750ml bottle into a tulip courtesy of matttYCE. Not sure on the vintage.

A- Huge bomb of a cork. Pours a dark ruby/brown with a tan 3 finger rocky/ice cream head that leaves awesome lacing. Recedes and holds a one finger cap

S- Deep earthy brett funkiness, big bready notes, caramel, a bit of citrus fruit, and just a tinge of sour at the end. Pretty nice smelling.

T- Mostly caramel/vanilla/sweet malts with a bit of roast. There is a nice bit of funkiness to it along with just a bit of tartness...like generic lemonade-level. Finishes with some nice caramel and vanilla smoothness, a touch of roast, and just a bit of brett funk.

M- Medium-slick mouthfeel with pretty high carbonation that blasts the flavors off of your tongue pretty quickly...just how a "sour" should be.

O- This is a weird one for me. The smell is good regardless, but if I'm grading the beer as a wild it falls short in other categories. Grading it as a brown ale would have resulted in much higher scores.

750 ml corked & caged bottle
Served into a tulip glass

A: Dark brown body with a huge sudsy, foamy off-white head. The bottle conditioning evidence is obvious. Dissipation was slow leaving a thick head around for a while, along with patchy lacing on the walls. A bit overdone and annoying, but it is what it is.

S: Very bland and basic. Earthy malts from the Brown Ale base come through with very little toasting, some caramel, hints of faint bitter chocolate and a big funky brett overlay. Nothing tart or sour, just big funk.

T: Funky earthy-like brett qualities, caramel malts, young oak wood, and touches of toasted grains. There's really not too much going on here in terms of diversity. Yeah, it's a Brown Ale but the brett did nothing to really make this beer better. Having said that, I never had the base beer alone but in my opinion I just don't quite understand what they were trying to accomplish with the addition of the brett.

M: Highly carbonated, bubbly and a bit fizzy on the palate. Some dryness from the brett and barrel in the finish.

This was just okay. There wasn't anything that stood out in this beer. It tasted like a mediocre Brown Ale thrown a barrel with brett (which it was), but nothing more. Good to try? Sure. Nothing worth seeking out though.

Bottle obtained from local shop. Stored in cellar for about 2 months prior to consumption.

A - Very dark brown, nearly black color with a darker-tan head. Overly carbonated, on first pour, it filled the entire tulip with head - disappointing.

S - First thing on the senses is the spices, almost Belgian. Mild brett, smells of aged (oak?) wood and sweet and sour going on.

T - This beer was definitely interesting. Starts sweet with lots of flavor from the dark fruits, in the middle i tasted oak and spice, then it a tart finish via the brett. Not overly sour but a nice balance with the other flavors.

M - Medium body with WAY too much carbonation. My bottle was a bottle bomb. As soon as i took the cork out, it overflowed then on the first poor it was 99% head. Something went wrong here with this bottle....I've seen highly carbonated brews, this beat them all by a mile.

O - I have higher expectations for Odell. While i enjoyed the beer, it was let down by the mess it made all over my table, glass, and sink. The over-carbonation of this beer is an issue, or at least in my case it was. The flavors of the beer and the style of what they were going for with this brew, they did well - i commend them for that. I've had a lot of top-notch brews from Odell and i was expecting the same from this however i cant say i was thrilled with it. Beware the carbonation.

A - Pours a very dark brown, almost black color with massive four finger brown sugar looking head.

S - Mild brett, slight hop presence with a bit of spice characteristic. A bit of clove, banana, and sort of belgian spice. Very complex.

T - Starts out with some vanilla notes, mild bubblegum, tropical fruit such as pineapple and kiwi. Finish is mild pepper, earthy hops. The brett is barely noticeable to me.

M - Medium body with abundant carbonation.

O - Very easy drinking brown ale. This is an excellent beer for people wanting to experiment with sour beers. The brett presence is there but not overpowering or overwhelming in the least. Sourness of the brett is very faint. This does not make you pucker like I was figuring. Well done wild ale done by Odell.

Pours a dark brown with ruby highlights, slightly cloudy with a huge off-white head that lingers and laces.

