Very Good
Rich Man'sRich Man's
Notes: We love keeping a diverse lineup at Monkey Paw and Rich Mans proves this. Not your typical San Diego IIPA, this beer exhibits a more “classic” hop profile inspired by our industry’s forefathers. A bold copper-colored beer with beautiful gold edges, and crowned with a strong white head. The aroma is piney and dank. The mouthfeel is smooth and solid. The flavors of pine, grapefruit rind and dankness combine with a pleasant malt sweetness that interplays to mask the alcohol.

Thanks!

Amber colored with slight haze. A finger of head forms from a vigorous pour, retaining well. Smells of bready malts and caramel, with a bit of orange oil behind. Hints of tropical fruit. Entirely too malty for the style but not unpleasant. Palate is similar; very malty and bready with a touch of caramel. The hop profile is largely citrusy, orange up front with a bit of pineapple beneath. Mouthfeel is heavy and sweetness lingers throughout. Bitterness is mild. A decent but unexceptional beer, especially coming from San Diego.

A-Burnt orange....perfect small cream head...

S-Not real assertive here....fresh citrus...oranges...some mild tropical fruits as well (pineapple, mango)

T-Rich flavor and texture....first impression is a malty sugary sweetness and then fresh citrus on the finish....the more I drink the more of a piney hop flavor emerges...not real bitter but it become more drying on the long finish.

M-Pretty substantial. Seems big in body and weightiness.

O-This is solid...something about it seems a little muddled though...a little too sweet with not enough of a bright hop presence. A decent beer but I wouldn't buy it again in San Diego with so many other options available for a one-time trip. If I lived in San Diego I'd give this place a few more shots.(scores reflect this against beers in this class of which there are many greats out there).

Scarlet red body. Thick ivory white head with great retention and lacing. Pretty thick aroma. Solid caramelized malt aroma with canabis and pine the main hop contributors. Pretty interesting flavor and very interesting mouthfeel. This beer feels almost like it's coming out of a cask. Low carbonation, but nowhere near being flat. Very easy drinking. Flavorful beer too. Pretty malt forward DIPA which is a bit curious coming from San Diego, but it's a very good beer. Caramel malt center with pine and resinous hop qualities contributing. Solid beer. Thanks to brah ZAP for hauling this one back for me.

16oz can received this in a great trade with cocoapuph... Thanks Jeremy!! Poured into my slip tulip long lasting white head... nice lacing.. the brew is fairly clear amber.

The nose is plenty malty... a touch to much IMHO... still clean citrus hops with some background cut grass helps cut through the malt...

Fairly bitter right up front balances a fairly thick for the style maltiness.. toast and caramel ... again a pronounced citrus hop punch moves up midpalate... finish is a little short and dies off pretty quickly...

Body seems a bit heavy... carbonation is spot on.... Drinkability is good, but a drier brew would help that for me.

Thanks again Jeremy for the awesome trade!!

On tap at URGE for the Monkey Paw North County Launch Party.

A: Dark reddish orange with good clarity. One finger of white foam. Good retention and much lacing.

S: Caramel and bready malt with restrained orange and grapefruit. I detect a little tangerine. Pine is pronounced throughout.

T: Piney and herbal with some grassy notes. Malt foundation is of caramel and bread. Alcohol is well hidden. Bitterness is smooth and at a moderate level. Orange and grapefruit are restrained. Bitterness waxes in the finish.

M: Medium body with upper medium carbonation. Mouthfeel is dry and sticky.

Overall: An okay Double IPA. Malty and somewhat inexpressive.

Pours a hazy orange-ish to amber color with a light tan head. In the aroma, pineapple citrus hops with a nice mellow malt. In the taste, dry pine and orange citrus hops stand out, a dryer malt and citrus rinds in the end. A mellow bite and a medium bodied mouthfeel, with a dry grassy, orange citrus rind like aftertaste. Big citrus and mellow pine, quite nice.

16oz can courtesy of HH84. Thanks!

