More people buy IPAs than other beers.....but that's no reason to call an Amber Ale an IPA. I notice in the accompanying photo that it USED TO BE called Red Ale...nuff said.

This is a very good Amber ale.....sweet, very malt-forward, nice deep red color....Caramel and Munich malts for sure. No evidence of much of any hops. Not too heavy, sessionable.

So it's just NOT an IPA. Go back to the correct category, and sell it that way. There's no shame in making a very good, full-body, winter brew.

A reddish-gold pour, slightly hazy with a solid head leaving nice lacing. Aroma background of the piney hops, with notes of malt ... Is there any rye there? Nice malt forward, with the hops bitterness coming in later, in pale ale style. So, I'm questioning why the label states "Red IPA", but that's Odell's choice, not mine. A little sweetness on the front end and dryness on the back is a great balance. They nailed this one.

Poured from a 12 ounce bottle into a Shaker pint glass, "best by" date 5-6-16.

APPEARANCE: pours a beautiful ruby color with small suspended sediments floating about, one-finger off-white head that eventually dissipated leaving a thin, unbroken layer of small bubbles, significant lacing on the glass, medium carbonation.

SMELL: bread, caramel, slight roasted note and somewhat flowery.

TASTE: the taste follows the nose, initially sweet caramel and a roasted note, bread then a mild piney hop profile.

PALATE: medium body and carbonation.

OVERALL: this is a solid beer, I enjoyed it and would buy it again, the roasted noted are subtle and the hops are subtle but it works, I would recommend to anyone who enjoys the style.

Pretty solid beer - I like the smell. Just a hint of malts and some fruit, maybe grapes. The taste is very balanced - I especially like how the malt balances with the fruit. Nothing sticks out but overall it's very enjoyable.

The Runoff is a very nice amber....easy to drink and enough hops to make it interesting. It poured a rich amber with white head that is leaving a spotty lace. There is not much to smell...some bread and hop notes. The taste is evenly balanced but finishes with a slight bitter crispness. There is some sweet caramel and bread base with light hop top. The mouthfeel is medium in body with good carbonation. Overall it is a solid offering.

Poured from a bottle with what I think says 5/6/16D. D for dunno what that means. Anyway, color is a dark copper and copper head too. My first thought was "malt". Noticing it had been left in the unfrigerated section even though it said please refrigerate on bottle. Anyway lacing is beautiful, smell is non-existant. No malt even really, maybe just the slightest roasted smell at first pour and from bottle but yeah. Taste is where the pale-heavy malt mixture comes out, and this beer is actually pretty refreshing. A pretty good beer, kind of laid back taste and feel. I actually dig the kind of warm buzz it is giving in the face and appreciate the more dark malts in the flavor now. Darker, malt beers aren't really my thing but this one is pretty good. I feel like I've had similar beers with more alcohol in them.

A: Dark amber-brown color with a large head, more than a cm thick, dense and lasting.
S: Highly resinous hop aroma, with an faint underlay of sweet malt.
T: Great mix of malt and hops! Initial taste is highly bitter with a rush of hop flavor, piney, wood resin, followed by a substantial malt backbone, toasted, with caramel, sweet enough to break the hoppy dryness at the finish.
M: Good body, substantial but not too thick and heavy.
O: Damn tasty beer, one of the better red IPAs out there.

Pours an almost perfect sunset red. Smells of fresh picked pinon mixed with mountain dew. Taste like a west coast ipa witha thicker base and feels like a good red ale

L: Lovely red-brown hue. Coarse beige head. Enticing. Great lacing.
A; Hops come through first with citrus and pine. A deep note reveals caramel malts.
T: First, tangerine and orange. Then the bready malts come through to round out the taste. Moderate bitterness. Begins like an IPA, then takes on amber qualities, and finally finishes bitter. Bread and caramel dominate after the initial citrus. A little bit of spicyness.
M: High carbonation. Effervescent. Moderate body.
O: A beer that walks the line. Drinkable yet complex. Well done.

This is like a lighter version of the O'Dell Extra Special Red Ale I would venture a guess. Hits that 1/2" white head range, bright red appearance with ample clarity. Aroma was mildly hoppy first, then as much in the taste. The hopping rate kept the mouthfeel in hoppy territory and kept it from becoming too much like Killian's with its red/amber ale malt deadwood flavor trappings.

Really pretty picture of this one when it pours out, reddish-amber, but with lots of gleaming to it. 1/2" off white head, good retention and the lace is sticky down the side of the glass.

Aroma fought with the hops and whatever that malt is that subdues everything else in a red ale. But the taste and mouthfeel allow the hops to shine more than they do in the average red ale. Carbonation stays high enough to keep that wooden/damp mouthfeel that is typical for red ales. Probably a top tier red ale.

A bit out of season, but what the hay.

A : The bottle says that the beer is the color of the runoff from the waters of the red rocks. I'd have to say in their defense it looks absolutely beautiful. A beautiful red rock body with some rose and iced tea hues, sitting at 90% opaque. The head is yellow popcorn colored and stays firm at 1 finger while leaving lace on the sides of the glass. Well done.

S : Hop bite out front in the nose (grapefruit/light pine), with a roasted malt character right behind it. Dead on for style. The bouquet could be stronger, but otherwise it's completely spec.

T : A pleasant and balanced melange of roasted caramel maltiness and muted (yet dull stabs of) hop. A bit of blueberry, cracker, and strawberry can be tasted as well as orange peel (hop). Slight antiseptic but not bad. There was something else I was thinking of but I lost it now.

F : Appropriate carbonation and a delicate creaminess match with an almost perfect semi-dryness that crescendos into a balance mixture at the finish.