Smell is of oak/wood with some tart cherry notes, vanilla, sweetness, and wild brett. It blends into a slightly stale and funky aroma.

Taste is up front brett/funk that goes into a slightly tart and astringent middle and ends on a sweeter pear, cherry, vanilla, oak note. The finish is nice enough, but the wild brett character rules over most of the taste. Reminds me of some infected homebrews I've had. Not bad but not really pleasing to my personal taste.

Medium to light body with medium to high carbonation and a warming alcohol body.

I find that I don't really enjoy the wild brett character, but everything else about the beer I do. A solid brew if you're into that particular medicinal brett character.

Got a bottle from Goebel's in Wichita.

Beer is a near-pure clear brown with orange highlights. Heavy, heavy lacing sticks all around the glass. Nice looking beer.

The nose is that of a yeasty brown ale, with hints of plum. very little hints of Brett in the subtle smell.

The taste is sweet with some roasted malt & dark fruity flavors, followed by the oak barrel, and finishing with the clean tart provided by the Brett. It's a 3-act play: Brown Ale, Oak, Brett. Higher points simply for its complexity.

Mouthfeel is nice & light, with considerable carbonation, but nothing special.

Overall, I'm liking this beer more and more as the bottle goes on, but hopefully that's not from the 10% ABV... Good, complex beer with a subtle use of Brett.

A quite deep mahogany. Against the light you can detect the deep ruby notes on the edges. Big, dirty-white head. Fat lacing and respectable retention. This head is sticking at a half-finger and going nowhere. Love the nose. Pungent, overripe fruit, wood, banana peel and the unmistakeable brett funk. Quite a bit of carbonation up front which dances on the tongue and peppers it with hits of funk and bready malt. That carries through the front 2/3rds and the back end flattens into a tangy, languid malaise. Truth be told, I like this beer a lot, but the back end nearly makes me question that decision.

Like It? It's good, but not great.

A - Pours an almost clear dark brown-red with a finger of tannish head. Head fades down at a normal pace with some good lace.

S - Aroma is full of sourness and sour cherry with some funky brett and some oak. Some other dark fruit as well.

T - Starts off with some sweet dark fruit and sour cherries. Through the middle, some more rich cherry flavor and funk come through with some funkiness and floral flavor. The finish is a mix of sour and tart cherries, oak, and funky brett.

M - Medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Smooth with a nice tart finish.

D - Very drinkable. Nice sour beer with some really nice sour cherry. Hides the booze well.

Odell Saboteur. Brett Barrel Brown Ale. Alc. by Vol. 10%. Odell Brewing Company, Fort Collins, CO. Let's skip the gobbledygook, and open 'er up.

Beautiful brown coloration, with crimson highlights, peeking at the bottom. Lush head of tan foam, lacy and lasting. Looks great.

Smellin' it: warm, funky, …and oddly bourbon-y. Does "brett barrel" mean a particular kind of barrel? It's very whiskey-ish. Let's peek at the geek speak. "American oak barrels." Could mean bourbon, doesn't explicitly state it. Has the vanilla and oak, some cherry. And alcohol.That covers it.

Tastin' it: Sour cherry and oak take the palate first. Starts strong, and mellows down. Begins sharp and strong, whiskey feeling still hangs in there, driving the character of the ale more than the brett affects it. Sour factor is light and unobtrusive, just enough a kick in there to keep it interesting. Alcohol kick continues, as well, but doesn't grow too noisy. Halfway into this bottle, I'm not too afraid of what'll happen to me when it's empty. Close, but not quite.

One thing's for certain, and that's that this is a long, luxuriant sipper of an ale. Mmmm, mellow, yet powerful. Sumptuous. Satisfying. (Though I'm sure many of sour head has complained about the "lack" of Brett.)

The latest release. Even after chilling the bottle this was an explosive pour. Tulip was filled with foam. It took a long while before the foam settled to a thick cap. Curtains of lace is left on the glass. The liquid is a dark brown once it forms. Annoying pour throughout the bottle.

