Leaving a review here for the normal "Mountain Standard Time Black IPA" instead of on the other listing which is technically a double IPA. This beer is only 8.1%, not 9.5%. Very surprised a brewery as big as Oddell hasn't surpassed 10 reviews on any beer they make or have made.

Cool artwork on the beer, King Crimson esque "Larks Tongues in Aspic" like.. (I had to).

The obvious distinction between the two closely related beers I've mentioned comes out already even though I haven't tried the double version. The smell is quite faint with just the slightest bit of roasted malts and some indistinct hops.

Look (besides the generous lasting had and beautiful lacing) is a dark brown, almost black IPA. Haha.

Taste is hop dominant but alludes to a porter. That is likely the malts doing their business, swept under the rug by a relatively bitter, piney/sour tone that mixes in strangely well with the roasted, salty cracker malts. Don't be fooled as this is still an IPA trying to look like a stout etc. Cheers!

I like it and look forward to giving the double IPA a shot, maybe more alcohol and malts is what this thing needs.

The reboot with a lowered abv is excellent. Nicely hopped with solid roastiness that fits the style perfectly.

Aroma is pine/pine needles, spices and dark malts. The flavor is dark malts, chocolate, pine needles, grapefruit and an acidic/bitter/slightly sour finish.

Poured into a tulip

Appearance: very dark brown; definitely not black but close. The head is a solid 2-finger tan head that lasts indefinitely as you’d expect from an IPA / 2X IPA.

Aroma: the alcohol really comes through in the nose. Hops are present but very little dark malt.

Flavor: roasty, increasingly so as the beer warms. Nice and hoppy to balance the flavors. The hops are definitely of northwest variety – spicy with pine. Pine is key. Perfect hops. There is some alcohol in the finish.

Mouthfeel: light-medium. A few of these beers could go down a wee tad too easily.

Overall: this is certainly an enjoyable beer and well done, but Odell’s Myrcenary is better. A good beer nonetheless, and kudos to Odell for trying a black double IPA. Well done.

L: dark, ruby at the bottom, light tan foam with a touch of lacing. Head quick to settle
S: like an IPA. Lots of hops. Touch of sweet malt comes through
T: a malty IPA. Nice!
F: thicker than expected. A nice surprise
O: my first double black IPA. Reminded me of a hoppy porter. I liked it

Named after the time zone in which Colorado falls under, Mountain Standard is a Double India Dark Ale, or if you prefer, a hoppy Imperial Stou, hoppy dark beer, whatever. It should be good to go. On to the beer:

It certainly looks black in color with the lightly tanned head, which retains itself quite well and has a somewhat creamy texture. The hops seem to have faded, creating more of a bittersweet beer with notes of prunes, pine, resin, and pears.

Mountain Standard seems to have aged pretty well. You still have a kick of hops that provide gentle pine and resin. Despite its strength, Mountain Standard doesn't show its high octane alcohol. I got a note of bittersweet malt and vague mixed fruits, which I suspect is coming from the yeast. The beer should be respected as the liquid goes down, and that mouth feel is full-bodied.

It aged fine, which makes me more curious to find a fresh sample in future.

Dark pour, mostly black, beige head reppin' that 3/4" depth. Aroma was very nice, 1st tier tropical and citrus dominate way more than roast like less good black ipas.

Taste keeps hitting those tropical waves, catch a wave brah. Pineapple and mango stuff. Carbonation spot on. This one actually tastes like ipa more than it does porter. For once.

This could be the best black ipa around. Not bitter, hides alcohol, not roasty, is fruity.

Das it man.

Poured from a bottle, bottled 2/4/16. Pours a dark brown with a big, creamy light tan head. Against light, the color looks like a deep red. Aromas of floral hops are prevalent, with some bready malt notes, and roasty chocolate. Flavors start piney with some bitterness, but heavy malt flavors take over with roasty breadiness with some chocolate. Less ashy and harsh than most black IPAs. Tends toward the malty side, but well balanced with some hops and bitterness, but not too much. Feel is medium/heavy and very creamy. The ABV is well hidden in this beer. Overall, a delicious winter beer that is very smooth with flavors that blend very nicely together.

Picked up a 6er in NE, brought home to IN. One of my first black IPAs. Pretty darn good overall. I got some carmelized hoppy toned down roasted pinecone. Or at least that was the mental image forming in my mind as I enjoyed it. Wish Odell was more readily available in my neck of the woods.
