Pours murky, pale yellow in color with 1/3 inch head. Taste is lemon juice, big sour mix, and slight dank hops that appear on the finish as the beer warms. Mouth-puckingly sour, high carbonation, and light bodied. Some IPA characteristics, but a lot of sour. This is an exceptional Berliner-weiss. Best from Burley Oak yet. I would get this often if it were more readily available here.

Like apple juice, little to no head
Nose is funk, some lemon
I like this beer. A lot.
Tart up front, easy going down. Some lemony barnyard.
Nice beer. Always enjoy this one.

Burley Oak Brewery "Sorry Chicky Dry-Hopped Sour Ale"
12 oz. can, no freshness dating
$2.99 @ Atlantic Liquors, Rehoboth Beach, DE

First off- WHOAH! - this is one sour ale. It's intense. I have no idea what the pH is because I don't have a meter with me, but it seems more sour than most. Moving forward, I thought when I initially checked the can for a date that it didn't even matter, surely nothing can "sour" a sour ale, right!? But there are also hops at play here, so let's see... I find some minty, leafy, subtly fruity, and even slightly grassy hop notes in the aroma, and a little bit of that in the flavor, mainly at the end once the tartness starts to die down. I wouldn't call it a hoppy beer though, and thus I wonder, "how old is this sample?" On the other hand, can you even get hoppy oils into a sour beer? Chemically, how much can you attach?

The sourness is clean, but to a certain extent, vapid. There's really no funk to it, just acidity. It reminds me of unripe white grapes. I keep wanting more, and that makes me feel like it's missing something, regardless of how small it might be. Maybe just a little more carbonic bite might bring it alive... ? Or not.

The question is how to judge it. Fortunately it's not labeled with a style. It might be listed on Beer Advocate as a "Berliner Weissbier", but there's nothing like that on the label, so I think it's only fair then that I judge it hedonistically with a little bit of style in mind - meaning that it's a sour beer, I'm going to judge it as I see it, as a sour beer, but not necessarily against any specific guidelines.

So, #1 I'm disappointed that it's not even a little bit funky. This must have had a culture pitched. I understand that that's easier, but it's kind of boring. On the other hand...

#2, they did dry-hop it, and maybe I've just got an old sample. And I was inspired by that. I thought if I don't have a good sample then I'll just have to go and visit these guys; so I looked up the brewery, and dammit if I wasn't just near there! Had I known that I'd have driven an extra half hour or so to visit the brewery and tried all of their beers.

Conclusion: Intense but lacking depth; a one-trick pony. I give it points for being so clean out of one side of my mouth, and then I turn around and take them away because it lacks funkiness out of the other! If you're a fan of sour beers I'd say you have to try it. Seek it out so that you can determine for yourself.

Big time lemon and some slight musty funk. Crisp, puckering finish. A whole range of vibrant citrus flavors play over a backdrop of wheat and cereal grains. Really nice.