I smell wood. Not oak neccessarily, but decaying wood. I also get some mint and herbal elements. Not what I was expecting.

About the only exciting thing about the flavor of this beer is the woody flavor. And that is not all that impressive. It is earthy, I'll give it that. Very herbal and medicinal.

Seems the carbonation lost all its pop in the foam during the pour. It does nothing to really improve the body. The body is moderate in heft.

Another disappointing beer from Odell in the large format. I think I am done spending good money on these beers as I do not think I have enjoyed a one.

Poured into a tulip glass from a 750ml bottle.

Pours a nice dark mahogany with some nice dark amber hints on the edges and some nice molasses darkness. A nice 1.5 inch head pops up with some nice dense bubbles. The head has a nice light cream colored.

Caramel malt sweetness can be perceived immediately as well as some nice woody notes. There is definitely some slight vanilla sweetness and some hints of tartness on the back end. Pretty nice caramel malt body is felt in the nose mixed in with some nice Brett funk notes.

Starts off with some nice caramel and molasses slightly sweet notes. Followed by some bready notes that are pretty nice and earthy. Nice grain profile. Then there is a subtle nice tartness and funk that comes up with some slightly fruity notes. TEh tartness dies down quickly and smooths out whole the funk and wood notes continue to cover the tongue and play out in my mouth. The finish is nice and dry and there is a nice faint vanilla hint that finishes the beer off. Pretty nice. There is a typical Belgian fluffy and foamy mouthfeel.

Pretty good offering and take on the Brown Ale style mixed with the Brett. It has some pretty good qualities of both styles.

Appearance: A beautiful pour, with a massive, creamy tan head sitting on top of the chocolate colored liquid; the retention and lacing are both impressive

Smell: Intriguing aromatics, more like a BSDA than what I was expecting; dark fruit (fig and date), pineapple, chocolate powder, vanilla and caramel, with just a vague hint of earthy funk

Taste: What was intriguing on the nose doesn't quite come together on the palate; the sweeter BSDA flavors are prominent with all of the fruit, chocolate and vanilla elements coming through but the Brett is very subtle and the earthy elements create a jammy character that lingers in the finish

Mouthfeel: Medium body with buoyant carbonation; the mouthfeel is out of the ballpark

Overall: I really wish I liked this beer more than I do; Odell is one of my favorite brewers and this concept has a lot of potential; I just found that the flavors were not as balanced and the dominance of the sweeter elements was not what I was seeking

Pours a deep murky brown with a huge light tan head that's pretty foamy. Good retention.

The strongest smell I get is sour cherries. Can definitely tell there is some maltiness to this and lots of brett.

Starts out with some oxidized caramel sweetness. The brett takes over and adds a sour note although just general sourness, not the cherries from the nose. Finishes slightly earthy and bitter with a touch of oak. Sourness is very minor.

Lots of carbonation. A little too much really with a medium mouthfeel.

Odell missed the mark on this one. The flavor profile completely clash and it ends up just tasting like the one time my homebrewed brown ale got infected. The sourness does not at all complement the base beer in this case. Slightly better as it warmed, but still really difficult to get through a glass.

750ml bottle - most recent batch

BOOM! Cork shot out like a rocket, scaring my dogs half to death.

a - I let it settle for a good five minutes but still ended up with a snifter that has four fingers of an off white to tan head. Low clarity with some hazy deep mahogany. Brilliant lacing.

s - Sour cherries, sweet bread, bits of floral, honey, sweet tarts.

t - Very interesting which is exactly what I was looking for. Light fruits that ride the malts - hardly sour. Slight alcohol is well incorporated.

m - To me, this is the highlight of the beer. Really quite amazing. Bubbly velvet froth without the over carbonation annoyance that usually accompanies that. Really pleasant to drink.

o - Innovative and delicious. Maybe put on some safety goggles before cracking it though.

