A Golden Ale created by blending the final recipe with its own barrel aged pilot beers fermented with wild yeasts. Each individual barrel contributes a unique flavor from the wood chosen and the cultures resident to achieve subtle complexities that develop(ed) over time. A beer which starts sweet, filling the mouth with fruit-like esters and a mild spiciness, changing to a tart and lingering flavor reminiscent of grapefruit living amidst an earthy, citrusy hop aroma. Define flavor for yourself in this constantly evolving liquid expression.

750 ml bottle into tulip glass, 2012 vintage. Big gusher, but I caught it in time. The foam is climbing in the bottle. Pours moderately hazy/cloudy deep golden/orange/amber color with a 3 finger fairly foamy and fluffy off white head with great retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Nice spotty foamy lacing clings on the glass, with a moderate amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of big tart/tangy lemon, lime, orange, grapefruit, citrus peel/zest, peach, plum, pear, apricot, red/green apple, white grape/wine, oak, peppercorn, hay, straw, grass, wet wood, leathery/musty/lacto funk, honey, candi sugar, white bread, and biscuit; with light notes of caramel, toast, white wine vinegar, and yeast/oak earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of fruity/funky/acidic/spicy yeast, wine barrels, and dark/bready malt notes; with big strength. Taste of big tart/tangy lemon, lime, orange, grapefruit, citrus peel/zest, peach, plum, pear, apricot, red/green apple, white grape/wine, oak, peppercorn, hay, straw, grass, wet wood, leathery/musty/lacto funk, honey, candi sugar, white bread, and biscuit; with light notes of caramel, toast, white wine vinegar, and yeast/oak earthiness. Light-moderate lactic tartness, wine tang, and Brett/oak tannin spiciness on the finish. Lingering notes of tart/tangy lemon, lime, orange, grapefruit, citrus peel/zest, peach, plum, pear, apricot, red/green apple, white grape/wine, oak, peppercorn, hay, straw, grass, wet wood, leathery/musty/lacto funk, honey, candi sugar, white bread, biscuit, light caramel/toast/vinegar, and yeast/oak earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Awesome complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/funky/acidic/spicy yeast, wine barrels, and dark/bready malt flavors; with an awesome malt/tart/tangy, and yeast/oak spiciness balance; with no puckering/astringent flavors after the finish. Moderately crisp/clean finishing. Moderate increasing dryness from lingering tart, tangy, spiciness, and carbonation. High carbonation and medium body; with a very smooth and moderately bready/grainy/acidic/tangy/tannic balanced mouthfeel that is great. Mild increasing warmth of 10.5% after the finish. Overall this is an awesome wine barrel aged blended wild ale. All around awesome complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/funky/acidic/spicy yeast, wine barrels, and dark/bready malt flavors; very smooth, crisp, clean, and dangerously easy to drink for the big ABV, with the moderately bitter/spicy/tangy/tannic/drying finish; not overly lactic/tannic. Awesomely well rounded Brett/Bacteria complexity and wine barrel presence for 42% of the blend; with a great clean pale/wheat malt backbone against acidity. Minimal residual sweetness with crisp drying. Insanely well attenuated for the ABV. A really enjoyable offering, and outstanding style example for the ABV. Aged extremely well.

Like a partially soured barleywine, aged in oak and picking up the bitter whisky spice, Odell's evolution of a beer is much more of a work in progress than any finished product.
As it stands, their DeConstrction Golden Ale pours with a dirty, burnt orange color with amber margins. With little foam to show, the seemingly mulled ale entices the nose with a host of sweet maltiness, stone fruit, spicy notes with an oaken sour twang that keeps the olfactory senses guessing with each pass of the nose. The sweetness captures a taste of candied oranges with caramel, maple, brown sugar and sorghum with an early introduction on the tongue.
Fruit flavors open up on the sweet foundation of malt wit their own dried and concentrated flavors of oranges, cherries, dates, grapes and figs. The alcohol spice of whisky follows with an unapologetic spicy heat and a piquant bitterness of grapefruit and lime peels. Moderate sourness of apple, white wine and mild acetic tones seem slightly vinegar-like to go along with the vinous acidity.
Full bodied but not as rich as barleywine, the beer uses its sourness for balance and lightness that, when considered the esters and malt character, begins to take on a British strong ale character. A long aftertaste of sourness, alcohol and lingering sweetness never allows the ale to establish a hierarchy in taste. Though a solid beer, when everything stands out then nothing stands out.

Drank this years ago; from my notes:
Light orange color; very murky.
HUGE head; bountiful lacing. Careful pouring this!
Nose is of white wine. Taste is of apple juice & white wine, with notes of oak. For all that, this is pretty easy to drink and better than expected. An enjoyable diversion.

L: Pours hazy amber under a 3” frothy cream colored persistent and clingy foam collar.
S: Fruit, vinegar, wine sour aromas, citrusy hops, traces of Brett.
T: Fruit in the peach to apricot range backed by earthy hops, alcoholic, with a background of biscuit and a moderate bitter tonic finish.
F: Creamy, medium full body, very fine, soft carbonation.
O: A very nicely done American Wild Ale.