O : Even out of the bottle this beer tastes great. But even better, the visual fireworks of seeing the lacing gather and dissolve as the beer is drank even from my recliner in an every day pint glass makes for a fabulous experience. Visual, smell, taste, feel...it's all there. Runoff Red is a good shot. Odell knows IPAs.

L: Pours reddish amber with a slight haze under a 2” cream colored clingy foam cap.
S: Pine, citrus, grass and malt.
T: Fruit, light grain, spice, sweet malt, and cola lead to an assertive bitter finish.
F: Creamy and juicy with a medium body and carbonation.
O: Nicely balanced and easy to drink.

Poured from a 12 oz bottle into a pint glass. Pours with a fingers worth of off-white foam that slowly dissipates to about a quarter of a finger's worth. Beer has a amber/red color with very small particles floating throughout. Has strong, extremely sweet floral aromas that mask mild aromas of pine. Initial taste is of strong floral and pine flavors from hops with mild citrus flavors. Hop flavors persist as mild malt flavors enter to create an amzing final taste. The downfall in this beer is the mouthfeel. Slightly too carbonated and all the hops leave the mouth really dry. Overall, this is an amazing beer. A definite re-buy.

pours a slightly hazy red-amber color with a big, frothy beige head. The smell is primarily citrus hops, with traces of pine and even a bit of the malt aroma. Taste is full of citrus hops well balanced with sweet, caramely malt. This is a really well done, well balanced IPA. Tons of hops with a strong malty backbone

A good, easy drinking Red. Nice hop flavor, certainly not overpowering.

This would be a good gateway beer for those willing to try a new style. Well done Odell.

Appearance - Pours copper red with a khaki finger width head. Fair retention, breaking down to a thin, consistent layer of surface suds.

Smell - Pineapple aroma permeates the nostrils like sweat through the skin of a fat man in the desert.

Taste - Pineapple is less on the tongue than what shows through the nose, but is still the most prominent flavor. There to meet it are notes of orange and caramel. Finish is bittersweet and all around awesome.

Mouthfeel - Medium bodied with light, silky texture. Smooth, easy drinker.

Overall - Though a bit more tropical with the hop profile, this is quite remeniscent of Deschutes' Red Chair. This is a good thing. Quite delicious. I can only hope California starts getting Odell distribution.

Great beers are when you are trying hard to find something wrong and you can't, while at the same time you might not be able to point out exactly what you like about but you do..this beer falls into that category. If I had a gun to my head I would say it had a kind of flat finish but that is outweighed by the initial feel or sneaky hoppy rush.

Reddish amber colored with a touch of haziness to the look. A half inch of beige head is present. Brussels lacing. Aroma is fresh dough and judiciously used piney hops. The flavor is a well balanced presentation of amber malt but the hops seem more piney tasting than citrus. The body is moderately carbonated and overall fairly light for the style.

Poured into a Russian River "tion" glass. Best by 05/17/15.

Appearance: Pours about a finger of khaki head atop a reddish mahogany body. Nice head retention in a bubbly film with creamy lacing in the glass.

Aroma: Resinous citrus up front with a floral grassiness from the dry hopping. Sweet, toasted malt backbone holds up the hops and complements the grassy dry hopping.

Taste: More citrusy like hop notes up front, almost like a light lemon or white grape before leading into a more bitter pine and toasted sweet malts (think baguette) and a resinous hop bite finish.

Mf: Light/medium body with a coarse hoppy feel. Finish is a bit astringent and drying.

Overall: A pleasant hoppy ale that while having a good hop profile is nicely tied together by the sweet bready malt build. The more pine like hop notes meld really well with the malts and I’d even like to see a more of the pine than the lighter citrusy notes. Runoff Red would be a good work week IPA to stock in the fridge; hits all the right notes without dragging. I’d really like to see what an imperial version of this with a bit of rye and Amarillo hops.

Poured into a Dogfish Head IPA glass.

A - 4.75 - Poured a deep, dark ruby red color with tinges of cognac. Formed a finger and a half of thick, dense, light tan colored head. Good head potential and retention. Forms Nice rings of lacing on the glass, spotty permanent lacing left behind.
S - 4 - Pine, grapefruit, hops, rainwater earthiness and a malty backbone. The malt is harmonious with the other aromas rather than smelling like a malt bomb DIPA that has sat too long!
T - 4.5 - Balance is the key here. Medium sweet hops and pine upfront which fades into a malty finish. Doesn't finish sweet or bitter, rather on a neutral malty tone. Extremely well balanced and decently sessionable flavor. Would have received a perfect 5 in the taste, but I would have liked just a little more bitterness on the finish. Still, extremely good flavor.
F - 5 - Wow, this is full-bodied, creamy and thick. Can't believe this isn't a stout!
O - 4.75 - REALLY awesome representation of the red IPA style. Once again, Odell impresses me with their IPA game! Highly recommend this one to fans of IPAs looking for something just a little bit different from your normal IPA.

Appearance: Red-amber, good head, looks very nice.

Smell: Floral, some citrus.

Taste: Nice balanced sweetness and citrus hops. Prickly mouthfeel, but also feels a little heavier in body than most IPA's.

Overall: Odell makes a lot of good beers, this one is another solid one. Nice balanced IPA with a little more heft than I was expecting. Worth a shot.

This beer is exactly what it says it is - a red IPA. Not super-hoppy, thanks to the malty balance of the red, but definitely not just your standard red. The color is a nice dark mahogany, again not quite your normal red. There's a lot of lace on this one too. This is a winter/spring seasonal and I'm glad I picked up a six-pack, even though it's not my favorite beer style. I'll try anything from Odell, and this is no exception.