UPDATE: Adding recent early 2012 review sampled March 23, 2012. Differences, huge carbonation difference. So much more here which helps to add to the "sour" style. Helps to dry the palate compared to the first vintage which must have lost carbonation over the 2 years in the bottle which is sometimes the case with cork and caged bottles. Flavor profile is similar but I believe fresh this version has slightly more of a punch; whether that is the alcohol or the "freshness" I cannot tell. Definitely prefer this version and I am glad I have a couple more to enjoy.

Pours a hazy deep dark amber, bordering brown with nice burnt sienna highlights. There is a small whispy off-white head that left a light coating on the sides of the glass and the head recedes.

The aromas begin fairly standard of a simple brown ale. Light cocoa, toasted grain, rustic brown bread crust and once you really start to dig for it, ample biscuit malt character and whole grain crackers. As it warms you get some sour fruits, oak, light leather and a bit of earthiness. I was expecting a lot more sour and tart aromas to be honest.

The tastes unfortunately follow the nose. Much more of a brown ale than I was expecting for a 2 year old soured brown ale. Malt influenced flavors of caramelized brown bread crust, touches of molasses, ample crystal malt, touches of toasted grain husks, really chewy dense whole grain bread and as the beer warms more lightly roasted malt character that can contribute significantly at times. As the beer warms up the otherwise very missed Brett character starts to contribute a funky quality to this brew; light barnyard musk is noticeable just underneath the malt. An ample fruitiness contributes notes of rich, though not sweet, raisins, earthy figs and dates. Once again not overly tart, and really delicious, just not what I was expecting.

The mouthfeel is medium bodied with subdued carbonation. The finish is mildly chewy and semi-sweet, lightly tart. As for the alcohol, yeah there isn't any. This being 10% is crazy as I could pound this if I wasn't enjoying the flavor so much.

Overall while I was disappointed but the lack of a solid sour backbone, I was still pleasantly surprised and pleased with the flavor profile of this beer. Drinkability is off the charts due to its light tartness and extremely balanced flavor profile. Fruits, both dark and tart, plenty of "brown" malt for sweetness and a light drying character from the oak aging. Really just a great tasting beer. Definitely recommended and worth a go for fans of Odell and/or this style. Don't expect a huge sour beer though; maybe the newer release is different though. Hopefully I will be able to sample and find out for myself.

Deep, dark mahogany body with a rich, creamy head. Thick, sticky foam rings cling to the pint glass. The scent is something strange - dark malts and fruits, with a phenol-like pungent mustiness. The taste is rich and creamy. Very bitter chocolate notes, grass and wood, with a strong alcohol warmth. Pleasing bitterness on the finish.

As a wild ale, I'm not sure how to rate this overall. My experience with wild ales is pretty limited, yet I'm intrigued with this one. Very complex components to this beer. Based on its ingredient mix and ABV, I'm inclined to think this one will age in a most interesting (and most likely enjoyable way). Worth checking out for the adventurous beer hound...

Duvel Tulip Glass...

A - HUGE straw colored foamy head. Very little spotty lacing remains on the glass. Brew is very deep ruby red, almost a night colored maroon.

S - Nice Brett characteristics. Very smooth malt and toffee scents. Awesome scent. No heat or off-putting scents. Sour scent is very minimal and well hidden. Great scented brown ale underneath the funk.

T/M - Smooth buttery flavor with nice deep roasty flavors. There nothing smoky or off-putting. Not very sour. Very well done brew. No heat or bitterness. Perfect carbonation too. There's an awesome base beer under the wild characteristics. Yum.

O - I'm anxious to see where this brew goes with a year or two on it... Awesome brew, very underrated. Nice job Odell.

Picked up a bottle of this on a recent trip to Arizona as I hadn't seen it locally (Colorado) in months. Price was great so I couldn't pass on it.

A - Poured from the undated 750ml bottle to a tulip. Beer pours a thick muddy dark red brown color with a huge 3 finger bubbly tan head with impressive retention and lacing.

S - An intriguing blend of mild chocolate, Brett, roasted malt, tropical fruit, oak, and vanilla. Very complex yet subtle and refined.

