S: Roasted malts, sweet, and hoppiness,

T: Roasted, slight smokey/malty and hoppy.

M: Bitter and robust; hoppy, dark, and malty.

O: Great beer. Classic Colorado brew! A legend!!

750ml bottle. Wow are Odell corks tight! Pours dark brown/black with a monstrous creamy light brown head that retains well and laces the glass.

The aroma is roasted malts, some black licorice, and resiny piney tarry hops.

The flavor is roasted malts with a little sweetness and a good amount of fruity, medium bitter, hops in the finish. The mouthfeel is medium to full bodied with smooth carbonation.

Overall, a very solid, well balanced, brew. Nothing over the top, but very drinkable. The alcohol is well hidden but the warming sneaks up on you.

12oz brown bottle with a freshness date.

LOOK: A shade away form full on black, epic looking lacing on the glass.

SMELL: Peppermint, orange zest, carob, sweet coffee, plum pudding, figs, dark bread, alcohol.

TASTE: Smooth, creamy, medium body, full jacket of hop flavor, thick wild herb, mint, pine, orange and lime zest, warming alcohol, slight roasted grain, burnt sugar, toastet bread crust.

Odell is serious when the said "Double", the hops are amped with a level of alcohol is tells you that you better be sipping and of course the malt to back everything up is just enough. I really love where Odell is taking this style.

Pours a dark brown with a tan head. Hard to compete against Wookie Jack in this category but this beer does a wonderful job. The beer has a liquorice flavor with some bitterness on the end.

The beer pours a very dark brown color with a huge tan head. The aroma has a lot of pine and resin notes, with some darker malt thrown in. The flavor is very similar, with the strong pine and resin notes from the hops really coming through strong. There is also some chocolate and lightly roasted malt, as well as some cream and a low amount of bitterness. There is also a slight medicinal flavor, but I can't pick out what it is caused by. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation.

Serving glass: Poured from bottle into Nonic Imperial Pint.

Appearance: Very dark brownish-black with massive light brown head and nice lacing.

Smell: Pine, grapefruit, coffee, dark chocolate and a floral rose-like aroma.

Taste: Great juxtaposition of pine & grapefruit accented hops and coffee & bittersweet chocolate roasted malts. Ends somewhat bitter, spicy and floral; just generally very well balanced.

Feel: Smooth medium to full body with moderate carbonation. Very dry finish.

Drinkability: Delicious - great melding of Porter and IPA, imperialized. Would love to have this again - I split the 750 and was jealous of the other 375.

I am still trying to get over the oxymoron of a black IPA but here goes: Grassy hops, light roast, hints of chocolate very faint spice suggesting anise on the nose. Pours brilliant black to dark brown under a 3” tan cap. It is very creamy with an underlying sweetness with light roast – but no burnt flavors, dark sugars suggestive of light chocolate, faint fruit and spice on the palate. Less hop bitterness than expected. Medium body and a little more than medium on the carbonation. Not as hot or warming as your would expect for 9.5% abv. Very drinkable.

Poured from 12 oz. bottle into a Surly Darkness Chalice glass. Bottle best by date is 4/12/12.

Appearance: Pours dark and black with only a little bit of brownish ruby red shining through the bottom of the glass. Moderate amount of bubbles and a decent two fingers of off white head that stick around pretty good. Lots of lace on the glass.

Smell: Very roasty and hoppy. Big aroma of dark roasted malts with good hints of chocolate and a little coffee. A fairly strong hop presence with lots of earthy hops, pine resin, and some citrus grapefruit and pineapple. Nice mixture of fruity and floral hops with the malt.

Taste: Taste is very hoppy upfront with a nice blend of citrus and earthy hops. Notes of grapefruit, pineapple, orange, and pine resin. Midway comes a very hearty backing of bready dark roasted malts. Nice notes of chocolate with a little coffee in the back end. Some spice hangs on to the tongue. Very good.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with a moderate level of carbonation. Creamy and somewhat oily. Alcohol is barely noticeable. Finishes pretty dry.

Overall: A very good take on a Black Ale. Very big and robust flavors but well balanced.

Dark dark brown pour, slight tan head to it. Amazing fruity aroma. Beer looks so dark, but smells so tropical.

Big tropical hop flavor, pineapple and mango in a double black ipa, love it. Perfect carbonation for the appearance and the mouthfeel, something I've had an issue with from these guys before, but not here. Don't really want to call it complex because its really just a big hop mouthfeel of tropical citrus with a black appearance. I don't taste any of the chocolate, coffee or cream that others do, I think there might just be a projection of color =flavor bias.

Close your eyes and drink it, very drinkable, hides the alcohol extremely well. Got this from koufax21 for xmas, a great gift indeed.

Appearance is a dark brown in a red-orange hue. Nice 2 finger frothy head. The aroma gives off the smokyness hinting at the hoppiness to come. The smoky flavor is a little overpowering which is expected from a black ipa. Wish it was a little more subtle. Taste also hangs out a bit in the back of your pallet. A good beer nonetheless.
