More people buy IPAs than other beers.....but that's no reason to call an Amber Ale an IPA. I notice in the accompanying photo that it USED TO BE called Red Ale...nuff said.

This is a very good Amber ale.....sweet, very malt-forward, nice deep red color....Caramel and Munich malts for sure. No evidence of much of any hops. Not too heavy, sessionable.

So it's just NOT an IPA. Go back to the correct category, and sell it that way. There's no shame in making a very good, full-body, winter brew.

Runoff Red – Red IPA (6.5%) - O'Dell Brewing Co. (Colorado)
☆☆☆

App: Deep raspberry pulp red with a slight inclination towards brown. Nice one and a half finger head that retains very well and leaves ample sticky lacing. Slightly hazy, but overall a good looking beer.

Smell: Nose is pretty much all hops with a sort of odd, petroleum like smell lurking in the background. Honestly a little weak on the nose.

Taste: Pretty straightforwardly hoppy and slightly bitter. Hops are earthy, slightly solvent, and a little bit piney. Small hints of biscuit and roasted malts in the background, but they never harmonize with the bitterness of the hops like a world-class IPA. Pleasant, lingering hops bitterness. Doesn't totally wreck your palate with acidity like some IPAs. Could possibly benefit from a little more Caramel malts. Flavors open a little with warming, but don't really evolve. Very sessionable, but not remarkable.

Mouth: Overall a little thin on the body side, carbonation is good and smooth.

Home tasting, 12oz bottle into Snifter. 1/4/14.

Really pretty picture of this one when it pours out, reddish-amber, but with lots of gleaming to it. 1/2" off white head, good retention and the lace is sticky down the side of the glass.

Aroma fought with the hops and whatever that malt is that subdues everything else in a red ale. But the taste and mouthfeel allow the hops to shine more than they do in the average red ale. Carbonation stays high enough to keep that wooden/damp mouthfeel that is typical for red ales. Probably a top tier red ale.

A: Slightly hazy amber, frothy light tan head. Clumpy, sticky lacing down the glass.

S: Clean, sweet malt smell. Traces of pine and slight nuttiness. Nice smell...

T: Dry, slighty acidic malt taste but hops outbalance it right away. Hop flavor is pleasant, very woodsy/pine, hop oil. I really like the malt sweetness I get, but the hop flavors pretty much make the taste of this beer.

M: I like the body, smooth mouthfeel, not too carbonated.

D: Pretty hoppy for the typical red ale, but pretty easy to drink. Bought a six pack of this stuff, and I will easily be able to finish it off.

Great seasonal beer for Odell that I just randomly picked out when standing @ the store. Definitely pours like its name reddish orange. It didn't taste like your typical IPA to me, being sweet w/ a mild bitter after taste. Would definitely scoop up again for the Spring season. Good work!

Amber in color with a beautiful tan head.

Hop smell is strong. Notes of caramel and bread.

Has a great malt backbone. Faint bit of alcohol in the finish. A sweet touch of caramel as well.

Mouthfeel is a bit grainy in the finish.

Overall a Good beer.

Dark copper reddish brown.
Creamy lasting head.
Aroma is nice but not prominent.
Definitely malty, but hoppy bitterness finish.
Medium carbonation.
Nice hoppy beer for a cool spring day.

Got on trade from vasdef42 as an extra, thanks!!

This beer has only 25 reviews and it's #10 for this style...says something huh?

Poured and right off the bat noticed my favorite hop smell, fantastic hop nose and good clear color. Taste matched the smell which is similar to their IPA (LOVE IT) and is very well balanced.

MF and drinkibility are great, if I could get this beer it would be in the fridge all the time! Again, this blows Red Rocket, Green Flash Red, Big Hoppy Monster etc away....

pours a slightly hazy red-amber color with a big, frothy beige head. The smell is primarily citrus hops, with traces of pine and even a bit of the malt aroma. Taste is full of citrus hops well balanced with sweet, caramely malt. This is a really well done, well balanced IPA. Tons of hops with a strong malty backbone

Reviewed from notes on tap at The Blue Door Pub

A- Dark, cloudy, deep red. Head dissipated quickly.

S- Slight malt in the nose not overwhelming nose.

T- Rich, woody malt right on the forefront with plenty of hop to compete for attention.

M- Definitely could have been bigger I would call this a light medium bodied ale.

O- I would order this ale again. I found myself looking for more than what was there which may be because I like bigger ales. Probably not very helpful in this review but it is what it is. Cheers.