T - Perhaps one of the most complex beers I've had to date. Very similar to the nose in that the tang of the Brett and sweetness of the malt lay the ground work while the rush of complimenting flavors follow: smooth vanilla, oak, more of a semisweet chocolate, mild bitterness, cherry, pineapple. Really not what I was expecting. However each drink seems to increase the complexity of the beer. So much character yet everything works very well to compliment. Very good.

M - Medium bodied with light carbonation. Creamy and smooth and slightly dry on the finish. Hides the alcohol very well.

O - Overall, an impressive offering from Odell. I really enjoyed it. I will certainly keep my eyes open for any lingering bottles here locally and if not perhaps arrange for a trade to sample more. I really enjoyed it.

Had this one sitting around for about 2 years now -- thanks to my buddy Jeff for bringing this back from Colorado while visiting family. Review is from notes taken on 1/21/2012 and poured from the bottle to a tulip.

Appearance: Pour is a dark brown that is a little murky and looks like dark toasty malt; starts with a fluffy 2 finger light tan head with decent retention that never seems to totally disappear and remains at about 3/4 finger of a foamy cap; body is murky as mentioned, and nearly opaque; carbonation is strong and fast near the sides of the glass where I can actually see into the drink; multiple spots and a few big swaths of lacing cling to the sides of the glass.

Smell: Smell is fantastic -- sour and tart cherries and it's reminiscent of a dark red wine, perhaps even sherry; some sweet vanilla and oakiness balances out the tartness; bit of a funky Brett presence.

Taste: Holy crap. Fantastic. This may be the best wild ale I've had yet... Fantastic sweet and toasty caramel maltiness is a vivid and up front presence, and following it is the sour and tart cherries; bit of a funk and slightly leathery brett presence; flavors are solid and not especially overwhelming and I'm really surprised and pleased with the amount of caramel maltiness; I have to say that for being 10%, the alcohol is entirely masked.

Mouthfeel: Body is of medium weight and the carbonation is soft, yet still very present; a thick and very sticky coating is left all over the palate and it really holds the sweeter flavors of vanilla and caramel flavors long into the aftertaste; despite the tart sour nature, the caramel prevents any overwhelming pucker that some sours bring to the table; belly is left a little warm from the tartness and perhaps the alcohol.

Overall: Overall, this beer is great, and I think Odell needs to start making it year round and distributing it to wherever I happen to live. Great flavors and excellent balance, makes for a nice night cap and would likely be good any time of year. I can only regret only having the one bottle to enjoy.

Poured into a nonic pint glass at altitude in Denver. Thanks to blakelive784 for bringing this one along.

A: Pours a dark reddish caramel color with one of the biggest heads I’ve ever seen and an incredible amount of retention. Needless to say this leaves some pretty impressive lacing as well. Very appealing.

S: Brett yeast with some brown ale-like nutty notes and a bit of booze in the background.

T: Rich nutty notes up front give way to Brett yeast and some heat on the finish. Good flavors and well built, but not the most complex beer in the world.

M: Full-bodied and smooth with a slightly dry finish. Not bad, but could be a little more interesting to break the monotony.

D: There are some definite alcohol notes here that make this a little bit of a sipper. The Brett yeast flavors weren’t as complex and funky as I would have liked, and unfortunately those yeast notes were about the only flavors present It’s a good beer, but not groundbreaking. I would try some of Odell’s other bomber offerings if given the choice.

Appearance: Pours a light molasses color. Khaki head that is thick. It keeps bubbling up even after I stop pouring! Lots of sticky lacing in the glass.

Smell: Sour notes come through first. Lots of oak as well. Not as sour as I'd like. The base beer is lost behind the oak aging.

Taste: The oak dominates. Slight tart sourness is detectable. I hope this one develops into a much funkier beer. Once again, the base beer is all but lost in the taste as it was the nose. However, it comes through more in the taste and is rather nutty.

Mouthfeel: Silky smooth. Good amount of carbonation. The 10% ABV is not even detectable.

Overall: This is a beer I expected more out of. It isn't as funky as I'd like it to be. I was expected James Brown levels of funk and ended up having to settle for Guns N' Roses. Still good but not what I was looking for.

