Style: Scottish Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 5.30%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
We introduced 90 Shilling, our flagship beer, at our opening party in 1989. For a while, we'd been wondering what would happen if we lightened up the traditional Scottish ale? The result is an irresistibly smooth and delicious medium-bodied amber ale.

I purchased a six pack of this beer in 12 oz. cans from France 44 in Minneapolis, MN. It has a best by date of 05/11/2018 which is probably the reason they were selling this for a discounted price.

90 Shilling pours a medium amber hue with a 1 inch head that leaves a nice lacing.

The aroma is crisp with hints of caramel and an earthiness.

The flavor is very crisp as well. The caramel does come out as does the earthy qualities but there also seems to be some spice coming out from the hops. There are some nice complexities present but it is still an easy drinker.

Overall I think this is a very good beer in both the Scottish and Amber ale styles.

Pours a crystal clear deep amber/pale brown with a steady but low level effervescence streaming up from the bottom. The pour produces a solid 3 fingers of foamy, khaki, somewhat lasting head that leaves rings & streaks of lacing. Aroma is biscuit, dark malt & roasted nuts, earthy with hints of caramel & thin but bitter chocolate.Taste is dark malt, biscuit, roasted nuts, caramel & earthy floral hops with hints of smoke, cocoa & dark fruit. Dark bready malt, caramel, smoke & a little spice dominate the finish. Low bitterness throughout even in the burnt, unsweetened chocolate & caramel aftertaste. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with moderate carbonation, a little thin but not overly so, slightly creamy with a light prickliness.

Pours with a dark copper color and a slow fading, off-white head. There is a subtle sweet aroma which matches this brews simi-sweet flavor. What I like the most are its spiced, reminds me of cloves, and smooth cream notes. There is a touch of sourness that coates the tongue. Overall, a fine brew with medium carbination and body. Not sure how it stacks up agains other Scottish ales, but really a tasty beer.