A: A beautiful, opaque, medium red color with a large 1 inch head that retained well throughout out. Nice lacing.

S: Smells of mainly citrusy hops but is well balanced.

T: More on the bitter side but has a nice malty taste.

M: Smooth. Very tasty!

O: Overall its a very nice Red Ale. I haven't found one that I don't like yet! Odells take on this style is very good. I would purchase this one again.

12 oz bottle poured into a pint glass.

A - Copper color leaning more towards the redish side.

S - The aromas on this one make this beer in my opinion. Strong fruity smells start (orange, some tropical like hints) followed by the hop grapefruit smell ending in a caramel like malty hint with a touch of spices. Some earthy wood tones. Smells like nature. AMAZING!

T - Taste is not what all of the smell would lead you to believe. Very balanced beer between the malts and hops however not as strong of a hop taste as the smell would lead to. Very tasty though. Alcohol is not noticeable whatsoever.

M - Medium body. Somewhat light on the carbonation.

O - If you see this get it! It is well worth a try. Very drinkable, amazing aromas.

Look: Somewhat cloudy, red-orange with a light khaki-colored head.

Smell: Hops and hints of citrus, malts, and pine.

Taste: Sort of bittersweet all throughout. It has the usual bitter aftertaste of an IPA, but with added hints of pleasant citrus.

Feel: Normal mouthfeel, dry aftertaste.

Overall: This is an excellent IPA!

Poured from a bottle dated 5.29.13 into a pint glass

Pours a very pretty ruby red with about a half inch foam head that stays throughout the duration of enjoying this one. Smells fantastic with a heavy dose of piny hops and some malty sweetness at the end. Tastes quite different than it smells, with the malty sweetness blending quite nicely with the hop presence.

Overall, this beer is one of my favorite offerings from Odell. As I sip on it, I am instantly transported back to my glorious days in Fort Collins as a CSU grad student... This was a beer that I always looked forward to every year, and I always had plenty on hand to share with guests at outdoor events and BBQs. Brings back memories of some of the best times of my life, and for that, I have to give this an obligatory two thumbs up.

S: FLoral and hopppy

M: Standard drinkable mouthfeel with some bones
O: Really good beer pick it up and drink it, more of an IPA than a malty red

Pours a nice dark copper color with a tan head. It's a pretty clean, clear beer in the glass, medium body. At first smell it's mostly citrus and hops that hit you. A nice, easy drinking beer. Caramel, grapefruit, and blood orange hints here. Finish is incredibly smooth, not too bitter. Very good seasonal release from Odell, a nice standout. Hopefully it taste the same next year!

The Odell's Red is, in my opinion, their best seasonal by a long shot. Sweet, malty, hoppy, creamy....overall a great product with very little fan fare.

The Red is a vibrant amber red with a lasting two finger head. It is as described above, a blend of goodness that could be 'ol trusty if it were around more often. Something I love to drink after a day of enjoying CO's many outside activities but with dreams of sipping on one at a hot summer Rox game. We all have dreams but at least today I have Red. Cheers.

2014 release six pack picked up, must be pretty fresh, date on bottle says 5/2/14, guessing this means drink it by then.. served around 35-40 degrees in the Dogfish/Sierra Nevada IPA glass.

A: Perfect, what an excellent red ale color this has, some decent carbonation, perfect red hint to it. poured with a finger of head that dissipates to a thin layer of head that completely covers the entire surface, which is awesome. lacing isn't huge but there are some long lacing legs up the glass.

S: Smell isn't what you want to judge this beer by, idk if it is just me but it smells almost like a rye IPA, it has a bread/red/rye smell that isn't the best smelling beer ever but either way it's not terrible.

T: Awesome, very fresh, has a big amber ale/red ale taste but you also get the punch of the fruity hops that Odell seems to have mastered. Very refreshing beer, and at 6.5% this is very session-able. I seem to be picking up a bit of bready taste as well as some rye. I don't even know if this beer is made with rye but there is a small bit of the rye characteristics with it.

M: Decently carbonated, feels light yet filling, I could drink a 6 pack in the summer on a hot day even though this is a Winter Seasonal. Very refreshing, great beer, would love to have on draft.

O: Pick this up if you see it, if you are lucky enough pick up their Winter'Spring Montage 12 pack that has this along with their latest Roots Release which for 2014 is a Pale Ale named "Wolf Picker" I believe.. if you can catch this beer on draft than of course give it a shot.