A corked and caged 750 mL bottle that I purchased today at the co-op; from the most recent release. Poured into a DFH signature glass.

Cork removes with practically no effort, and an extremely loud “pop” follows. I actually made towards the sink at this point, expecting a gusher, but luckily it all stayed in the bottle. A gentle pour produced a 50/50 mix of liquid and head in the snifter, roughly three finger’s width of each. Body is a dark, opaque brown that appears nearly black. Head is very fluffy and frothy, light tan/khaki in color. Generous lacing, and highly impressive retention; in fact, I haven’t taken a single sip of this that hasn’t had some foam on top.

Aroma is of tart fruits (date, plum, raisin, grape), hefty caramel, some toffee, and dark cocoa. Some faint yeast aroma is also present.

It tastes starkingly different, with the brown ale flavors dominating and any semblance of sour fruit amiss. Caramel, toffee, light cocoa, a hint of vanilla, some oak, and something reminiscent of lager yeast are all present in abundance. Only a very small amount of raisin, plum, and maybe date are present. It's not sour at all, and there is a noticeable alcohol presence on the finish.

Mouthfeel is a bit overcarbonated, but this actually helps lift the otherwise sticky base off of the tongue. The sugars linger a bit, giving a dry finish.

Overall, it's a gorgeous looking beer, but a bit of a let down after that. Not at all sour, making it just a brown ale in essence. It's very good for a brown ale, but I was expecting some form of enamel ripping goodness. The barrel is more subdued than anticipated. In sum, a good brown ale, not a sour ale. I'd say leaving it in the bottle for longer periods of time may help, but it was already overcarbonated, so perhaps it's best stored away from other fragile bottles/objects.

750 ml bottle served in nonic pint glass, reviewed from notes:

A - Pours a dark shade of amber brown, with five fingers of creamy, tan head. Retention is outstanding, and when the head finally recedes it leaves nice lacing on the glass. High marks for appearance, for what it's worth.

S - Funky, tart, sour bretts; caramel; indistinct nuts; subtle spice; and tart fruit. May be a bit imbalanced, but nice smelling all together.

T - Nutty caramel is balanced nicely by funky bacteria and sweet and tart fruit. It's got good flavors but it's a bit too simple. The ABV comes through on the finish, and it's a little obtrusive.

M - Medium bodied, crisp and smooth on the finish. Compliments the flavors that are there.

D - This one could probably benefit from some aging to bring more of the subtle flavors out. It's a good beer but not quite a great one.

this is dacadent, absolutely exquisite! pours almost black into a tulip glass. nice tall lacy white head. nose is really complex. malts roasted dark up front, brett in the back, with vanilla, fruit, and woody notes interplaying in the middle. flavor is very different from any brown ale on the planet. a little smokey with tons of acidic fruit going on, tart but not sour brett finish. this beer constantly evolves in the mouth, and as it warms it gets even better, with notes of cocoa and a stronger alcohol burn coming to life. mouthfeel is good too, a little thicker than i am used to for a brown, but it works here. i continue to be blown away by almost everything odell's does, all of their cork and cage releases are out of this world, and all their regular bottles are some of my staple beers. this one tops the charts for me! worth all of the $13.29 i paid for it!

750ml brown glass bottle with hood and wire cap over a cork served into a Fort Collins Brewing pilsner glass in high altitude Castle Rock, Colorado.

A: Pours a six finger head of white colour, decent cream, good thickness, and amazing retention for the 10% abv (probably six minutes). Colour is an incredibly dark caramel amber.

Sm: Brett yeast/funk. That's it! A mild strength aroma.

T: A bit simple, with muted bretts. Structurally brief. Some lingering grape continues after the finish. Not a whole lot is going on here. Nicely nutty. It's pleasant and enjoyable for what it is, but needs more to be truly great. Pleasant yeast. I do like what's there. It's balanced, but there aren't too many notes to balance.

Mf: Smooth and wet. Suits the flavour well.

Dr: Highly drinkable for the ABV. Conceals the alcohol extraordinarily well.
