle into my nonic Imperial pint glass. The pilsner appears a hazed golden yellow color with about two fingers of lingering bone white head. Nose and flavor consist of grassy, earthy hops, a bit of peppery spice, toasted grain, a good dose of sweet malt. This pils is approaching full bodied with ample carbonation. Well done, and thanks again fret.

I had never heard of a double pilsner before this beer, so I was pretty curious. Hey, Odell makes quality stuff, so it was a safe order. I got it on draft, and the look was classic pilsner . . . Clear and golden. Like most pilsners, this one has a very faint , slightly cleaning fluid smell. The taste is light and crisp. But with the higher than average alcohol content, the taste also had a slightly bitter bite to it. Not an unpleasant beer. Just, guess, "meh."

Appearance: A beautifully clear straw color with nice carbonation and a lacy thin white head with good retention.
Aroma: Soft aromatics with lots of biscuit and soft hops backed by malty sweetness.
Taste: Biscuit comes through really well and this beer has a nice malt backbone. Has good hop bitterness that lingers at the back of the tongue. Hop flavor is soft and mellow with just a bit of an edge at the end. Overall balance is excellent and outstanding for a beer with this much alcohol (8.1%). The alcohol hides itself well but you can subtly detect it's there.
Mouthfeel: Medium bodied and finishes dry.
Drinkability: Very drinkable beer but would limit intake because of the alcohol content. It's definitely not a lawnmower beer but it's an excellent example of what I envision a double Pilsner style would be.

thanks to mushroomcloud via Secret Bunny '07 for this bottle

A - this pilsner pours a light yellow/golden color, with a thin pure white head and clear save a few scant carbonation bubbles streaming to the top

S - a lemon/citrine zest atop a yeasty wheatiness, a rather nice combination, behind it lies a slight candy-esque sweetness

T - weird, the citrine/wheatiness persists from the aroma, however the dominant aroma is highly medicinal, like, for those who have had it, cepacol, that hospital use throat spray/lozenge/rinse, not a bad flavor, just has that menthol/cepacol flavor, not what i expected

M&D - medium bodied, more so than i expected after seeing the pour and the crispness of the beer, biscuity would be a good term, however that medicinal quality throws the drinkability off slightly

Appearance: Hazy neon yellow/orange with a one finger foamy white head.

Aroma: Yeast and earthy/grassy hops. Subtle crystal and pilsen malts.

Taste: Really good grain flavors in here. Sweet and spicy (maybe rye malt?). There is also a good hop presence and a hop flavor that makes it uniquely Odell's. Citrus and sweet fruit juice. Really digging this one. Almost drinks like an ale. Don't taste any of that 8.1% ABV.

Mouthfeel: Silky smooth and yet assertive on the palate. Medium bodied but feels much more robust. Highly drinkable.

Final Thoughts: If I was drinking this blind I'd probably think it was lager version of Odell IPA. It has that great hop flavor and juicyness that they pack most of their brews. Would I drink it again? Yes, wish they'd make a sessionable version!

Pale yellow in color with a flurry of bubbles and an almost pure white head that ends in a wild and sticky lace.

Clean aroma with straw and sugar prevalent.

Grain, fresh-cut grass, a vein of fruit, and a snappy hop bite to the tongue. This one is working brilliantly so far.

Has a medium body and goes down smooth at the edges with a soft core.

I haven't had a good double pils in a while, and this is the perfect beer to draw me back to the genius of this oft overlooked style.

Mostly yellow with golden highlights, creamy head not too excitable. Very clear. Aroma is pale malt, grain husk, a touch of earthy hop, with some sweetness backing it up.

The malt flavor is actually quite fruity, with a good dash of flowery and citric hop oils that keep things on the ground. The alcohol is quite evident in the back of the mouth. Finish is good, big fruits.

Not as viscous as some double pils, maybe medium body with pretty high carbonation although maybe not for the style. A whole lot of alcohol, becomes more and more evident.

Drinkable and flavorful, not a particular favorite but not a bad choice.

The aroma was an earthy hop smell. The color was clear golden with a bubbly white head. Taste was sticky, slightly sweet, earthy, and good. I liked this, probably the best pilsener I have ever had. It certainly had an “Imperial” feel to it. I now need to go buy a sixer of this for the old fridge. The only thing that suffers here is drinkability but that is to be expected with a Double Pilsener.

Pours out a slightly hazy straw color with a two finger off-white head. Retention is excellent and leaves rings of lacing. Carbonation looks lacking.

Sweet corn and tropical fruits in the nose pineapple comes to mind. Theres a pleasant floral bitterness with some grains. Smells heavy.

Extremely sweet. There is in fact a corn sweetness in it that I don't care for. Bitterness is low compared to the nose and theres a lingering medicina charater that isnt wanted.

The mouthfeel is thick and syrupy. Carbonation is low.

Maybe I just didnt get this beer. I can finish it I just don't see myself ever wanting to drink another. Not even for free let alone 5 dollars a bottle.

A - Light straw. Not much head. Wispy lacing.

S - medium malt aroma - some hop present.

T - Ahh - yum. Pils not my fav, but lots of flavor here. Nice malt center, sweet and deep with balanced bitter.

M - Medium, good carb and coating, nice sweet to bitter ratio. Deeper flavor and body than first thought.

D - Very easy to drink, despite the ABV.

Grainy/toasty malt with grassy/lemongrassy hops. Apple with drop of honey sweetness. Crisp and clean.

Pale-medium yellow, good clarity, nice head, good bit of lace.

Amazingly thick and smooth body suggests syrup with alcohol - no alcohol heat detected though. Creamy malt rolls lazily over the tongue depositing only hints of flavor at first. A subtle hop sensation of tart and bitter creeps in. Light apple-like fruit flavor and accompanying sweetness. The malt grows into a fresh loaf of warm, fluffy bread. A little more hop flavor comes in focus with the lemongrass spice and floral leaf.

The Verdict:
Truly luscious body with a coy palate. Fantastic beer.

A: Super clear golden color with a thin covering of white head. The perfect looking pilsner.

S: Not of bready pilsner malt in the nose. Clean fermentation. Clean lager yeast with just a touch of citrus like hops in the nose. The nose is spot on.

T: This is a good pilsner period. You do get a slight touch of alcohol in the finish but the gentle hops cut it down a bit. Super clean beer. Lager yeast. Lots of pilsner malt.

M: Little bit of a heavy side of medium body. To be expected for the ABV.

D: Super drinkable. Really nice beer from these guys.

12 oz bottle into a pint glass (I didn't have access to my glassware).

Nice golden color like you would expect from a pilsner. Nice but nothing special. Thick 2 finger frothy head forms when pouring. Slight lacing and a constant bubbling from the beer.

Crisp and slightly skunky like you would expect from a lager. Smelled nice, but again, nothing special.

Nice fresh taste with bitter finish. Nothing in particular stands out about the taste.

The mouthfeel was the highlight of this beer. This one was real creamy and slightly oily. Thick. Kind of a funny feeling for a pilsner.

I only had one of these and I'm not sure when I'll finish the rest of the sixer. For $11, I probably wouldn't buy any more. For a similar taste, I would probably go with something more ordinary like Pilsner Urquell or some Euro Lager. I had been looking around for this beer for a while. I was expecting a lot more from a double pilsner.