Summary: Best red IPA I have ever had, only one I can compare it to is the Elysian Valhalla Red, Odell is an excellent brewery and they seem to have mastered the fruity, juicy, fresh hops, their IPA is in my top 5 and their DIPA as well. What a great refreshing seasonal. Keep it up Odell!

Update: This beer gets better with every sip, find it and try it, it is amazing.

Drank both on tap and from my growler immediatly after the tapping party this evening at Odell.

Color is spot on to what a red should be- it's red. Really red. Smell is mostly forgettable, it's just too basic to be interesting. Mostly hops, some malt fighting through. Taste is better. A predominant caramel maltiness (you know, like a red) that ends in a citrusy and floral hop finish- very reminiscent of an IPA.

Picked a sixer of this up at Susan's Fine Wine and Spirits in Santa Fe. According to the beer guy there, the new red is similar to the old Extra Special Red, except less malt and more hop flavors.

A: Poured into a poor man's pint, was a nice deep golden-red color. Came out with a nice solid inch of very light head, which left consistent lacing throughout the drink.
S: Still a fair amount of malt, but you can definitely tell that this has more hops than the Extra Special Red. Almost has a little bit of a sweet, spicy scent to it. Maybe a hint of paprika almost.
T: Fantastic. Great up front malt. Throughout there was a pleasant citrus flavor going along with it, and it finished with a sweet and fairly strong hop flavor.
M: Incredibly full and refreshing. I really enjoyed the fullness of this one; after a full day out hiking, this was great to sit down to.
D: At 6.5%, this beer is just at the threshold of being too strong for a session beer. However, I will say that I've very comfortably killed my 6 pack in two nights, and I plan on going down and buying up a case while it's here. Highly recommended if you're a fan of reds.

L- chestnut-red with white head
S- hoppiness doesn't overpower as often happens in an IPA. Malt is detectable with a little sweetness provided by subtle dried fruit.
T- Hops with a pine-like flavor are definitely the main flavor profile but sweetness from strong honey notes is highly apparent and maltiness comes through. The aftertaste is a classic hop bitterness.
F-medium bodied with a nice carbonation-filled mouth feel.
O- A surprising flavor for an IPA. This beer decides not to overwhelm the palate with hops and go for a more balanced approach. making it more of an ale than an IPA.

Tangy! I totally get the grapefruit flavor everyone mentions on here. This is a very good red. The hops are all over the place, shaming many a so-called "ipa" My head didn't retain on this particular pour but it is leaving some nice lacing on the pint glass. The beer smells quite hoppy as well. A nice, easy drinking red that I will definitely come back to in the future.

Red IPA. not to be mean. But weak knees compared to Odell's regular IPA. this red seasonal is good, not phenomenal and rich like Odell IPA, or great with a kick Mercenary. Good beer. For the same price I can drink. Too light for my taste compared to Odell's other masterfull IPA, not citrusy bright, and refreshing such as Deschutes Fresh Squeezed IPA, or Stone's Delicious IPA. A beer not to turn down if offered it tastes good, but I will buy these others before I ever purchase this again.

Pours a lovely deep, clear red with a nice tan head. Aroma is of toast and citrus notes. Good hop presence. Slightly bitter then caramel malt notes dominate. Followed by good hop bitterness and floral notes. Finishes dry with just a hint of alcohol at the end. Very nice beer slightly thin mouthfeel otherwise excellent by all standards.

A: Pours a clear dark red amber with a thick 2 finger head, great retention and lacing.

S: Fresh and ripe red apple, pomegranite and asian pear combined with pungent floral and citrus hops, clean.

T: Excellent. Sweet crystal malt with a mellow caramel and red apple flavor which is completely taken over by hop flavors of pine, grass, mint and herbs. Good balance and as a reviewer said below, "While most hoppy reds really blur the line between red and IPA this is a quality balance between the more malty reds and the super hoppy reds." The aftertaste has a bold and agressive hop flavor that lingers for quite some time, you are sure to enjoy if youre a hop head

M: Medium bodied with perfect carbonation, an oily stickiness lingers on the palette after each sip but is not overwhelming.

D: Goes down pretty easily and at 6.5%, I could drink it happily through the night.

I must have received a very fresh batch of this stuff, because it was excellent. Also of note, this year's release is way better than the last few years if that turned you off. And if you aren't normally a huge fan of reds (like myself,) definitely give this one a try.

Another great beer from Odell!
