Pours clear red color with a finger width foamy head. Head retention and lacing are both good. Has a piney, grapefruit aroma. Big floral notes. Maybe some apple. Nice, smooth malt to hop transition. Resin, maybe some apple taste at the end. Can detect some caramel. It is seems to have the right amount of malt to hops for me. Good beer. Would definitely purchase again.

On tap at the Red Cow, into an English pint glass

A: reddish amber with a tight 2 finger off-white head that lasts for several minutes
S: faint earthy/piney, woody notes and a little caramel and breadiness
T: more bready heaviness, some earthy herbal hop notes that give a little lift in the second half. As with most of Odell's beers, this seems well made but the flavors don't completely harmonize for me.
M: this is the best part of this beer. Medium carbonation, but in terms of flavors -- full, creamy, smooth.

overall: easy drinking but substantial...tastes like a hoppy red should. Doesn't do anything that really grabs your attention...in fact one might think it a little muted, I go back and forth on the balance but there is some nice subtlety that over the course of one or two, really pleases.

Bottle poured into a BarrelHouse Brewing Co pint glass

A: Pours gorgeous deep reddish amber with a frothy tan head that settles to a light layer and leaves some very nice lacing.

S: Toasty bready malt, a bit floral and fruity, pine, and a little toffee sweetness.

T: Bready malts, toasty, even a bit roasty, citrus, orange and a little grapefruit, pine, faintly herbal, and a little toffee sweetness.

M: A bit on the fuller end of medium body, mild carbonation, smooth and a little creamy.

O: Nicely balanced, but for a red IPA I was hoping the hops would jump out a little more. My bottle is well within the enjoy by date, but I would love to see what it's like super fresh. As it stands, still an enjoyable beer.

While red ales tend to be a dime a dozen, this one is carrying on the lineage of the Odell ESR, one of the best big read brews of all time.
Pours a cherrywood color that looks brown initially, but reveals lots of red highlights in the light. An eggshell foam cap sticks to the walls of the glass and leaves a massive trail as you work your way down.
Huge bitter, juicy hops hit your nose immediately...but then give way to a bit of bready character.
The palate starts off with a tiny bit of sweetness followed by an assault of American "C" hops. Piney and grapefruity flavors cross, with a little caramel sweetness creeping in here and there, only to finish with more hop character. A blind tasting might tell you this is an IPA, but the slight caramel hints take this to a slightly different places.
Mouthfeel serves the purpose of keeping tons of big hop oil flavors from making things too slick or too foamy on the other side of the coin.
While the size/potency of a typical IPA, I've noticed that this is slightly more quaffable for me, and the flavor profile doesn't get old. When paired with food, it helps to bring out sweetness and sourness equally well.

While I still definitely prefer the old ESR, this is a solid beer that's a pretty big jump over most typical red/amber beers floating around.
