Poured from a capped 750 mL bottle into a small goblet. Moderate hand. Dated 2013.

A: Hazy, iced tea-brown body with 1 finger of off-white head. Good retention. Light lacing.

S: Sweet malt with notes of brown sugar and molasses. Touch of chocolate. Slight dark fruit, dates. Orange-forward hop notes.

T: Maltiness opens with a light rye-type spiciness. The hops gradually build to a relatively dry, moderately hopped finish. The flavors are quantitatively light for a barley wine, as is the alcohol presence.

M: Moderate carbonation with a light to medium body. Certainly less substantial than average for the style, but relatively easy drinking.

O: I’d say “sessionable barley wine” is a fairly accurate description. Potency of flavor and complexity are lowered, but accompanied by equitable gains in drinkability. Enjoyable, overall.

Prost!

Poured from the can into a nonic pint glass. Barleywine? Or Imperial Red Ale?

Deep ruby, nearly brown like body, sort of an Indian like red color. Solid as a rock. With partly a touch of clarity up to the heads crown. Khaki to light tan head. Manage two fingers slowly, but with a half finger retention as it settles. Deep, dark, and aggressive, if strangely large.

Aroma is pretty wild. Deep dark liquored cherry fruit aromas. Slight hints of brown sugar, with a nice dusting black forest cake like slight aroma. Thick malt but without rushing caramel sweetness. A bit of toffee squeaks in. Senses large brew on the nose, but without the heat.

Palate gets more into richness, but with nice mouthfeel. Bold coating and filled with malt rich flavors. Soft bodied but with a big density more towards Imperial red, and small hop thickness of oils and soft cedar. Excellent fruit berry tones, more towards cherry and raspberry in the mid palate, almost like a clotted rich cream flavor. Aftertaste hits at a bit of herbal tea softness, and muted tangy caramel.

A sessionable barleywine indeed. Let's just call it Red Richness and just be done with it! Delicious too!

Had from 16oz can. So its labeled as a sessionable Barleywine on the can and that is a pretty good description. Not sure why its called an Amber/Red Ale on here at all. Perhaps even coming across as a Scotch Ale with the caramel and sweet notes. Not hoppy or bitter at all and not overly sweet. Drinking 16oz of it was no challenge at all and it went down well. A pleasant "sessionable" big beer.
