This is fresh, first batch of the year

A – Pours a strong 2" head, settles down to A light amber pillow that stays throughout, leaving good lace.

S – Hops, citrus, lemon, grapefruit, this beer also adds in clover, honey and cinnamon, great winter time notes; however they are greatly subdued.

T – Nice hop character, great balance with the malt however. The clover honey comes through again, there is a nice sweet malt balance here, but it is not overdone.

M – Just about perfect, smooth, velvet, this is exceptional, if anything it has a short finish.

O – Wonderful beer, too bad it is only a seasonal offering, but it just makes this beer that much better. Perfect balance, brings subdued local winter spice to a nice and hoppy beer. A+ Odell.

From a 355 ml bottle (best before May 29, 2013) into a globe glass.

A-This brew pours with two fingers of tan foam. The head has decent staying power and leaves some lacing on the glass. The brew is mostly clear and garnet/ruby hued with brown highlights.

S-This brew smells great. It is quite spicy with a fair dose of mint and pine-scented hops. I detect a little whiff of caramel-scented malts to balance things out.

T-The taste is not as intense as the smell. There is still a spicy, herbal, pine hop component that dominates, but the malts move up in strength and sort of mute the spiciness. A nicely balanced brew with a spicy finish.

M-The feel is a little watery and light for me. I could have used a bit more heft.

O-This is a well-done red ale with good looks and good drinkability. The smell especially hits all the right notes with lots of spice and herb character, but there is enough malt here to distinguish this from an IPA. I would definitely drink this again.

A: Dark amber-brown color with a large head, more than a cm thick, dense and lasting.
S: Highly resinous hop aroma, with an faint underlay of sweet malt.
T: Great mix of malt and hops! Initial taste is highly bitter with a rush of hop flavor, piney, wood resin, followed by a substantial malt backbone, toasted, with caramel, sweet enough to break the hoppy dryness at the finish.
M: Good body, substantial but not too thick and heavy.
O: Damn tasty beer, one of the better red IPAs out there.

Pours a sexy amber with off-white head that is thick at first then recedes to a thin layer that remains for the pint. Nose has a very nice fruity component, perhaps passion fruit or at least a very mixed batch of fruit aromas. A generous toffee sweetness is welcomed onto the palate at first, with plenty of "juicy fruit" hoppiness in the balance. There's a slight candied quality to this ale too. Finish is toffee sweet with lingering citrus. Very drinkable and quite delicious.

A beautiful, clear reddish brown beer. There is an off white to light tan head that leaves a wide curtain off lacing. The aroma is malty and piny with some nice floral notes. The taste is sweet malt, pine and grapefruit notes. Very tasty beer.

Serving glass: Poured from bottle into Nonic Imperial Pint.

Appearance: Rich reddish-amber with thin off-white head and light lacing.

Smell: Tart grapefruit, mango and citrus are at the forefront. Smells like an IPA except the malts are more complex with caramel, biscuit and rye-like qualities.

Taste: Mostly dried out caramel malt backbone which is overridden by loads of citrusy American hops with strong grapefruit and orange. The finish is spicy, bitter and pine-like. Somewhat reminiscent of rye as well.

Feel: Moderately low carbonation, smooth and creamy body, dry finish. Could use either a tinge more carbonation or body - one or the other - but that is a very minor gripe.

Drinkability: Fantastic Non-Imperial Red Ale; actually the best I have had for the style. Highly recommended.

12oz bottle poured into my Sweetwater pint glass. Best by: 4/28/11.

Pours a clear dark amber with a thick finger-width beige head on top. Good retention; lots of sticky lace on the glass. The nose is bursting with fresh citrus, pine needles, herbs. Very fresh-smelling. I dig it.

The mouth is moderately full. Good heft to it, but drinkable still. There's a bit of a hop smack at the onset, but this flavor is fleeting and short-lived. There's not a lot of depth to this one. Mild sweetness on the finish. Bready. This is a stellar drinkable beer, but I thought aspects of it could be more pronounced. It's not a palate-torcher, which is fine, but there needs to be a bit more "pop" to the flavor. Still, I could see myself having this again and again. Good beer.

Poured from 12oz bottle into pint glass. Pours red-amber with a huge foamy cream colored head that laces nicely throughout. Hoppy aroma of citrus and pine, balanced by caramel and bready malts. Flavor suggests the same as the aroma. Medium body with moderate carbonation, finishing slightly bitter and dry. A decent red ale. I actually liked this better the second time around on tap!
