On-tap at Beachwood Brewing

Dark brown in color with a creamy, dense khaki head. A moderate hoppiness to the nose with strong roasted malt and coffee aromas. A hint of licorice and dark chocolate, maybe some molasses. The hop character is a bit herbal and piney. Quite a bit of roasted malt and coffee notes on the palate with a moderate bitterness. Herbal and pine hop flavors, a bit of citrus peel, and cocoa. Nice mouthfeel, too.

On tap at Stone. Described as a Black Lager.

A: Brown bordering on black with a pillowy beige head.

S: Earthy notes with rich dark chocolate, licorice, and a prominent roasted malt presence. Hop profile is a pleasant blend of pine, orange, and grapefruit. Perfume-like floral notes are evident. There's a dash of caramel in there as well. Excellent.

T: Rich dark chocolate blends with licorice and roasted grains. Smooth moderate bitterness with a firm pine presence and strong citrus characteristics that remind me of orange. Coffee is well integrated throughout. Dry smooth cocoa roasted coffee citrus finish.

M: Medium body with upper moderate carbonation. The mouthfeel is dry, smooth, and sticky.

Overall: A Black Lager that's a lot like a hoppy Stout but clean. It's pretty damn good. This took me by surprise.

On tap at Beachwood BBQ & Brewing in Long Beach, CA.

Pours a clear dark brown with a foamy khaki head that settles to a film on top of the beer. Foamy streaks of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of roasty malt, caramel, and some herbal hop aromas. Taste is much the same with a mild amount of roasty bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer but it smells better than it tastes in my opinion.