A: Dark orange with a pleasant 1" head. As I drink this down, the head retention is quite good, but the beer doesn't quite stick to the side of my glass.

N: Biscuit and pineapple with the latter being predominant. At a sniff, this is some citrusy hops on top of a sweet, sugary base.

T: Almost a barleywine at first sip. Mango/pineapple with the prerequisite pine. Definitely some peppery spiciness which expands as the beer warms. Could pair this with some thai peppers, but I have to take some points off because it's also getting some of the burn from an alcohol sharpness.

M: Drying and well-balanced. Not a fan of palate-scraping DIPAs so this one's alright by me.

O: If I were in the SD area, I'd want to try this again, because with some tweaking, I think it'd fit right into my comfort zone. Citrusy hops on top of a hearty malt base. As it stands now, there's room for improvement, though.

Pours a hazy amber color with a fluffy off-white head. Strong citric character with lots of grapefruit, tangerine, and lemon peel. There is a nice touch of pine and some sweet toffee malt. A bit of floral hops in there, too. The flavor is a good blend of sweetness and bitterness. Plenty of pine and grapefruit peel with a very strong citric hop profile and flavor. The bitterness is mostly present on the finish.

A darker, caramel-colored hazy DIPA. Somewhat sticky retention and lacing.

Sweet and hoppy combination: citrus and a bit of lemon. Some pine and sweet caramel.

Flavor is similar with a hint of alcohol presence. Floral, citrus, and pine hops combine with sweet, bready malt.

Medium bodied with lower-moderate carbonation.

Decent, but not a great San Diego DIPA.

Thanks!

A - Pours burnt orange/copper in color, off-white head, spotty lace.

S - Lots of malts and hops...more malts then I was expecting. Hoppy notes of resin, mango, and citrus. Malty notes of caramel, and light toasted bread.

T - More hops then malts on the palate, which doesn't surprise me. Mango, resin, and citrus are up front and followed by light toasted malts. Alcohol is pretty easy to pick out and it a bit hot. Finish is oily mix of resin and sweet fruit.

M - Medium body, good carbonation, oily finish.

O - Not a bad DIPA, but a little "too much" for me. I don't mind the mix of hops and malts, but the alcohol is pretty agressive and in-your-face to enjoy more then part of a can by myself. That said, I'd have it again but would rather drink the Brown Ale or APA.

Very attractive in the glass with a nice head and long-lasting suds on the tongue. The darker amber shade with the typical orange case. Fairly rich and quite malty. A very pleasant fruity and flowery aroma of the big-hop sort.

Certainly the fruity sort of IPA. Besides the inevitable grapefruit peel, there is some mango and a hint of pineapple-orange juice. After the sweet malt honeymoon, the bitterness continues its trajectory. Every sip is the same-- a promising start with a regretful finish. I think this is getting towards undrinkable, even though it's interesting for a few sips. The beer seems well made, so if you like the abusive hops, it is worth a try.

From the tall can purchased at Best Damn in San Diego.

It's dark in here in Small Bar in central San Diego, so appearance appraisal may not be entirely accurate. Seems a hazed golden orange with a short antique white head. The bouquet is comprised of grapefruit and soured milk (but not in a bad way, if you can imagine). The mouthfeel is a little thin. There are some interesting esters in the flavor making it unique. Grapefruit, perhaps something a little greener too. A grape? Not my favorite.

A: Pours a slightly hazy copper color with a thin cream colored head.

S: Orange hop notes with some bready malts and caramel evident.

T: A nice, spicy hop bite throughout. Some pine and a lot of caramel and sweet orange malt flavor. A touch of pepper on the finish. A bit heavy on the mouthfeel but otherwise good.

I had this beer at Monkey Paw during a recent trip to San Diego. Beer has a nice copper color with an appropriate head. Aroma is floral but a little subdued. A very pronounced hop bitterness, I wish they would have used some of the bittering hops for later additions. Not a bad IIPA, but there are better ones out there.
